Beatwave update

edited December 2015 in General App Discussion

New packs, plus you can create your own instruments and import sounds...

EDIT: Actually you can import through Audioshare, not just iTunes, just click on the "More" button to add Audioshare to the list.

I forgot how deep this app is. The browser is still kind of disorganized with multiple categories of the same name, but I think it's about time to spend more time with this app, never having spent much time with it in the first place.

  • Yeah. Was about to add a note on this. I think for some folks here the ability to now add your own 'instruments' which is essentially opening a file/wave from Audioshare/elsewhere and then play with it pretty considerably is no small packet of goodness.

I keep coming back to this being a far better songwriter than most us give it credit for. Going to spend a few hours with it again this afternoon and add loops into Auria Pro and see what can be done...
  • It's jam packed with features, even has the evolving note randomizer.

One small disappointment with the new instrument creator, can't seem to access any of the drum sounds in the packs, only the default Beatwave drum sounds of which there are only a few. Puzzling that they would not let you access any of the drum sounds from the various kits, or maybe you can and I'm just not seeing it.

Haven't got amongst it yet, but the fact that -like many of us- I have ten thousand one shots sitting about the place, now being able to bring them in via AS/DBox/Document -is a lovely thing.

It's been so long since I really worked Beatwave that I hardly remember how it all works AND there's no question that while not overly-complicated it IS a little quirky in its own logic, BUT there's a whole lot to like, especially with this new flexibility....

Reminds me...I wish tnri was a bit simpler and quicker to use.

I see your thought, but disagree with it. I have tenori and admire it, but don't get there with it...

Apologies if I was too quick to try and understand you Sir.

... apologies, how precious they are ...
sir - how gentle, really, understatement, how fitting a noble man like you ... Thank you.
Always admired tenoriists, it does have midi (out), you say? The -on ? Sir.

  • Yeah, doesn't seem to be a way to access the sound packs for custom kits, which is a shame because that would have been useful.

My memory is being refreshed: some solid effects in this app, and the song mode lets you put together some different things.

    A nifty little app.

  • I had downloaded this apparently some time ago and wiped it off my iPad.  Not sure why because this really is quite fast at building up things that sound really good.  I just may have to go pro with this given how well this free version works!  There is quite a bit in pro to add it seams.  Damn another 10'r I can see flying out of the wallet soon!
  • And, it is on the Bus also!  I just checked to be sure.  Woot!

You're right, there's currently no way to access the existing sounds. Thanks for the feedback though, will definitely be something we'll look at for the next release :)

iTunes import is available via the 'iTunes File Sharing' option in the import menu. Just drag a folder (or files) of samples into iTunes File Sharing and you'll be good to go.
  • Wow, huge update @djfumberger, thanks! This was one of the first apps I got for my iPad 3 in 2012, it has come a loooong way.

I said not just iTunes, because I initially thought it was only iTunes, and then I discovered you can add Audioshare too.

Good to hear about the custom drum kits, and adding access to all the kits in an update, as that would be a good feature.

If you could sort out the browser too I think it would help. Currently there are a few categories with the same name. Might be good to group those together for better organization.

Sorry, my mistake, I missed the 'just'

The categories are based on category information inside the individual instruments. Sounds like some instruments have had a slightly wrong category entered in for and so is causing a double up. Will take a look ! Thanks.

  • Rekindled love? Check! Thanks for all this work @djfumberger

I've had Beatwave forever but I'm loving the new update...

I use it for cray generative type stuff... Load some instruments up, add effects, draw some notes, turn up the randomness and bliss out... >:)

    Thanks for the feedback though

More feedback if you're still there:

How about an option to follow the marker along the timeline, from one screen to the next when playing? Currently it stays on one screen, which is understandable for editing, but being able to follow the song automatically as it plays from screen to screen would be a nice addition.

    A simple but elegant +1

  • @djfumberger Just noticed those little windows below the main piano roll follow the timeline, but they are pretty small on iPhone, so maybe simply making them slightly bigger would be a good solution for following the song along the timeline. Seems like there's room on the interface for that.

The only other feedback that comes to mind is adding effects automation. Yeah you can record effects movements as performance when recording, but that only goes so far. It would be pretty cool to have automation for effects, both on the mixer page and the individual effects page, and even volume control come to think of it. I realize that's a pretty significant feature to consider, but the effects are one if this app's strengths and automation would make them that much better.

    Just a thought! :)

  • Just wanted to say a big thank you for this update

Beatwave was always among my favourite apps but with this update it's easily number 1

  • @djfumberger Sorry to bump this thread, but can we get Link in this? That would be amazing. If it's on the way, you are the best :)

Is Beatwave still an ongoing project?
