Rumor: iPhone 7 may ditch headphone jack?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/12/01/iphone-7-headphone-jack-rumor-report/76591864/

This report is pure speculation, and we know how unreliable Apple rumors can be.  But I'm still trying to wrap my head around what this would mean for the iPhone as a music device.  The article notes that Bluetooth headphones are becoming more popular, but in my opinion, they aren't _that_ popular yet, and there are serious audio quality and connectivity issues with them.  At least to the point where I wouldn't want them replacing the 3.5mm jack as the standard.

Other issues that come to mind:

  • If audio comes out of the Lightning jack, does this mean you can't charge the device and listen to music without a separate adapter?
  • For guitar players or iOS musicians using external audio sources, how do you use the Lightning jack for headphones if it's blocked by an audio source?  (another adapter?)
  • How bulky/expensive would a 3.5mm to Lighting adapter be?  Presumably this is possible, since we already have Lighting to 30-pin/SD Card/CCK/USB.

  • Not the only problems, Audio app's and Audiobus itself have big problems with Bluetooth audio output.
  • Knowing Apple this kind of stupidity is quite possible, although I really would not want to buy a phone that doesn't accept a standard headphone jack, listening to music on headphones is just about the most important function on an iPhone IMO. Sure you can buy a $25 adapter, but you shouldn't have to.
  • Time to ditch lightning as well. Been around for too long.
  • Maybe we'll get a 'spider' with 4+ 'legs' hehe...

    - Lightning Port for Charging
    - CCK/USB-Port (Most likely USB-C with adaptor).
    - Headphone Jack
    - Audio/Mic In

Or then again maybe it will all be USB-C and spawn a market for 3rd party HUBs with all kinds of stuff we all want :)

Yeah, it definitely seems possible from Apple, though let's hope it doesn't actually happen.  What's maddening about these types of changes is when they're done for obvious proprietary/financial reasons, as opposed to innovation and moving the technology forward.  I'm not saying there aren't problems with the 3.5mm jack - it was the mechnical failure point on at least two of my early Apple devices.  But it remains an industry standard, and it's the style of wired interface used by every great set of headphones or earbuds, regardless of manufacturer, country of origin, etc.

Companies like Sony lost a lot of goodwill with me by insisting on their own proprietary data stick instead of an SD card, and Apple is no stranger to this type of thing already with what they do to prevent you from expanding device storage.  This would be colossal blunder, in my opinion.

The iPhone 7 will transfer digital data direct to your brain via bluetooth-matrix connect, no need for any connections. Of course they will upload automatic a software into your brain to get your head sandboxed against the rest of the non-apple world........

This is actually an issue with iOS itself. I have heard various explanations around why it's so. Perhaps they are going to fix this.

That rumor has been around for a while now. I sure hope they aren't stupid enough to actually make that move. And, even though Apple have a history of ditching essential ports and features for the sake of thinnes, innovation, profit or whatever, I can't see them doing this. It would piss way too many customers off. If they really still wanted to make the devices even thinner, which IMHO wouldn't have any benefit at all besides a slightly reduced weight, They could still keep the headphone jack, as the iPod Touch 6G and some of the nano stuff show. But how about the camera then? it's already sticking out on iPhones because they couldn't get it thinner without worsening the image quality. If they really did it I'm sure it would definitely backfire on them in a massive way. I don't think it's really going to happen any time soon.
  • For whatever it's worth, I've seen this rumor since the 4s. I'm voting hogwash on it.

  • I don't think it's true but if it is Apple probably getting rid of the headphone jack and amplifier to make room for more or bigger components.

  • This sadly smells like something Apple would do.
  • For whatever it's worth, I've seen this rumor since the 4s. I'm voting hogwash on it.

    I second that motion.

    But the beats headphones :/

If this rumour turns out to be true then my iPhone 6S+ will be the last iPhone I will own. Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't plugging earphones into a lightning adapter draw more power from the phone and make battery life an issue unless the new iPhone 7 has a much better battery.
  • They have filed a patent on a variation of the 3.5mm socket that only connects with just over half of the circumference of the jack plug, but it still accepts standard 3.5mm jack.  Perhaps this is what has re-sparked this rumour.

They should just keep the current thickness. What's the point of making it even thinner? I think they have reached a point of diminishing returns now. Any thinner and the thing will bend even more easily, camera will suffer and the battery life would get worse as well. Really not a good idea to make the phones even thinner.

Yes, maybe they make it so thin that you can use it as credit card and put it into a slot.
I really don't get that "thinner".

  • That will be terrible. Like when macs took away the audio/mic input. Tragjic.
  • Have enough stress not going to borrow more......................

It was sorta tragic for musicians but I'd guess 90% of their customers never used it (or were plenty happy with the new accommodations).

Headphone out jack on the iPhone is very very different in terms of adoption. I'm sticking with hogwash.

Smaller or missing 3.5 mm jack does not necessarily equate to thinner, where thinner is possible, it also means more space in the current size,  more space = more battery
  • The comments section on that article is entertainment gold.

I think products like that are proof that Apple absolutely WOULD do something like this if it was at all practical from a business standpoint. As long as they view Digital headphone connections as a elite high-end option, we're safe.

Side issue here - I actually didn't hate the original ear buds that Apple packed into iPods and phones until about two years ago, but once they switched to that angular in-ear piece, I HATE them. I probably have larger than average ears (or something), but if you get the fit wrong on earbuds, it completely destroys the sound. I used to use foam wraps on the old kind because sealing that in your ear canal considerably increases the bass response. Simple things like that and cord tangling - it amazes me there hasn't been more effort to figure that out.

  • I wonder if that dac and headphone amp included in those headphones get enough juice out of a tiny iPhone?
However, they can make a thinner iPhone 7 then..... we all want our devices thin as air..... wtf!

  • The iPhone will become so thin we don't even need it!!

  • The future is amazing.

Funny thing is - they already made a thinner iPhone, then made it either the same or slightly thicker (can't remember) when they went from 6 to 6s because of the infamous "butt curve" phenomenon. I suppose materials could continue to improve, but physics are physics, and there are limits to how thin these things should realistically be if we're throwing them in bags, pockets, etc.

  • Interesting outlook.

There is no doubt they'll make lightening headphones. If they do come out with an adapter, there will also need to be a way to charge the device while using it. On the conspiracy end of things, perhaps at the very least Apple is curious about how the public will respond to the ganking of the 3.5 mm headphone jack. If a solution is included in the purchase price people might not complain too much. Audiophiles are always complaining about the iOS DACs anyway and the availability of cheaper more plentiful options in this realm might be welcome by many. I think many people would be leery about laying down the dough for lightening only headphones though given how it's unique to Apple and as the video says, Apple will change I/O with little to no advanced notice.

My thinking is that Apple will introduce the lightening only headphones first to establish their superior performance versus traditional headphones and gank the 3.5 mm headphones after that or perhaps offer lightening only models with some superior performance features the 3.5 mm model doesn't have sort of along the lines of regular/plus/s or do an alternating year release bringing back 3.5 mm model if the lightening only model (iPhone 7t) doesn't sell well enough while they continue to sell the 6s models.
