TSTR Video..2016, Me, Health And The Rise Of Vinyl

Comments

  • Don't we all miss John Peel?
    Happy new year.

  • Great to hear from you Doug

  • Never gave up my vinyl. Still listen to it on a Technics knock off, Gemini, with a good cartridge.

Focus on your health in the new year, please.

    Happy New year, Doug!
Still got my vinyl too but not much room for my record deck in my little studio room. However, I must admit to feeling like making some room for a bit of nostalgic listening after watching your video!

All the best but please don't overdo things and take your time with stuff :)

PS: I also miss John Peel. I used to love his shows and can still remember when he first played Tyrannosaurus Rex! :)

  • Happy New Year to you, Doug, and may you get real well again, soon. I enjoyed your video.
All the best and thanks for all your contributions, no worries about future things now! Enjoy.

  • Happy New Year Doug. You know that before I moved to Cyprus, i recorded all of my records into MP3 going through a Realistic DJ mixer into my Laptop. I found that the quality of Vinyl sounded better(fidelity) was better than CD when it was played on my iPod Classic. Clicks & all. I tried cleaning them up with software, but it took away the glow & warm sound from them. The thing is, now you cannot get, or download them anymore. All my Acid House/Chicago Trax/ Greensleeves Label collection/ Dennis Brown/ Gregory Issacs/ etc, are gone forever(almost). You can download some, but the quality is pants. I'm so glad I backed up them all, & the annoying thing they are now worth a mint in good condition. When I play them from the hard drive, they bring back sweet memories.

  • Just picked up 95 LP's from a private sale in Truro for £100

  • Good deal! I still have a small lp collection of records I couldn't bear to part with, even though I don't really have anything to play them on now. Pride of place are my Rick Wakeman collection, signed by the man himself. Anyway - take it easy and I hope your health issues will be all soon as soon as possible.

  • Vinyl is prominent here

Glad to see you and to hear you, Mr. Doug.

Not only the vinyl itself, but the artwork as well. "In the Court of the Crimson King" or "Physical Graffity" (among others) aren't the same piece of art on CD.

    Fabulous

  • Alas, my vinyl collection went away around 1989. It's not quite the same, but I do enjoy Elephant Candy's Vinyl app. I like how it even breaks your digital album into 2 sides. And my wife is a swing/Victrola enthusiast, so a couple times a year we like to wind up the old Victrola and kick it REALLY old school ;)

    "Life has surface noise."

  • Nice to hear from you Doug!

  • Happy New Year Doug. Wishing you the best of health in 2016. My vinyl collection was nabbed shortly after leaving the military. I do know what you mean about really listening to music with vinyl.

  • On a side note,
Doug if you know anything about mastering for vinyl, that would be a cool future video.
You need to cut out some frequencies from what i understand?!

Mrs. Goodyear bought one too and I sometimes stumble through our local thrift stores where there are endless laundry baskets of LPs. An awful lot of rubbish but the occasional score. We have lunch every month or two and scurry about to old polka tunes and seventies soft-folk covers. Keeps the romance alive etc :)

  • Vinyl may save us all yet

  • Fight the good fight Mister Doug, all any of us can do. That Watson's very adorable by the way (and patient), but doesn't say much for himself does he.....?

  • awesome video and yes - listening to records is way different from listening to cds or mp3s or these things. I also love cassette tapes (some nice scratching with tapes: ). Some months ago there was a post on Synthtopia about Panasonic planning to bring back the fabulous Technics 1200/ 1210. I hope this thing will be good.
Among other things records are great because you can still listen to them in an emergency/ no electricity situation using a needle and paper funnel (if you are willing to sacrifice the Vinyl). This used to fascinate me when I was a kid and it still does. Then there are the great album covers etc. And the surface noise has a very relaxing effect on me.
    Vinyl records are real beauties.
Have fun building your record collection and thanks for the video. Looking forward to more vlogs!

Have you tried some Tango from Finland yet @JohnnyGoodyear? Very romantic stuff!

    Tango from Finland?

    Something new every day...

  • Great vlog Doug - only just got a chance to watch it.

I know exactly what you mean. Vinyl just has that mojo. It also has a lot of memories for a lot of people - partly to do with buying it, where you could listen to it, and how. Very special. Oh, and the surface noise.

Perhaps you could do more videos where you just jam with different (synth) apps and presets. I love those Gadget ones where you just riffed with different Gadgets. The Helsinki one inspired to me to create a whole series of tracks actually!

  • I'd love to hear you playing Animoog and just trying out different patches with different styles of playing.

Maybe even over dubbing some loops with loopy (which you could trigger with a controller)?

  • Cheers Matt, and yeah I will still be doing the synth videos. I just reviewed Sgt Pepper 180g Vinyl Remaster, just one of the best records ever made.

That multitrack recording thing is just a fad, Doug. Like Dubstep. Or iOS Music apps ;)

  • We are so spoilt these days!
