Multi-track interface options

I'm interested in recording my monthly jams into Auria or some other DAW, but I haven't figured out the best way to go about it.  I have an Akai EIE, but that only covers four analog inputs.  I need 6-8 combi jacks, as I want to throw some mics in the mix, and those are XLR plugs.  I'd also like to have one or more USB ports for midi...using midi controllers and an electronic drum kit driving synths and drum apps on the iPad.  I have an iPad mini retina and iPad4, so I need to keep an eye on CPU too.  I also want it to support multi-tracking, rather than handing off a single stereo output.  Price is important as well.  Any suggestions??

Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 or 18i8 ...just cause I like my 2i2

... just missing the USB ports.  Add in a USB hub and you're all set
  • Thanks @Hmtx.  They're not as expensive as I had imagined.  The only downside would be the midi, since it uses DIN jacks, and most of my gear s USB, but that shouldn't be too tough to deal with.
  • Focusrite 18i20. Not just for multitracking in, also for stand-alone jamming without the Pad present. Has main and two headphone monitoring outputs, and remembers the heaphone mix monitor settings when detached (unlike the Presonus equivalent, which (used to?) relies on a PC program to do that). Also not too expensive to expand to 16 channels with an ADAT I/O box. Inside, Auria, Cubasis, MultiTrackDAW all handle it nicely, as does MiMix.

Use a USB hub to get the 18i20 and all your other USB MIDI gear into the CCK. I've yet to overload the MIDI side, even with a 7 port hub cascaded to a 3 port hub. If you need to cascade, make sure the audio interface is on the hub closest to the CCK.
  • Thanks @dwarman.  This sounds like the ticket.  Now to see who is still looking for a Christmas gift for me.
