StudioMux vs MusicIO ...which is better?

  • Midimux.net website has been down for at least 2 days, with no response from the Devs on their Facebook page. There doesn't seem to be any other location to download the server package. Would anyone be able to email me the latest Windows 32bit server installer, or upload it to Dropbox and send a link to the file? The Devs haven't responded on the Facebook page, and their Twitter hasn't been updated since October 2015. Pretty poor IMHO.

  • Hey GSM,
Next time please just send us an email, that way we will also see it on the weekend.
I've just rebooted the Server, the downloads should be fine again! Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Thanks, just see the website is up again

  • MusicIO is more plug and play with a simple setup and studiomux allows for far more configurability. MusicIO gives you four channels while studiomux gives you eight.
I prefer studiomux. Both these apps let you use your iPad as an external FX unit and it's pretty freakin' awesome.

  • I just got Sudiomux, which seems really good. I was unaware of Music IO. To use Studiomux, I had to install iTunes on my windows 7 PC which I didn't want to do. Does Music IO need iTunes too?

Music IO needs iTunes installed on the PC. iTunes doesn't have to be running, but there are some system utilities that have to be there in order to make a data connection to the iPad.

Studiomux works really well for me. My DAW is Tracktion in Windows 8.1. I haven't been able to get MusicIO working with Tracktion so far.

Could you share how exactly in all the steps you did to get audiomix to work in Tracktion? I spent half a day and couldn't make it work. Thanks!

  • @vitocorleone123 Sorry for the delay.

    Prerequisites
    • Latest Studiomux server installed on PC;
    • iPad connected to PC by Lightning to USB cable;
(I'm now on Windows 10, but I think it's all the same as for Windows 8.1).

    For Midi
Using Fugue Machine sending midi out to Tracktion.

    1. Open Studiomux and Fugue Machine on the iPad.
    2. Select MIDI option in Studiomux. Fugue Machine should show up as a Local Port -- you may have to select the two small circles under "source".
    3. Create a new virtual midi input in Tracktion (under Midi Devices) and call it, say IOStoPC.
    4. Make IOStoPC the input for a track in Tracktion.
    5. Insert any VST instrument in the same track in Tracktion.
    6. In Fugue Machine, IOStoPC should show up as a Midi Destination. Select it. It should now send midi to the VST.
    7. You can set the output of the track in Tracktion as the audio input to another track and record it from the second track.

    For Audio
This is much more straightforward. This time using Addictive Synth:

    1. Open Studiomux on the iPad.
    2. Select the Audio option in Studiomux and add Addictive Synth as a plug-in (drag Addictive Synth to a channel on Studiomux).
    3. Add the Studiomux Generator VST to a track in Tracktion.
    4. Play Addictive Synth and it should output audio to Tracktion.
    5. As above, you can set the output of the track in Tracktion as the audio input to another track and record it from the second track.

Note that the Studiomux VSTs/AUs and Servers, plus the manual, are available on Midimux.com.

Thanks!! Is there a way to send MIDI from Tracktion to a synth and then record the output into Tracktion? I can get the audio out into Tracktion working, where if I play notes on a synth on the idevice it'll register in Tracktion (though the output audio to another track step I was missing), but I'm looking to make the loop from Tracktion to the iPad or iPhone and then back into Tracktion.

I don't expect to be sending MIDI from the idevice to Tracktion vs. wanting to send MIDI from Tracktion to the idevice to trigger synths as virtual instruments. Creating a virtual MIDI port in Tracktion did NOT result in it being available on either my iPhone or iPad in studiomux or an app. That said, there's some tools out there that'd be interesting to play with (e.g., Arpeggionome Pro).

I'm also on Windows 10 and do have the latest studiomux everything installed. Alas, I didn't find the manual anywhere near as helpful as you!

Ok. I found ONE way to accomplish my goal (you got me thinking about some other routing). So if I use rtpMIDI to send MIDI over wifi to trigger the synth, I can use audiomux to then capture the audio. Not sure of the latency yet, but it seems totally "ok" at the moment.

To make this work in tracktion, and I literally just did this so will be exploring other ways or alternatives (if any exist), I dragged the audiomux generator vst into a track, left the track destination as is (default audio), and then loaded a tracktion INSERT plugin, placed before the audiomux generator vst. In the Send Device drop down I selected my rtpMIDI desination and left the Return Device as (maybe there's a better choice?). In the idevice instrument, I select the rtpMIDI as the input and leave the output as whatever - and I'm running audiomux on the device as well, of course.

Now it seems I can play my USB keyboard (track input) and it gets routed over wifi to my idevice, plays the synth, and the audio gets routed via lightning cable back into the computer and captured by the generator plugin. I can record the MIDI notes I play and then it'll play back. Rendering does seem to require bouncing to a new track, meaning the track output is set to a different track that can then be rendered before exporting the whole thing as an mp3 (for example).

  • Well done! My experience has all been with audio and midi into Tracktion. I've never felt the need to export audio or midi to iOS. In my view, iOS has a nice selection of midi generators (such as the fantastic Fugue Machine) which are more than adequate for my purposes.

BTW, I didn't find the manual helpful either. I was just pointing out how to access it, but afterwards I realised that it's actually accessible from within the Studiomux app, in any case. It's seems to be one more example of a VST or app manual which would benefit significantly from the simple application of a spellchecker.

Anyway, best of luck with your ongoing experimentation!
