Personally, this product seems ridiculous... or at best inferior to other options.
It is enormous for one thing. Why would a simple storage device need to be so big? It looks like something from 2002.
And all of us already have lightning to USB adapters, so why not just plug in any old flash drive and get the exact same functionality?
The only marketing edge this product has is a "seamless file transfer" feature which sounds like some proprietary app that syncs photos and videos to the iOS photo folder, not even sure if iOS allows anything other than those two file types over a direct lightning connection.
So ...sorry for the rant... please don't take it personally.
For me a better solution is wireless hubs that create a wifi network and can transfer your files that way. I have the HooToo Nano http://amzn.com/B00HZWOQZ6 I can plug any size USB drive into it for backup and transfers. There are other HooToo options that have an internal battery if you are away from power. This solution works great for me and might even be faster than the USB 2.0 speeds over lightning connector.
Also, SanDisk makes their own https://www.sandisk.com/home/mobile-device-storage/connect-wireless-stick You would have to research and see if it is limited to SanDisk's apps or if it will connect with FileBrowser or other file management apps on iOS so you can save and "open in" your music apps as needed.
I've just got one of these and I'm pretty impressed, so far.
While it was pretty pricey and I'm not keen on having to touch the lightning connector every time I attach it to the device (not great regarding clean connections) it does what I was hoping for.
It allows some kind of file management - creating folders / renaming things in the app itself and with Audioshare, I can see it may well be a good way of moving files around from PC to idevices. Pretty good for working with images too.
I did a quick video about this last week...here's the ab forum link:

@TozBourne
Yes, it was your video that was very helpful in me deciding to buy the iXpand !
I'd be very interested to learn how you got this work. It doesn't work for me.
^ whew, well I guess I was in a bad mood that day! thats kinda embarrassing. I don't usually rant on products for no reason. I'm sure it works fine for some people.
@Washboy you are quite right, I don't think that the lightning to USB adapter will allow you to plug in a USB drive and access it.[edit: beyond photo and video files] So if that scenario is appealing, this ixpand device will do the job it seems.
For me personally, I would much rather have a wi-fi based hub that can allow me to access any USB or SD device. So much cheaper when you can add your own storage.
and... just I despise the idea of a dongle hanging off the side of my iPad for any reason for any amount of time. That design is so unfortunate. I think it just highlights the silly stubborn nature of how Apple have refused to add a micro SD slot.
If I really had to plug something in, I would at least want something like the Leef iBridge that is designed to stay out of the way.
@Hmtx
You're right, the reason we have to use these things is because of the lack of a micro SD slot !
Saying that, the form factor of the iXpand doesn't perturb me, the touching of the contacts on the lightning connector, I'm less keen on.
@Hmtx @Igneous1 The IXpand is certainly clunky, and I totally agree that to muck about with the connector is worrisome, plus it's cumbersome with the iPad cases that I use. The main thing is that it's quick and works for what I need: plug it in, move files, and unplug it. The whole thing with Apple and limited storage is baffeling to me, so I sadly accept it and find work arounds.
