Beathawk and its IAP's
Right, so Beathawk has been on sale for a while, but that sale is about to expire. I got the app, as I currently live under the illusion I am financially independent or something. Now, before I come to my financial senses I was wondering if the IAP's in Beathawk are good, and which ones are worth going for, whilst they are still on 50% off. Opinions?
I mainly create what some call "Dark Ambient" stuff, when I'm not trying to compile the type of metal (Deathcore) I actually listen to. I do love pretty much all types of music though, and listening to the audio clips/examples for the Beathawk IAP's I sit there and nod my head thinking it sounds great...but I don't know if that is due to them having put an amazing time into creating them that good, OR if they are all loops (which is good in some ways, but quite restrictive in other ways when it comes to creativity and what I can add to it). Then again, if they are good I might as well get them when they are 50% off, than later when they are not on sale...?

@hellquist I like Beathawk. And I believe the devs are still at work and more good things are coming very soon (whatever that means in the software world). I find it creative, quirky (mostly in a good way) and that it provides a different way of getting things done creatively to most of the options out there.
I like the packs but favor the instruments that can be played in different tones spread out on the keyboard. I am also in favor of the fact that you can import your own loops/noise/lines whatever.
What should you buy? I dunno. As I said, I like what I have, but particularly like the Choirs, Electric piano, Acoustic Grand, but also like the Disco, Funk, Atlanta Urban, Urban Factory packs amongst others. Not excited World Percussion and the Talk Vox, but then that's just me.
@hellquist
@JohnnyGoodyear showed me the way on this one, and after trying it out I got very very enthusiastic and remain so: UVI has been around a while, and is known for their sound wares, and their audio quality is very high.
All the sound packs contain construction kits of single hits, and instrument presets as well, along with loops and phrases. The loop thing isn't going to hold you back because they can be cut into little pieces in-app...as you might have guessed from our Sunvox XI and OGG libraries conversation, I acquired pretty much every pack available for Beathawk and I'm glad I did. I do tend to go dark, ambient and/or beat driven, and I like having access to stuff that fits with that, but I also really like to crash things into each other that dont necessarily belong
Hehe, aye, was that discussion that triggered this.
I too like to crash things together too, and throw in the unexpected. However...as much as I love the sample songs for both the Funk pack and the Brass Beats, I have no idea when I will ever use them. I am not all talentless when it comes to playing funky guitar myself, so in theory I guess I could use them for something like that...but I haven't done anything like that on my iPad. Regardless, I have now bought them, and they are downloading as we speak, along with the Choirs and the Trip Hop libraries.
@hellquist
No such thing as too much funk, or too much brass
Those happen to be packs that are represented by at least one pad in any 16 I build, also Scratch, Talk Vox, and Choirs, all fun to pitch across the keys...
Girls and @Littlewoodg aint nuthin' but trouble.
Here I am dismissing Talk Vox and someone says, na-ah, pitch them across the keys baby...
Off to ruin my posture all over again...
@JohnnyGoodyear
Not the first time I've been called a pain in the neck, an honor in this case.
I like the Mello pack it's real good and can be used in a lot of different styles ; no loops just instrument sounds to play on the keys ..
Dude...that's the only one I haven't got (until I read your post)
Cool hope you like it . I like the sounds a lot
I can't say I've really given the Mello much of a shot on BH, but that's because I have the 50th anniversary Mellotronics M3 and while I admire it as a concept I've never actually found a use for the thing AND it's 200 +MB. Welcome other folks views, as ever.
I'm buying the whole set...
Hi guys,
For the first time I have perfect use of Beathawk by re-downloading it.
I use Modstep, the base reference note is C1 for Step Sequencer, use Piano Roll to design patterns, and use Step Sequencer's velocity to control individual pad.
It is wonderful to control quality sounds from Beathawk to bring joys.
Try it, it is awesome!
I will have more IAP purchase today with Beathawk cart. You know it is hard to bring IAA drum app to Modstep, there are many variety reasons, but Beathawk just sit in IAA slot so well and simple.
Hmmm. You've certainly got me thinking...
Ya, if only playing Beathawk, I wouldn't.
It shines on Modstep! So happy when fingering Beathawk sound on Modstep. The controlling is wonderful.
