Phase 84. Great synth. Currently £4.

Just picked this up and I really like it. Nice mix of FM and more organic sounds. Like the gate sequencer too. Sounds good, fully featured. What's not to like, really.

Reminds me a bit of FM4 but it's easier to get more usable patches out of this.

  • Yep- a steal for the price
  • Still waiting for the update that fixes some problems on startup in iOS9, but I agree,  there are some great sounds to be had here, and a bargain @ £4
  • No Audiobus though, that's not to like....

    I agree.

You know though, lately I have tried being open to more IAA via Cubasis with this and ITuttle and am surprisingly happy.   ITuttle in particular.  It is one of the best apps I have used for live workflow and quality "full"and real sounding synth with guts.   All in a mono nonetheless.

I found using 1 IAA in addition to Audiobus gives me the ability to run more apps at once per project and channel in Audiobus.  I am all about single take session recording for true live vibe and transitions.

Just something I have found in the last couple months.
  • @RustiK Yes. When IAA is working it's great, especially not having to use midi sync. There is a workaround with this app and Audiobus: use it in Audioshare as an iAA and put Audioshare through Audiobus. Not ideal but useful :)
  • It just had a update to fix iOS 9 issues.

Can you do this live, or do you have to first record into a AudioShare, and then play it back into Audiobus, and route it to your destination?

I had no luck doing it live. If possible, how?

I tried it live for few minutes, Phase84 still a little buggy. Sometimes no some was out if I put effects on Audioshare, sometimes phase84 disappeared on Audioshare slot. Air2 iOS9.1

I tried it for a few minutes but I haven't tried for long. I was using Phase84 as an IAA instrument in audioshare and Mobile convolution as an IAA effect. This seemed to work in Audiobus input slot but then when I try to record to MTS via Audiobus it doesn't work.
  • I'd read in the AppStore reviews that it worked in Audiobus this way without really trying it properly but as it seems to be working well in IAA then best using it that way anyway.
  • Update for Phase 84 to fix the iOS9 crashes on start up hit the app store today.  Downloaded and started it,  it starts fine now.  Not done anything more than that with it though,  will be having a play later this evening.

Does Phase84 support the 13"iPad Pro or is it merely upscaled?

I've asked them, but there was no answer. I've emailed the developer couple times with basic questions about their products, but they have never bothered to respond. It seems very much in keeping with the extremely negative comments that are usually present in any platform (news sites [Synthopia is particuarly critical of them], forums, Youtube, etc) where their products are mentioned.

I wish to try this synth, but the prevailing critique that they don't update their apps much (which is true when I look at "Version History) and fix long-standing bugs, and this experience with their customer indifference, I'm hesistant to support them. But I'm also so in love with their attention to design, aesthetics and function, something so rare amongst instrument makers, that I might have to get it nonetheless.

  • Phase84 is alright, but some of the other more well known apps from that circle of 'iOS standard' high quality synths will get used & played more because of the lack of AudioBus.

IAA is okay, I'd much rather have it than not, but I just dig AudioBus's ease of use and other features better (AB Remote, the visual feedback etc.)

The synth I just discovered that I had no clue was so badass is TF7. I always thought it was a kind of niche thing, kinda like Seline but after reading about it and it's FM qualities I got it a few days ago.

Now, this weekend I also got 3 of the Virsyn synths (Cube, MicroTera & Tera) that are usually universally praised, and I would say TF7 totally holds its own, sound wise, with those.

It does falter with its layout for editing parameters and the big one is no keyboard. Instead it has the control pads that allow expression with small finger movements (vibrato, whammy, etc.), which of course are easy to overcome with a MIDI controller hook up but it makes quick on the move stuff difficult for those who prefer keyboard when playing, recording, etc (well, who doesn't).
