Old Kit ...
While we witness the steady increase in value of original kit .... with the re introduction of all the (new !!!?? ) analogue gear, will the value of old kit continue to rise, level off or drop ? i guess there will always be the collectors who'll pay top $ for rare or pristine condition examples but i guess the market in general will become smaller as the new analogue gear becomes available to those that actually want it for the "sound"
And ... your old synths and drum machines ... do you still use them or integrate them with your new kit/ipad? or are they banished to the attic/ebay ?
Comments
The classic analog gear will continue to increase in value as it always has. All the newer gear is cool. But mostly limited in many ways.
Actual classic physical kit has a cachet all of its own. People who just want the sound may well opt for more modern convenient alternatives, be it soft synths or remade versions. Of course, what is "classic" and what is just old tat is often in the eye of the beholder - supply and demand!
Most of the "classic" gear I had is worth at least 10x what I sold it for 20 years ago...
But now I'm iPad based. Its way more convenient and cheaper than hardware.
i still weep every time i think about the mint Juno 60 i sold to (part) fund the purchase of a Roland XP10 which now collects dust in the attic. i have lots of 'classic' kit that i cling on to knowing that its never going to be used again ... just like i thought ... with the Juno 60
you are correct. recently, ive been tinkering with hardware again and after using the ipad for the last couple of years you forget about the messing about with patching, cables, separate plug sockets , extension leads etc etc
however, it can still be a pain getting the instruments to talk to each other on ipad
Old gear sits there for years, then when you take it down to use or sell, fails. My Korg Poly800 is dead. It wasn’t before, last time I switched it on in the late ’90s, but since I took it out of the attic a few weeks ago, I find it’s now dead.
Anything with a lithium battery in it probably now doesn’t work (I checked my three Oberheim Matrix 1000 rack synths a couple of years ago, but now I have some lithium coin cell holders to solder into them one day, to facilitate changing easier).
YEP ! recently tried a Boss SE50 i hadnt used for years ...it wouldnt play nice ! ordered a cell from fleabay .... still to fit it in the unit .... maybe next year
Man should have a project Do you have a shed?
I sold a fender silver faced something or other in 1989 for $100 and a box of Betamax B horror films because I'd just gotten my first sampler.
I don't think old gear will go down in value. I think your basic assumption is correct (newer , more solid gear for cheaper means more people can/will opt for that) but it misses a key variable: more people. Meaning the relative supply:demand probably won't change all that much. Plus, mojo really is a thing; even if it's only in the mind.
I still use lots of my old gear but I did just sell a bunch of stuff I hadn't been using. Just got a beatstep pro with the proceeds and am in line for a mother-32.
Happy Christmas
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 indeed! Got a little Xmas scratch too. Put that aside towards an Air 3. iPad 3 to air 3 oughta feel pretty good. Then my 3 might replace the BSP with Modstep, midiSteps and midiSequencer. Though I'll probably drum up an excuse for needing the BSP's extra CV IO for the mother-32.
i do have a shed ... doesn't every real bloke ??
how about this shed ?
In the last sonic talk, Nick Batt mentioned he had just had 3 mother-32s delivered for review (they sent 3 so he could show off the sexy 3-way euro rack) and he did mention in passing that he wasn't impressed with the filter on it. Seeing as the filter is one of main features of a Moog, that seemed a bit disappointing. You may want to wait for his review before pulling the trigger on that one..
Cheers @Jocphone. I spent a little time with it yesterday and was pretty stoked on it. Sounds like I have about a month anyway so I'll definitely check it out first. I'm also pretty sweet on the Dreadbox Erebus (which I haven't had a chance to mess with) as an alternate to the m32.
I just tried to find the clip but couldn't so I will have to rely on my memory and I think he said that when you raised the resonance on the filter it lost all the bottom end. So something to look out for. His review should be out sometime in January so I'm sure he will explain it a lot better then. And yeah I've heard good things about he Erebus, Sonic Talk did a review of that too.
Personally I keep getting GAS lately over the Roland system-1m. I know it's not analog but there is something that keeps me going back to find videos about it, not even sure why.
And then, at the other end of the scale, I was watching the video about the new firmware for the Prophet 12, with it's FM implementation. Now that sounds good!
Bugger, that reminds me. I must dig out my vintage cameras and check the foam hasn’t disintegrated on the focusing screen (the Mamiya C330 does that) and check the batteries aren’t leaking in the Bronica ETRSi and all the rangefinders I managed to sneak past the wife (because they all look the same — must always buy gear that looks similar to what you’ve already got).
This is exactly my problem with the iPad Pro....
When I had a studio, that's why I had a lot of rack gear.
The wonders of iOS, as my wife never asks why I have so many music apps.
@Jocphone yep. It was Nik's video that started my Erebus drooling.
Definitely interested in that resonance thing as that would sorta remove Moog kicks from the possibilities palette.
