APPS you BOUGHT and NEVER USED?

Arpeggionome Pro ---------tried once and never opened again.

Auria - waiting for pro version to dive in and bought on sale

Actually is a few more. Geez, what a waste of money.

Am I alone?

Comments

  • I have a few that I've only spent 5-10 minutes playing with - can't remember any specific ones off hand (ipad is not with me right now). But yeah, you are not alone.

I also have a few apps that I've spent a bit of time (maybe 5-10 hours) trying to learn or like, but it just never clicked so I've pretty much given up on ... Beatmaker2 is a good example - I probably have 8-10 projects that I started in BM2 but never went anywhere.

And then there are a select few apps I own that I know are good, and I've managed to squeeze out a few loops or musical ideas ... but for some reason just don't get opened anymore ... Nanostudio is perfect example for me. The 2nd music app I bought, I used it for a month or two - and then got "app-fever" and started purchasing more and more apps and Nanostudio got lost in the shuffle. (but I just got a new iphone6 few weeks ago and have used NS a few times since - gotta love universal apps)

  • App I spent the most money on and never used: ChordWeaver. Seems like a unique app, but I could never figure out what to do with all of those wonky chord progressions it makes. At least I only paid $20 and not the $50 original price.

Learn to use auria now, don't wait for pro. It's going to make pro much more enjoyable.

And no, you're definitely not alone...i have WAYYY too many apps I don't use ever. I just said in another thread I think I may slim it down to just auria and gadget to see what happens. Oh, and probably imini because I use that live.

  • You have to try things. Why not? iOS apps are cheap enough that you can do that.

on a song of mine i wanted to manipulate some audio with a turntable scartching type sound. slow it down and speed it up by hand if that makes any sense. so i found two apps:

scratchpad - it sucks. its just a loop launch pad thing. i dont do live music, so for me its useless, bought it because of the name, thinking "scratchpad = scratching" you can do it, but its no good. just sucks. probably used it for less than 8mins.

traktor dj - it was on sale with ismachine, so i got both. i end up using this for the idea i had [this was way before i knew of samplr, or even tape! which is free, and you can do some simple ass scratching with it too] anyway, i have no use for this app, except for playing with the pitch of the audio files. i think i spent 20mins max and never again.

gumdrops - i just didnt like it. i think i spent 5mins and that was enough.

zmors modular - doesnt run well enough on my ipad4 to use. runs very choppy and glitches out a lot. so ill never get to use it unless i upgrade to a newer ipad i guess.

yumi synth - i have yet to downloaded it.

bias amp - mistakenly bought it thinking it was amp one. and even if i had bought amp one, i would not be using it because i dont have an audio interface that supports ipad connection. saving for a zoom uac2. so untill i get it, no use for it.

  • Thanks @Brain for doing all the work!

  • me too,
    WOW, glitchbreaks, Tenori, Jasuto, Soundprism.........,
lots of apps, & will buy & try more :-)
but you have to focus on these apps which have for YOU the most fun to play or intuitiv to use....
it helps if you have just a old iPAd with 16GB ;-)

  • Far too many...

However, it's not the end of the world, considering there's stuff on the desktop that I don't use that cost a whole lot more ! Also, perhaps these apps are just dormant - just waiting for their time to come, to burst into musical life ?

  • I've got so many apps, lots are lying dormant. But the litmus test for me is whether an app makes it's way into a finished track or not. So my hall of shame would include: Earhoof, Thesys, Arpeggionome, Photophore, Grain Science, Peotein DK, iMPC Pro, Thesys, Loopy, Diode-108, Soundprism Pro, Guitar Capo+, and a recently purchased Stria might make the list if I continue to struggle to get anything out of it aside from random farty squeaks.

Have a look at the tutorials ..... But the basic workflow is export them to midi then deconstruct the chords into melody an harmony.

My most shamefully non used app has to be Auria.

  • I am including apps that I may have messed around with but have either not used at all or not used more than once for a tune.

    Loopy HD
MIDIBand (not used yet but intend to when I get some time to learn it)
    Voice Synth
    iVoxel
    Nave
    DM1
    ThumbJam
    Lemur
    iKaossilator
    iMPC Pro
    AudioBus (Yes, it's true !)

The thread couldn´t handle my list here ;)
But to name the most expensive ones:
    Auria
Nave (but asked and got a refund for it)
    Cubasis

There are also a lot which i used just for a while and then never again. But for a buck i got my value from these apps.

  • I'm saving them all up for a rainy day.

  • I think the positive here (for me) is seeing the apps on other people's lists which I consider daily pleasures and realizing that apart from some lemons most poison is meat.

Don't you mean 'spend all the money'?
Not a list set in stone, to be sure...

  • This list makes me kinda glad I don't jump on the bandwagon and buy every app when it first comes out because it seems new and exciting. I got burned way too many times in the past, mostly with newly released game apps. Quite a few music apps seem like... if they were the only music apps available on ios you would spend the time to learn how to use them well and they would be just great. I think we get spoiled and if we find out they're not super intuitive or user friendly we dismiss them too quickly. Beatmaker and Jam Maestro are 2 good examples of this for me.

  • Hmm lets see (I think I have a lot in common with everyone, especially @monzo): Earhoof
    Cotracks
    iMPC Pro
    Protein der Klang
    Theys
    Guitar capo plus
@JohnnyGoodyear 's favorite alien app Mixtikl
    Jam Maestro

  • Mixtikl he says in his best Seinfeld Newman voice....I do agree with @Coloobar and have a pretty certain feeling that if left with nothing else to play I might make something good with Jam Maestro, but....

  • For me it's looking on sites like App Shopper (where you can set it to show all changes in music apps), seeing an app is on sale or updated with something cool, and buying it because the sale is too tempting or because an app now uses Audiobus, etc... Have tons bought this way. I have 153 apps on my 64GB Air 2 including the Apple apps and a few everyone has (Chrome, etc) but most are iOS music making apps.

Amplitube is a big one I don't use, and when I got it there was a sale on the all IAP's bundle for like half off so I bit. I was disappointed pretty quickly at the thin and uninspired sounds of alot of the amp models and looked at some other apps to see if it was just IK Multimedia's doing or common to all iOS guitar apps.

Well, after experimenting with the excellent TubeStack and Peavey's AmpKit I saw that it was indeed Amplitube that was just not very good. So, I rarely, if ever use it.

  • Fiddlewax, Hokusai, Sequence, SampleWiz, LoopTree, Launchpad, Traktor, AmpliTube, Everest, Noisepad, djay, Looptical, TinPan Rhythm, mmmmm

mmmmm.... Caustic (which I tried but stopped using because no Midi out)

  • In my list is mostly stuff i have to make an effort for. Modular apps and complex sequencers and such. Sunvox, Audulus, Analogkit, Lemur to name a few. I'm just too lazy.
