Korg Module vs. iM1 for Piano Sounds

So we find ourselves once again on the last day of a Korg holiday sale and I'm being tempted by the $19.99 price tag on Module. I already have iM1, as well as iGrand and iElectric. The main dilemma here is I really like using Gadget so I'm wondering if Module really has that much more to offer than the similar sounds that can be found in iM1? This is not for live performance or anything. Just a hobbyist who likes to mess around with this stuff as much as anybody here and likes Piano/keyboard type sounds. I realize Module is sample-based whereas iM1 is synthesized but the latter sounds pretty good to me with the types of sounds that Module specializes in. I can't say it sounds as good is iGrand and iElectric though, which I do have, and which probably would compare well to Module.

So I'm just not certain if $19.99 and a gigabyte of space on my iPad is worth it. I know this is yet another one of those completely subjective decisions but I'm still wondering if anybody else has faced this dilemma and found themselves to be completely satisfied with the similar sounds that are included in iM1?

Comments

  • I'm in exactly the same position. Bit I think I'm going to let Module go this time, there's really very little space on my iPad and I like iGrand just fine.

  • Even when the M1 came out, I was not a big fan of its piano sound, and to me, Module sounds much better and more realistic than the iM1.

I would go with Module. Its sounds are much deeper and more realistic than iM1 and it is one of my go-to pianos for live playing. However some sounds in iM1 are quite nice and cut through a mix pretty well. If you want realistic pianos nothing comes close to Module with the Ivory in-app. But even without the in-app purchases the stock pianos are quite good.

  • If you ever wish you had ilectric or iGrand inside Gadget, get Module. I couldn't live without those real-ish electric piano sounds. Nothing in iM-1 comes close.

  • I have module, ielectric, igrand and iM1.
Module beats them all hands down, you won't need any other piano or organ apps ever again (except Galileo for the real time drawbars and the Doors Vox continental)
It's not without its quirks though, I can assign my mod wheel to control the Leslie within Gadget, but not standalone. Anyone found a solution?

  • Thanks for the opinions folks. I ended up passing this time although it was very close! I'll just rely on either iM1 or sampled sounds (from iGrand and iElectric) for now. But if I continue to use Gadget so regularly I may very well give in next time there is a sale!

Not that they are amazing but there are piano sounds in gadget already in the pcm synth (not remembering the city right now, sorry!). They sound ok to my ears as long as you're not performing a piano concerto at Carnegie hall... In which case your iPad probably wouldn't be doing that anyway. ;-)

Module will still be there when you're ready. I use a number of whatever-feels-right at the moment, but I've never opened Module and thought shoulda never bought this. Not once.

  • how do you guys feel about nonlocality

Truer words have never been spoken. I think "Whatever feels right" is pretty much how I always start. The App Store is my oyster.
