Question for iPad Pro/Auria Pro users

To what extent Does the iPad pro with 4gigs of ram help alleviate low memory problems in Auria Pro.lm on iPad Air 9.1 and I still get low memory warnings only using a few apps. Thanks for any advice.

  • Can't speak of iPad pro but be aware that any midi tracks in (pro) sessions will reduce the latency drastically from non pro. This causes low memory after only a few plugins depending what type) even on air 2.

  • I have an iPad Pro. My old iPad 4 is way behind on computing power and specs in general so can't properly compare to your set-up.

I love Auria Pro, and don't have any problems with it. Then again, I'm used to freezing tracks, so I do that habitually since before I started using Auria Pro. Also, as @skoptic points out, if you use a midi track in your song, the latency setting is 512 at the highest, which is less than 4096.

If you freeze (or bounce in place) you can up the latency setting though. I generally have one miditrack at the time that I'm working on, if I'm not doing drums, in which case I have had 8 (midi) tracks going, using Lyra samples (as I've noticed no more than 1 track can trigger Drumagog on the midi note alone at the time, the others doesn't actually trigger on the midi note alone), all 8 tracks loading Drumagog + other (FF) effects, without problems/issues/warnings.

When I'm working with non-drum tracks I work on a track, freeze, move on to next, freeze etc. Freezing is almost instantaneous so I don't see this as a burden, and it keeps my CPU level really low. There is quite likely more advanced users out there though, so you should probably wait for more replies.

  • Yup, takes some manual memory management. But it's doable. Freezing is just a matter of course now, once I am not messing with a track, it gets frozen. You really do have to watch that CPU meter, as some of the plugins, as fabulous as they are, can, with particular setups, eat memory and CPU alive. I would say that the Pro should be better.

I think you meant CPU usage. Latency settings have no effect on memory.

  • I think the ipad pro should be on the very safe side.I'm on Air 2 since over a year and had not one low memory warning anymore in auria. And i had a lot of them before (on mini 2).Often enough (with a not too demanding song running) i even have safari open or something else now.

I find that the plugins and audio tracks all work nicely (Air1 and then I upgraded to Air2). Never needed to freeze tracks doing 14 tracks projects. All good really.

But I do find in AP that Twin2 kills CPU very quickly. It's a little annoying to be honest. You only need one or two Twin2 instances for this to happen. I need to better understand what it is in the presets that are making this happen, then make my own patches that are much lighter on CPU.

Freezing is the work around of course. (I assume that you don't build up storage problems by constantly freezing and unfreezing?).

Lyra seems much better on CPU usage.

  • I've asked FabFilter about the CPU usage in Twin2, and here's what they said:

"Twin 2 is actually a very deep synth. It's virtual analog, and basically allows you to modulate anything with anything. There are up to 32 voices, and each voice has a separate set of filters so you can modulate them with the per-voice envelope generators. So you can easily have a LOT of oscillating and filtering going on. And our oscillators and filters aren't the cheapest because we optimized for sound, not for efficiency. We developed it on PC/Mac hardware of course and obviously the iPad is more limited, especially regarding cache/memory access."

Also, they mentioned that the oscillator sync mode uses more CPU, so if it's not needed for a preset, disabling it would help. Reducing the polyphony setting will also help a lot.

  • Right. Thanks @WaveMachineLabs

    So:

    • number of voices
    • Oscillator sync mode (gotta look for that one!)

Will try that for making things a bit lighter.

It does sound bloody good... I'll give them that :)

Truth be told, One and Twin were reason enough to pay the full upgrade for AP (had worked with em already as VST) then there's Lyra, then there's AP all by itself without any onboard instruments...kinda feels still like I owe @WaveMachineLabs some more $...

  • What @Littlewoodg said, but with a Swedish accent.

Actually I went quite quickly past One at first, but after I got all the other FabFilter plug-ins I'm finding One to be little Lean Mean Fighting Machine. :)

Yep pretty badass, that little One!
Hey @Matt_Fletcher_2000, thanks for probing the issue, a good reminder for me on working with the givens of our platform...of all the big boy synth ports to iOS, I think Twin 2 is the most modern and probably the most demanding

  • Is there an ability to share patches with the AP synths?

  • Thanks for all the responses! However my decision whether to purchase an iPad Pro has become moot because upon visiting my daughters and son in law for the holidays they just gave me a shiny new 128 gig iPad Pro for Christmas.I'm a lucky guy and thankful for a wonderful family!

  • Maybe you can answer the question then. How is AP on the pro? Noticeably better?

  • Yes everything seems smoother on iPad Pro.I haven't had time to do to much testing but I just tried StepPolyArp controlling Animoog and Twin2 with RockDrumMachine all synced and playing live into AuriaPro while I'm playing Isem through Saturn on another track. No problems and also Isem loads much faster now.

  • Thanks. Will probably get one next week

First, nice work on raising your kid! I gotta up my game.

Second, can you tell us what you upgraded from?

  • I upgraded from a IpadAir 128 gigs on iOS 9.1