Beathawk is amazing in Modstep...It'll be even more so when Beathawk is no longer midi-promiscuous after update...
Cause and effect. Was pretty certain I was going to leave Modstep to you boffins, but both of you saying that BH is essentially better when force-multiplied (in some boffin-ey way) by MS makes me feel fate is banging at me with the inevitable stick.
Might just pretend to be a tough guy and wait for the next update. Might.
@JohnnyGoodyear ,
Quite like Trip Hop pack, just added 808. BeatHawk has no midi CC for the sample pitch,
No idea what is the unknown from your MS experience.
How do you get around or solve the Omni MIDI?
Each pad is assigned to a midi channel....can you have other synths on other channels or you can only play BH?
...use step sequencer velocity for individual pads?...what does that do?
Don't have Modstep yet....
Ya, send omni. In Modstep, I select only channel one. I have not done any test joining with other apps. but I think it should be fine.
One more.
@Kaikoo @soundklinik
Any midi channel sent at the same time, by anything in device, will be received by Beathawk. This was true before Modstep went live, there aren't any sequencers that can focus BHs MIDI promiscuity. In other words Beathawk can't be sequenced alongside other instruments unless you want Beathawk to play the same notes as the other instrument too...
BH requires the addition of midi channel selectivity to play alongside other instruments, and Bastien at UVI had said this is coming...
I've been waiting/watching for this update since I tried to sequence BH alongside other instruments in Genome (whose MIDI implementation is actually still ahead of MS)
Meanwhile, Beathawk, with its present feature set (load entire kits on one pad/channel x 16 pad/channels, stem export per channel, song mode etc) is all by itself a big f&@king deal...and sequencing it by itself with anything (MTS, Genome, and now AP, MS) is kickass, without a doubt!
BTW @JohnnyGoodyear I figured out what that little keyboard icon is, in BH, that appears occasionally in the bottom right of the sample editor window: some loops when loaded can be auto sliced (at the transients) across the pitch keys. If you select the piano icon the assigned pad only plays one slice of the loop, and all slices are assigned to their own keys on the pitch keyboard. Deselect the piano and the pad plays the loop entire. The loops that do this are the ones with the infinity symbol, but not all of these, beats I think mainly. Curious now about how this works with user loaded loops...will report
Some other BH masters I'm sure knew all about this one!
Wait! That'd mean...ooohh...really...wow...I have to do some testing now!
Ya, waiting the update for months now.
@Littlewoodg , Bhawk is fine with other synth app inside Modstep, because all apps listen and receive from Modstep's command. There is no difficulty to fiddle around.
'Send Omni' words is just misleading, it actually letting other app to control it; should actually call it 'midi in'.
I think we are saying the same thing: Beathawk will play all MIDI note info that is flowing to any channel in device, no matter what channel it's sent on, Beathawk will trigger those notes along with the ones you want it to play.
Did not know that department. Grey here in Austin this morning and I suddenly find myself on an Oscilab jag, but will take a careful look at this new infinity business later on in the slow day...
Ya, still glitch with other synth inside Modstep, no idea! Why it is so hard for Beathawk midi channel implementation?
Curious how you'd rate the horns (Brass Beats) sound Pack? Got a few more Xmas dollars yelling in my ear
Happy New Year to you Sir.
The brass is good, but that feels a bit like saying I like franks. Which I do. Despite everything.
To me it's a very old school collection. I tend to shy away from packs of brass as however cool that sax lick is once you've used it you may not use it again and even then you'll have to walk around waiting for the other horn to drop and hear the same lick in someone else's tune etc.
However, this has a boatload of hits and, along with the usual, a lot of lower/baritone/ barroom samples all of which I like. For all of that I haven't actually used any of them in a piece yet, but mostly -probably- because I don't really know how. An area where my general lack of experience (at scoring brass) really shouts. I suspect I just need to get amongst it, and maybe I will at that.
As for buying it: Why certainly It's what The Santa would have wanted.
Why thank you, and happy new year to you and all the other GoodYears I really appreciate an informed sneak peak under the hood. Lower/baritone/barroom is just what my other virtual horn sections are lacking, soooo ... Yeah. Just what Santa would have wanted
