2016: TRENDS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN MUSIC APPS ?

  1. I would like to see less IPAD only apps.
  • If I love an app, I love an app and want to play with it and diddle. That includes when I am not able to use my IPad. Also, many apps that are IPad only, I would like to just have them as MIDI controllers using the IPhone. Case and point, Chordion.
  1. Mandatory Audiobus inclusion of programming. (not serious, but really hopeful)
(I am assuming that the guys at Audiobus sub-contract out for Audiobus implementation for other app company/developers. It is an easy sell- massive increase in app sales if they are on Audiobus)

  2. Apps being thoroughly Beta tested and vetted. The trend lately that seems to be increasing in which an app comes out, I buy it. Then I sit with my thumb in the wind via multiple updates and patronizing until finally the app is ready for prime time. Usually, weeks after I actually bought it. Not cool. Some people buy apps less frequently than others. So a $10 purchase that is useless may be really frustrating for some people.

Generally speaking, what would you like to see in the music app world in 2016? What did I miss?

  • iOS File-Picker (ie. iCloud Drive) support for import/export/backup of files generated by an application.

This should already be the standard way to import/export files to and from an application as more and more 'file-manager apps' already act as File-Providers making the stored files accessible to all apps supporting the standard iOS File-Picker/iCloudDrive.

  • More "pro" apps! Really tired of player versions! In the past developers said iOS devices have not enough cpu etc..... well, now where are all the full synths apps now? A full blown sampler like Kontakt with great libraries?
There is one DAW which fits the bill (maybe) called Auria Pro.
Then a lot iOS apps still doesn´t use the touch screen like they could. XY movements for modulation.... should be standard today. There are a lot more shortcomings which i thought would be better in a few months, years....mmhhhh.... but it doesn´t change at all.
IOS can be a really great experience but it´s evolving so slow. Developers need a lot time to catch up with new features like screen size, OS updates, 3d touch and in general the fast yearly changes. This platform makes since years always 2 step forward, 1 1/2 back etc.
I would like to see that this change.
I think mobile devices and touch input is a big part of the future, especially for the younger generations which grows up with smartphones, phablets, tablets whatever.... don´t read further if you love apple and monopols...
For me it goes a bit like in "1984" direction if it goes on.
Brainwashed sheeps (dramatized) puting a cable into their lightning port in their neck and are catched in a walled garden called brain store ;)

  • Manuals and video guides available on the release date for every music app.

  • Another vote from me for more iPhone apps. As much as I love using the iPad stuff, I just have my phone with me more often these days.

I'd like to see more "groovebox" type apps myself. Things like Figure, iKaossilator, TriqTraq, etc. There's enough synths and drum machine already :)

App manufacturers — stop using Dropbox only. Let me use whichever cloud service I have space on. Or let me use my WD My Cloud or Seagate Personal Cloud devices. Dropbox filled itself up all by itself without my intervention within the first weeks of installation, many years ago, and has been useless ever since. I ignore it. iCloud costs too much and they keep wanting money. I do have cloud space on other services that don’t cost me money (for a year or so, anyway — one day they too will die). Let me change to whichever cloud space I elect.

  • Of course i forgot also.... yes, more iPhone versions. Since there a lot more iPhones out there and you can catch great sound outside an app like borderlands or samplr f.e. would need an iPhone version.
NanoStudio, Mitosynth, ThumbJam shows that with a clever UI design you could do any iPad app on an iPhone as well. More switching would be the price but it´s O.K. for me. Damn, it´s the only "real" mobile music ;)
Waiting since years for a full Sunrizer on iPhone...... or more virsyn synths. No chance.

  • More integration between apps - Link was a good step in this direction, and AU promises it but it needs more apps (and particularly DAWs) to implement it. I like having different playing surface options too.

  • More widespread implementation of Ableton Link

State saving of apps when they're hosted inside another app

  • More synth and fx apps adding AU support and more apps adding AU hosting. The midiSTEPs iSEM combo is a beautiful thing.

If Tabletop or Gadget or both added AU hosting, even now with just the iSEM AU that would be huge for me.

  • Hi!
Always include - Link, audiobus AND state saving! Audio copy/paste, midi in & out.
User preset/banks saving & sharing, eg by Mail app, between devices
Always let me type in a tempo! (As opposed to using a really imprecise slider)
Also midi map overlays when pressing a button to see how midi CCs are mapped & an easy way to change, save & share them.
Easy way to manage samples/libraries, eg there's a lot of apps that take lots of space, but I never use their libraries!

