TC-Orbiter is now a MIDI controller

TC-Orbiter just got an update. It now sends motion data as MIDI to any app via Virtual MIDI.

I am amazed at the capacity of this app. It sends a different CC for every imaginable orientation change.

At first test, it works great with very low latency. I tested it on iPhone 5S: TC-Orbiter >> Apollo on 5S >> BT 4.0>> Apollo on iPad Mini2 >> Animoog.

Pro: very accurate, fast response

Con: my battery on my 5S went from 30% to 10% in the 20 minutes I was testing this. Apparently the app uses a lot of resources to monitor all the movement.

Anyone have ideas or tips for making the most of this?

  • Thanks for the nudge, just bought this. I don't have an iPhone yet but should work well on my mini2, controlling my Air 2 or hardware....

  • There's a million options on some of these controller apps, but I can never figure out how you're supposed to select what key they're playing in.

This app is only for CC changes for adjusting paramaters of a synth, not sending notes. You would have to sequence or play the notes live in your sound-source app.

The possibilities with this are impressive. I will be spending some time really seeing what it can do.

  • Anyone know if there is a brief manual available? I can't sort out all the different parameters of movement that can be assigned.

For sending notes too you would need Tc-Data app

  • Well worth the $3 for the expressiveness it gives to your sequences by flailing, or lightly shifting, your arms and hands around.

I spent a good 40min yesterday with this plugged into N Log midi synth running a sequence. Reminiscent of beepstreets controller, but you can control EVERYTHING.

  • Um, I'm assuming you mean does it only control iOS synths. I know it uses Bluetooth to connect to your other iDevices so it can be used as an addition expessive instrument without flailing around a larger pad. It might to the same for a synth or daw on your Mac.

Yeah sorry, it says on the site controls any synth that receives midi. I need to get an iphone anyway, not to keen on flailing my iPad around, always that concern i could drop it...

The new feature includes "Bluetooth MIDI" to send MIDI data to a separate iOS device via BT4.0 connection. There are some Mac apps that receive Bluetooth MIDI also.

It also includes "Virtual MIDI" which means it will send MIDI data to any other MIDI app on the same device. Another MIDI app could then send that over "Network MIDI" via wi-fi or USB to a Mac/PC , etc.

So no, definitely not limited to controlling iOS devices. :-)

Flailing. My specialty. Thanks for the heads-up.

  • I have bought this because of you people, but I will flail alone. $2.99 for life's metaphor made glass and flesh. An utter bargain.

  • when my roommate isnt home i'm gonna duct-tape my phone to the dog with orbiter controlling various painful distortion-related CCs and see if i ascend to the level above human.

  • Awesome funness but am in immediate need of a large over-stuffed iPad case and perhaps a dedicated room with mattresses on the floor, walls and ceiling. If only I'd had this sucka back in my unmourned padded cell days....

    Very cool.

I can't remember but can you use touch with this app?

I generally hate waving any iDevice around but if it had all the programable touch stuff of TC DAta on an iPhone into Bluetooth LE that would be super dupa.

  • I'm pretty sure it's just gyroscope.

  • tc-data has the touch.

  • Ah. Ok. Thanks.

    Shame TC data isn't iPhone
