Good app for scale practice in the context of improvisation?

Hello,

As an intermediate, self-taught guitar player, I am (slowly) improving my grasp of different scale forms (modes of the major and harmonic minor scales, pentatonic scales, some arpeggio forms, etc.) Sometimes I record a loop with a few backing chords to make practicing a scale more interesting. However, what would be great an app which (a) provided backing chords, either made up or from a recognizable song and (b) indicated where to switch keys and scales in the accompaniment.

I have a couple jam apps which have blues backing tracks, for example, but the advice is them to essentially jam in A-minor pentatonic. I am thinking of something with more variety and more challenging in terms of switching scales, keys, etc.

Does such as app exist? If not, is there a good Internet / book resource? I know there are some amazing guitarists / keyboardists on this forum. Thank you in advance.

Thanks.

  • Love going through YT backing tracks!  Another avenue is Guitar Toolkit.  You can create chord sheets based on scales.  Really useful for me and sounds like what you're looking for.
  • Hey @TrustButVerify ;

    I'd suggest iReal Pro. It's got backing tracks and also the chord/scale prompts functionality you mention. All of those used to be pricey IAPS but all of the IAPS are now free.

    It does veer towards a more jazzy direction, but does cater for other styles too.  Certainly worth checking out, I don't think you'll regret buying it. Maybe watch some youtube vids.

    I'm on a desktop but this should be an appstore link.. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ireal-pro-music-book-play/id298206806?mt=8

    Good luck.
  • I will second iReal Pro. This is exactly what I use it for. Great resource. Lots of existing chord progressions/songs, and you can make your own. You can also change the key and tempo with a couple of clicks.

    Other thing that's great, but not an app, is RockSmith 2015. Session mode is basically a ready made backing track maker. You can specify the instrumentation, complexity, key/mode. You start playing, it plays harder or softer depending on how you are playing, and tells you if you are in key or not.
  • Thanks for the suggestions about iReal Pro. I own that app so will look into it more tonight.

    I guess what I was ideally hoping to find were explicit suggestions about scales to play over chord changes. Of course, this is a matter of taste or personal preference, but if an experienced player / teacher laid out "play A-minor for three bars, then play A harmonic minor over the E, then the song modulates to D minor so play D-minor or D-minor pentatonic..." that would be a great learning tool.

    Thanks, that looks interesting as well to hear chord changes that work well under the different scales. I'll give it a try.