Many thanks for reading, wishing you all the best! o:)

Good ones already listed. I'd just add.....

...........Along with the thorough beta testing mentioned above, maybe app developers being on top of ios software updates, and having a quick update/fix ASAP so the apps aren't DOA upon new ios releases, and un use-able.

.............As with some talk in other threads, about the sustainability of Apps for the developers. Possibly a trend to charge for "some" updates/new features.

..............I'm with most everyone, I don't have a lot of money laying around at home, two kids, private school. Bills and more bills. I just want to be able to count on/rely on the solid apps that I have now being there in the future. If I need to pony up some more $$ for a hefty upgrade, or new features to feed the developer, and make it worth their while to upgrade their app, I'm all for that. I'm also all for the free upgrades as well, cuz they are my favorite!

..............A new trend for one app developer in general: For Positive Grid to hold off on coming out with any new apps or products for at least a good 48 hours. And fix and Perfect the apps they have out floating around now. Which are among my favorites to use for sure. Most of em seem to work pretty well for me ATM, I haven't upgraded to the latest Bias FX yet. Read too many horror stories on FB about it not working well. But, I still can't get much use-able out of Final Touch, and a lot of people are having trouble with Bias FX and Amps on FB.

  • Kind of interesting that the list has some very common denominators.

All of which seem to hearken back to customer service and respect.

So many purchases are of good faith on our end, and it seems that is not reciprocated by a few.

Also, the idea that a person should have more flexibility in HOW HE OR SHE used the app. Stop pigeon holing customers into using the app the way "the developer envisioned the app" being used.

The outright abandonment of apps by developers is also not acceptable. Perhaps there can be some program by which incentives for developers to "reactivate or revive" apps that have been abandoned allowing developers to make more if they use a clunker to fix up for a new re-imagined purpose.

Money and costs in relation to value also seems to be an issue. The prices are fair on most apps. Unless the upgrade prices are not. That pretty well is easy to understand and founded in fairness. The minute things are not fair, it is obvious to most of us. Thank heavens for the online music app communities.

Well, I appreciate everything so far and look forward to reading more ideas and wishes for the direction for IOS music apps.

  • Soundfont editors! Many other great ideas presented already.

  • A kind like little Reaktor thing. It would be interesting to hava tool on an iPad Pro f.e. where i could draw my keys, knobs, sliders...whatever with the pencil :)
In theory there are so much things possible. There are gaming apps where you can create your own levels.... just give me that for a synth!

Added a tad of emphasis to your excellent summation.

Or at least more folks realizing the absolutely positive sales and marketing value of this rather than thinking 'we'll get to them later' isn't going to hurt sales/uptake/word of mouth.

Never more true now with Link! I would love it if AB just had a tempo field and with quick x2 and /2 buttons.

  • More apps being updated with Link and AU support.

    OMG

With Air2 it is impossible to lock in a 125 without feeling like I have Parkinsons

  • An app manufacturer should make a voice-controlled numeric interface, operated by loud swearing.

Absolutely- why on earth not. They spend so much time developing an app- in relative terms it would take no time at all to knock up a manual/ video. Then I could see what I am buying...... and would not have to spend half a day fiddling, tapping, dragging and generally experimenting until it starts to fall in to place........ If it ever does. Does this not trouble others as well? Or is it all very intuitive or something?

  • edited December 2015

    -no more small fiddly controls
-all synth apps with enough controls to fill the screen have a full screen option as 'midi keyboard mode'(or something)
-clear warning of limitations on minimum required hardware/iOS(I have a couple apps now that are supposed to run on an ipad 2/mini, but....they do not run well and some can't make use of all the app's features). It's nice to be able to purchase and run these apps but not with surprising sacrifices.
-always require confirmation on deletion of preset or clearing of current setup
    -keep up the good work!

  • ACP, Sample import and export, midi in and midi out, ableton live on the iPad, monome on the iPad,

  • oh almost forgot....... panning, panning for all apps that categorize themselves as music apps.

  • Custom skins!
There are some skins out there for some synths on my mac which works much (and looks) better than the originals.
Not sure if such things would be ever possible due to iOS.
So in general i hope iOS will be more "open". But that´s my wish since i used it the first time :#

  • Apps should not be dependent on iTunes for file management. All apps should be able to access cloud storage for saving and loading all file types.
