A New Year, but still on ios7. Anyone else?

My most recent iPad is an Air. I use it, along with an ipad3, for professional, live music making. I got my set up doing most of what is needed, or work around what doesn't. I resolved to stop buying apps and learn the ones I have. And keep my ios where it is so that I know stuff is going to work. Some of the things I read about the transition to 8 spooked me, and I didn't want to have downtime figuring things out. But now 9 is out and new apps are coming along, or older ones nicely improved.

I'm thinking of moving to 9 on the Air and leaving the 3 where it is. Or leave everything as it is and wait for the next generation of iPad Pro. Hmm... I'm sure others are having this dilemma.

(Oh, and I tried out a Pro at the Apple store and just used the pencil to draw stuff. I have zero drawing skills but it was fun!).

  • I held out on iOS 7.0.2 until about 2 weeks ago... And I'm on ipad4. I was very reluctant to do so cause everything worked well. But the new apps with added Link support (requiring versions above 7) made me want to upgrade.
Overall I have no regrets - everything seems to be working the same as before - but I have not tested every single app yet.

  • I recently upgraded to an iPad Pro with ios 9.whatever it is, no regrets!

  • Yes - definitely. Still on 7.1.2 and NOT moving my workhorse machine (an iPad mini 2 64GB) from 7.1.2 any time soon. I have iPads on 8.4, 9.1 as well, and 7.1.2 is STILL the most stable IME and IMO for music production.

I went from 7.1.2 to 8.4 at the very last moment when 9 came out and it was going to disappear. Had no problems at all. I'm on the verge of going to the latest 9.x , as I have not heard much grumbling. I am always one of the holdouts...

  • It depends, if you are perfectly happy with what you have now, it's working with zero issues, need a stable set up for things like live playing or something and you have no interest in the new things that have come out there is no real hurry to update as iOS 9 it's certainly better than iOS 8 and every update it's bringing more stability but it's not as stable as 7.1.2 was although not by much now. In iOS 7 there is no Audio Units, no ableton link, No AB remote, no MIDI over Bluetooth, and a ton of new apps that require iOS 8 and up.

    Bing bang boom.

  • Agreed - I am thankful to be able to use the other facilities and apps on 8 and 9 where i have it. Stability and general usability overall is the main issue for me though which is why I still have 7.1.2 on other iPads.

  • Hi @MarkR. I'm still on ios 7 with 60 odd updates waiting.. But I'm still using a lil ol iPad2 so updating to 9 may cause problems.. I like the way things are going with ios and I'd like to be on 9 but I can cope with what I have, I know what works an what doesn't.. Just recently bought Cyclop, no issues there. Hopefully this year I'll get iPad pro.. Be interesting to see what's next..Pro2 maybe ?

Yeah, there are some nice things available using 9, but right now I can't justify spending a grand for a Pro. Maybe next year...

  • With an iPad 2 I would advise to watch out to update to iOS 9. This version seems to considerable slow down the iPad 2.

thank you for this. just in time as i was considering updating. I am at 8.4 and pretty happy.
Will be upgrading my ipad today though I think. :)

  • If it ain't broke........

  • I genuinely have no clue why anyone would wish to remain on iOS7 at this point.

  • I'm on 8.4 on both my Air 2's and have no stability issues as some reported above. If I were you I'd buy a second hand Air 2 with latest and greatest, test your set up for a few weeks then decide what to do. You can still sell on the test iPad which shouldn't set you back more than $30 which shouldn't be too high a price to pay if you're using this gear professionally. Or maybe you should keep it for a multi device link-enabled rig?!

  • My iPad 2 and iPod Touch 5G will probably stay on iOS v7, because subsequent versions are said to make them sluggish. Air 1 will go to v9 soon.

Don't! Unless your Air is on iOS7 and want to upgrade for few new apps and Link. Today I bought a 128g version of Air and selling my old 16g . Mine had 8.1.4 version and the one I bought has 9.1 :'(

On simple launching the same apps ,side by side ,the 8.1.4 was faster. Then I launched every app I could within AB and found out that I had few glitches on ios 8 and much more on ios 9.

To clarify things ,it isn't terrible difference but somewhat noticable

A clue? Heck, I gave a full reason. ;) I work every week in a live context with my rig and need it to be predictable and to behave. Though I will admit that on my Air at least I probably should've gone to 8.1.4 while it was available.

One of the overlooked things about ios music apps is that even if an older version doesn't have all the latest stuff it still is perfectly good at doing what it did when it came out. The ones I most like to use (Sunrizer, Thor, Magellan, DrumJam, ThumbJam, Addictive, LoopyHD, bs-16i, Impaktor, etc.) remain awesome as they are.
