SOLVED! - Upgraded to new iPad, how to restore Gadget presets? (or any app data)

edited December 2015 in General App Discussion

New iPad Pro, I backed up my old Air's apps to iTunes, and backed up all the files I could access in Gadget's sandbox through iExplorer, restored to the new Pro, and dropped all the project files and imported wav files back in through iExplorer.

However, none of my synth's presets are there. Is there anyway to restore them?

For that matter, what is the best practice for getting the state of any app perfectly backed up and transferred to a new device? I am having similar issues across all of my apps.

  • Bump. Also, none of my Gadget midi mappings made it over. Is there anyway using iTunes, iExplorer, or iFunbox to them backed up from the old iPad and restored to the new one?

  • The truth is...there is no easy way and i could bite into my ipad when i think about this huge flaw.Maybe it's (still)possible to access the presets via iFunbox pre iOS 8.3 but not later. There are only two (not very practical) solutions:a complete restore of your old backup on your new device (never tested myself) and:creating a (or more) song(s) where you open a lot of your gadget presets. The songs are still accessible via iFunbox etc.If you want to send a feature request, please do it here (i'll backup this request): https://support.korguser.net/hc/en-us/community/topics/200037165-KORG-Gadget-community

  • Do a restore from your last backup in iTunes. That's the way it's meant to be done. I just upgraded a phone, restored from the last backup of my old phone and everything was there except I had to re-do some of the system settings.

Problem for me starts with:i have not enough space to do a full backup of my 128Gb device (which is also quite packed). And on a new device i prefer to do it manually (even if it takes much longer) as it is"really"a fresh and clean install, also a good chance to get rid of"bloat"that fills my devices over time.I also had it once that a full restore didn't restore everything. As we all know, having an apple device is anything else than"it just works"anymore.I don't trust the system (and ESPECIALLY itunes).I want full controll over the whole process myself.

  • I did a full backup and restore. Almost nothing came over. No Gadget songs, presets, or midi mappings. No Loopy songs or midi mappings. I was able to get songs moved over with iExplorer.

Is a full backup and restore supposed to carry this stuff over?

  • SOLVED! But not for free...

I found a program called iMazing which claims "To our knowledge, we're the only software on the market to allow backup / restore of app data on iOS 9" and guess what? IT WORKS! https://imazing.com $35 but you get 10% off for liking them on FB.

I was able to backup all of my Gadget presets, midi cc maps, (and all my tracks, but you could do that with iTunes/iExplorer/iFunbox too). ALSO I was able to move a boatload of Loopy midi mappings from my old iPad to my new one. DAYS of time have been saved!

You used to be able to restore files like this in iExplorer or iFunbox, in each app's "Library" folder, but iOS 8.4 and newer have locked this down. Somehow iMazing is able to do this in a non-hacked, non-jailbroken way.

  • Nice, thanks for the info.

I actually own iMazing, but after iOS 8.4 they were in the same boat as everyone else in terms of not being able to access app data. Looks like they've found a new workaround, which is good news.

  • Wait, what?! Would this work between iPads? (starting research now...)

Yep. Worked for me, going from iPad Air 2 to iPad Pro. :)

They were in the same boat as the others with not being able to access the full app directories. Actually, iExplorer and iMazing both have "backup explorers" that let you still see the contents of the backed up "Library" folders, but only iMazing lets you restore app data to individual apps from one device to another.

  • Wonder if iFunbox will figure out the same hack and get back into it.

  • I did a backup/restore and all gadget songs copied over to my new iPad for me. Same with any other app I've checked so far. The weird thing was it didn't copy the latest version of most apps over, I had 120 to update after the restore.

I used to use iFunbox way back up until recently when it got a bit out of control and lost it's simplicity and functionality. I am using the Free copytrans Apps (free beta) right now and it is working very well. I would recommend giving it a shot. It is free and I don't see any malware installed.
So, now....I have copytrans manager to edit song info and artwork and this copytrans apps free for patch transfering. They have other tool apps for photos and ibooks? but i don't believe they are free
