Need Advice: Will this work?
Guys, I have a Beringher UCA222 audio interface but when I hook up my guitar to the RCA inputs directly, my signal level going into the iPad is pretty low. I'm trying to figure out if it would benefit for me to get a mini headphone amp like this:
Will this increase my guitar level high enough prior to going into the RCA inputs of my audio interface?
I need something like this as it is extremely portable and cheap at the same time. Thanks in advance.

@Tones4Christ - I don't have a UCA222 and couldn't find any real specifications for it, but from the general description, the RCA inputs are designed for Line level signals (typically 1volt peak to peak). The mini head phone amp should improve the volume, but there may be issues since its output is designed to drive headphones (and at that price probably the cheap piezo headphones) so there may be an impedance miss match. Not sure how clean or what kind of tone quality you'll get out of it.
Yeah, that's probably just going to add to the problem. You need a direct box, an interface with a high-imediance input or any old used (cheap) guitar multi-effects pedal with a line out. You can bypass the pedal and just use the guitar preamp. Look on your local craigslist for something like the Korg Pandora or Zoom anything.
Thanks Ganthofer. Yeah, I thought about that and wondered what would be the best portable cheap way. I hate to have to buy a mixer just to hook up my guitar. The reason I love the UCA is because it gets powered by the iPad already and I don't have to use a powered hub, only a simple unpowered hub. So I'm trying to stay that route. Probably the only other solution would be a mini mixer with pre's but that might be more expensive and probly bulkier too.
Yeah, didn't think about that. So i would hook the effects pedal out of the headphone out of the pedal or the main 1/4 in out?
Will this one work?

@Tones4Christ - first, I don't own and have never personally used a DI box, but have seen them used ( mostly with sound systems/mixers). This one has some confusing info presented, starting with the "Consumer Alert: Most users do not need a license to operate this wireless microphone system. ...." Hopefully that just got appended by mistake. It states for Acoustic/Electric Guitar or line level, but it was not very clear how or what needs to be set to connect the guitar directly, but presumably it can be done. To get line level out, again unclear. I would expect it on the XLR OUT, but there is a little blurb In the product features "Connect to amp's speaker out for line level conversion". And lastly there is a very confusing statement (also in the product features) "9V DC and +48V Phantom Power" which I can only guess means it will run off of the mixer boards +48V phantom power ( or what have you) that you connect the XLR output to.
However, if it does what it states and hints at, then it should work connecting the guitar to the 1/4" "line in", the UCA222 input to the 1/4" "To Speaker" and run off of a n
9 volt battery. But that's just my guess.
Or this one?

It says is a passive DI box so no battery needed. Hosa passive Di box for $28 bucks.
@Tones4Christ - that would appear to be more in line with what you are wanting in my opinion. Again, I haven't personally played with any DI boxes, but from my electrical/electronic theory, it should be a good match for your needs.
One note of caution. Quality of the internal transformer and shielding can greatly affect the quality (low noise) of the output. So if there are noise problems, make sure it is not close to any power lines/cords. Usually turning it 90 degrees ( maybe in the x/y axis or maybe in the x/z or Y/z ) will indicate external issues if the sound/noise changes.
Just sold a similar box for $10 on craigslist! Sorry mang!
And yes, that oughta do it. But before you buy it consider alternative iOS interfaces with dedicated guitar inputs and or a little box like the Pandora. Some can be had for not much more scratch and offer more feature wise.
Thanks! I basically just want to make sure I'm getting a good signal strong enough into my UCA222 so all I would need is a 1/4 in cable with RCA jack on the other end. I was thinking of saving cash for a sonic port vx but if I can save going this route then I can use some cash to buy volcano and timeless...
@Tones4Christ - I could be wrong here, but the 1/4 inch Out on the Hosa DI is just a pass thru (at least what I've typically seen) to connect to an Amp or other Hi-z input. I believe you will need an XLR to RCA adapter of some sort, as that is where the Line leve signal is going to come out. typically the guitar is plugged into the 1/4 inch input and the XLR out is connected to a Mixer/PA/LineLevel input.

Oh thanks for the tip. I was really thinking of the HOSA one as I saw it on amazon for $20 bucks. Will see.
