Sounds from Yamaha Synth Book
I discovered the Yamaha Synth Book app a few days ago and have been obsessed with it ever since. For fun I tried to make some music using only sounds from the app. This is one of my very earliest attempts at doing music in Auria (or on the iPad for that matter). I made a lot of mistakes—levels too hot, digital artifacting, fabfilter overdose—but I do think I did prove my point that there are a lot of purty sounds in Yamaha Synth Book.

@Reid Olympic Rowing (eights) in slow motion.
Def. some production stuff as you alluded to, but some nice sounds also, especially like the bass arp. There is a bit of a recent tradition of folks posting early-in-the-month demos in SOTMC and seeing how they develop/transpire with more time spent, might be worth a think about as there's a sturdy basis of elements here...
Now I'm confused.
Is this SOTMC or not?
Please change the title of your thread, or face pitchforks.
Or even worse tuning forks...
Apologies. I am new to this page and don't exactly know what Song of the Month is. I mistakenly thought it was where you put stuff up where you could receive critique.
I am working on a song (with lyrics, vocals, etc) where I have only one verse, because, again, I am trying to learn this stuff before I take on too big a project. Would that be acceptable?
No problem, I had a quick look at your posting history and saw that you were both new-ish to the forum and clearly not a troll, so I assumed it was just a mistake.
SOTMC is indeed a space for people to submit their music for critique, but it's fairly structured in that there is a SoundCloud account and some rules by which contributors are asked to abide by, which is why it's best left to me to post the new threads every month - because the thread requires a fairly substantial commitment in terms of maintaining links and listening to all the contributions. The January thread will be up early next week.
@Reid, no worries. An understandable thingie. Our SOMTC curator is a hard man (but fair guv'nor). What you describe above (I only have one verse etc) sounds perfect for this very informal group. The whole idea (well, for me ) is that many of us only have one verse and perhaps have developed a slew of things with just one verse. The discipline/friendly pressure of pushing through to something more like completeness and getting some honest well-intentioned feedback is the whole point.
It's the 3rd of the month. You've got 28 days to whip it in to shape. The idea here is to get better at the craft, however slowly, by actually doing it. As a walking testimonial I can say that however far away I may be from making what I hear in my head into a reality, I have improved on a number of fronts because of the constraint and timeline (and excellent other ears) that the month defines.
I used the van halen jump synth to hilarious effect. I recommend we all make Jump chord songs haha.
I also use the jump synth and assorted Rothian yelps and "oh yeahs!" to annoy the hell out of my wife. Good fun.
This sounds great. I really do need help. Oddly enough, while I have made music on computers for years, I never did it very well and never improved. There was nobody to give me notes. It was mostly to take a song I'd written and make a record of it.
And certainly while I have a facility with Logic I am now starting pretty much at zero with the peculiarities of Auria and DrumPerfect.
I will be following these discussions from now on and taking part. Thanks for doing this @richardyot
@Reid You have seen the official portrait of our Fearless Leader @richardyot, right?
Looks like I've put on some weight this Christmas. Last time I send Johnny the family snaps though...
Where does one, as in me, find further information/rules about this SOMTC of which you speak?
I am asking as that is pretty much my new years resolution: to finish one song/month. Figured I should check if I might be at all legible for the similarly named concept in here!

Excellent, thanks. So, submissions before the 28th? Just checking what I'm aiming for.
January now open for business, submissions right up to the 31st:

In case you hadn't picked up on it (or indeed anyone else who's reading) Song of the Month Club is a very informal group and everyone's welcome to take part. The measure or qualifier here isn't the relative quality of the songs shared, but the desire to improve your technique and skills, while also finding a place where some sort of deadline can help you focus and get things done. The only other commitment is to bring an honest reaction/response to the other submissions. It is very definitely a two way street.
