Thread Creation Pride and Ego

So I did it again! Created a shiny new thread from thin air for the whole world to see and hopefully contribute in huge quantities. I will keep checking back about the view and post count hourly and make sure to read and, if possible, reply to every comment ever made in it.
I found there seems to be an ego thing about thread creation that I particularly felt when I was the first guy creating a thread about the iPad Pro, or at least I thought I was first. Then someone posted as second post that there was already a thread about the keynote which also mentioned the iPad Pro, suggesting it should be discussed over there and not in my great newly composed thread I was so proud of. I felt offended. Luckily people also got interested in my thread over time and it kind of grew to the iPad Pro mega thread with nearly 10k views and lots and lots of pages. It made me feel really important and proud about having created it. Then, when the iPad Pro actually arrived some more iPad Pro threads were created and mine, the mother of them all, got completely buried and forgotten by everybody except the proud creator. I desperately tried to revive it every once in a while but I realized I was the only one left in the greatest thread of all time. After a couple of tries I gave up. Other threads were now considered more relevant and it was time to accept that mine had tragically died a sad and lonely death.
When I saw the new app Funk Drummer I was so very eager to be the first person on earth to post about it. And maybe I was. But who cares? I do! Weird, isn't it? It doesn't matter at all to the rest of the world but it feels sooooo important. I guess there's the feeling of accomplishment, recognition and also respect from the community that drives this. The fact is it's satisfying to have a thread going that becomes very active and to have been the cause for that. And there can be jealousy about other people's creations versus mine. Some people would often create threads about just some small thing that's just a little side note that could easily go in the main thread already existing about the greater subject. Others would keep posting thread after thread while it's actually a series that could just be one big discussion. But maybe it feels so good to have created 10 threads in a week or so. Certainly seems more significant than just one thread, I guess. Or when people deliberately create new threads about subjects that are already being discussed elsewhere. Often people would start threads about new apps with just the link to it, no comment or description at all. Or people who want to write the longest post ever (who, me?) or have the most quotations ever... Judging and being judged by fellow members as very important/unimportant dude, superior/inferior, always correct/grumpy ignorant, righteous/sympathetic mature/childish funny/boring, smart/stupid etc... People are strange :-). And why do we care so much about ourselves and are sometimes only waiting to be rude to others?
I don't want to criticize any members for posting the way they do but I thought maybe it would be interesting to discuss the psychologic aspects of forum behavior? Not sure I have much more to say about it, though. But some of our more mature and experienced members may have some good thoughts about all this kind of thing? Any psychologists around here?
I feel very relevant having started a new thread with vital content and XXL format. Is this what they call mental masturbation?

Comments

  • Nevermind, I think it is called mental. And masturbation. But it is fun anyways.
  • Does anyone really care who actually starts a thread? I'm not sure anyone is keeping score.

The main purpose of forum contributions is to help and share information IMO, ego should hopefully not come in to it...
  • And upon special request I will keep posting my new insights on a semi hourly basis as well.
Btw, is there any way to delete an entire post? The only thing I could find is to type edit and replace the whole text with a space or something. Surely there must be something to wipe the post entirely?
  • You sound like me when I take adderall again after an extended break/withdrawal.
  • Sounds like me when I'm drunk with me headphones on ranting about how nobody wants to listen to the tunes I'm making

100% agreed but I found this to be my experience that there can be quite some ego involved strangely.
  • oh yes, this is a real thing.  it feels good to come up with an idea that people want to talk about.  But for the sake of the forum... it seems like most of this should stay on facebook, and only bring over relevant iOS music topics here.

I thought it's pretty "general" and I don't usually do much face booking. Also this is about this very community, not about FB, so it can't stay there because it doesn't belong there. If you don't want to discuss it just ignore it.
  • I think this still qualifies as meta and not off-topic. Anyway, I really don't want to go to Facebook if I can help it.

I've noticed it. Specifically one member who has started many redundant threads for app releases when there was already one in existence. Call me cynical but I don't think they simply overlooked the other threads.

And you're right, it shouldn't and usually doesn't make any difference.
  • I disagree. I think it really matters to the initial poster. In the end it's a sign of other people finding one's own thoughts interesting enough to talk about them. It might not matter to the other participants though.
  • The opening post of this thread is honest and interesting. I read it all. Creating a competing thread was my dash at humour and also a nod to topic.

After the miserable 7 pages I read of the Auria thread (that Developer btw should be rejoicing in the fruits of his hard work and showered with gratitude, not doused in sh*t) this was a thought provoking read, and a good distraction.

Maybe some people are just starved of love and attention...
  •  I just ignore all the redundant thread starters.
  • I think by and large a thread gets more posts because it's about a topic people are interested in. It does seem to be the case that people like others who share their interest so I can see how that would be validating. At times threads can get lots of posts because some people in the thread are upset with each other and there can be a temptation to get in the last word, to defend themselves, or denigrate the other person. Perhaps people sometimes create polarizing thread titles to attract more interest in a thread which is a common strategy in the mass media.

My personal preference would be for people to resist the urge for personal attacks and retaliation. None of us are obligated to participate on these forums or read, let alone respond to any particular thread. Being people with feelings, there will be flare ups from time to time but hopefully tolerance and respect will prevail.
  • Interesting thread, think I have thread envy
  • I don't know the answer to your question, but I am sure someone will come along soon that knows.

  • I'm too humble to post anything on this thread -- oops!

  • @Munibeast: I'm very interested in these kinds of things, thus appreciate your starting of this thread! Apart from Ego-mechanism not in the right place at all, it still is happening, and IMHO very much part of the arising of misunderstandings and riots in an otherwise calm nice forum like this. I also personally believe, these little proud egoshows inside of us make up the root of aggression and violence (much further down the line, of course), (this as a little wink to @Flo26, in the other Auria-thread...).

Just my 0.0002 cents, different opinions welcome and appreciated.

Cheers and hooray to the great Thread-composer!!
  • Basically, yes. Most of what you note is probably right.

But let's not be too hard on each other. And ourselves. It's a pretty great forum and people generally get along very well...

  • never meant to be hard on anybody/anything, quite the contrary: understanding something about my own nature makes it much easier to tolerate (and even appreciate), when someone else acts similarly... (And boy!, can I get angry and pissed off (ego-hurt), far from every relation to reason or rhyme)...,
life is good, we should hug someone and enjoy...
