Don't forget to leave lots of room in your mix for the bass; to whatever extent is reasonable, roll off the low frequencies of everything else with EQ, preferably a shelving type high pass.
Great tips guys!!
About the layering? How well would the following work: A regular bass sound, layered with another bass layer (using a sub oscillator using a sine wave at a low frequency played a couple of octaves below the regular bass) to deepen the bass sound. Would this work? If this is something that works, what might I do to further improve the sound? EQ the frequencies of the two layers so they don't overlap? Compression and gain?
think it totally depends on what you're trying to do and what you're using as source layers and why.
The Eden method I barfed out earlier is doing essentially what you're asking about. One regular bass sound (OSC 1) and one sub/sine wave (OSC 2). The Aux envelope acts as a blend control.
Fx-wise, surely would be interesting to experiment with stereofield, mid/side (reverb), equing simultaneously played sources (simply with midi omni).
In Seskbeats - find a kick you like - find another kick or tom - roll off the attack and adjust till it fits the beat. You can make a deep sub from just a 808 sample this way. Add reverb and other efx if you want more craziness.
Very nice Bass topic by the way.
iKaossilator has a handful of nice basses, Ive made some DnB tracks with it. For processing, Final Touch has good features including multiband compression.
Dublin in Gadget >mic drop<
Hey, you dropped your mic on my iPhone (which doesn't run gadget).
hehe, I was trying to think of a good one. That works.
This is on iPad, isem specifically, so I don't know if it will help the iPhone question (I haven't heard it in a while, I forgot that I did it!), But if you do want to hear it, here it is:
Nah, the best one is Gadget doesn't have a preset in Dublin called mic drop.. ::p
Cyclop has extra sub bass, Poseidon can go low down too with the built in EQ effect. Mind your ears ladies.
I've been wondering about iKaossilator as a synth. Maybe there will be some sales on it sometime....
It's definitely something I'm interested in and I am learning a lot from everyone!! :-)
I'll have to experiment with this--I just picked Seekbeats up in a sale.
Cool! Thanks!
Excellent tip!! Thanks!!
I found it very informative!! Thanks!!
You're welcome, glad it was helpful. That was before I was able to shoot video. Isem sounds great for synth bass though.
Cyclop!!!!
@mrufino1 You rock! I encourage everyone to do the same - tutorials via video or audio. Devs feel free to do the same. In a new ecosphere, especially in a new paradigm of touch and limited menu-ing, offered by the iPad/iPhone, there needs to be a use case example of how an "instrument" can be or could be optimally played.
I often find that muddling through can lead to confusion, and a disgruntled feeling towards the developer and the app that might be better served by circumventing the TL;DR manual(s).
PS Happy Turkey day, and in all seriousness thank you all, devs and users, for making iOS a viable and vibrant music making place.
I'll say that I wish there was an iPhone-only version of this Audiobus group. I'd love to know there is a good chance that most all of what I read there might potentially have a benefit.
And no, an iPad is not in the cards for me (unless it's a Xmas gift, and whomever had better get some specs from me beforehand - I don't want surprises, I want the right gadget).
I would be so excited if Cyclop really were on the iPhone...... :-( Thanks though!!!
See what I mean? ;-)
Hehe.. Nicely timed!
