Midi clock problems

OK it seems like midi clock sync and also the ability to send midi start/stop should be a feature in any app that features midi. I recent bought midiflow (amazing app), unfortunately so many apps midi clock seems broken. With the exception of ielectribe i haven't been able to make any of these apps sync up OR start/stop externally.

Nanostudio (it doesn't even have midi clock, shame too it's my favorite synth daw)
Magellan Jr
SunrizerXS
Dm1
Addictive micro synth by VirSyn

What the heck is going on? Do these developers just not bother or am I doing something wrong because it seems pretty straight forward. Is there a workaround maybe? Apps or useless if you can't sync them. You just have a mess of out of sync noises

Comments

  • I have good sync between loopy, samplr, turnado, wow, Magellan, effectrix and sunrizer. This is all with ipad versions, can't comment on iPhone counterparts which I'm assuming you're using.

What are you using to sync? The individual controls in each app to choose midi in?

  • Loopy is known for sending a solid midi clock sync - it's worked well with almost anything I've hooked it up to.

I assume you are quite new to music creation on iOS?Be prepared to walk through a massive amount of sweat, blood and tears while trying to get your prefered apps to sync (i mean"solid"sync) to each other :(

@supadom:i wonder how"good"your sync really is.I can imagine it might be ok for live played/recorded stuff (guitars etc.)but i'm more into electronic dance music and in this case midi sync needs to be - absolutely - tight. That is a very very rare case.I can confirm that Effectrix works great but all the drum apps i have still don't cover my (sync)needs. The one that always stands out though is Funkbox .But fiddly when using own kits (or if you want to edit sounds).

  • Maybe this is not what you're asking, but I use hardware midi controller with clock out to keep sync and control midi CCs in apps.

It's only a question of enabling midi transport (in apps) and they respond minimum to start/stop

  • You'll have probably noticed @Crabman that I carefully chose a term 'good' rather than 'perfect' or 'rock solid' as there's no such thing on iOS as yet.

  • I don't know how you'd classify this kind of music but I regularly jam with the above mentioned bunch of apps and hardly ever get sync problems anymore. This includes running fast arps in samplr alongside the looper fx in turnado and loopy. Also delays in Magellan and lfos in sunrizer behave correctly. Sector is also very good. You're right though, as far as drum machines are concerned I'm yet to find a tight one. This is why I currently use simple 4 on the floor prerecorded loops in loopy.

  • I think I'd classify as Fleksi...

Love it! And a great example of finding a combination of apps that hold up to this type of use live. I keep trying new apps with my live rig, but have to bounce too many for not playing nice.

  • This is helpful. Wish ios would kick it up a notch and get some next level midi syncing tho
