Metronome practice. Time Guru isn't pretty but it does have random beat muting.

So this might be a bit off topic, since it isn't about an app to create music, but an app to help musicians get better at making music. I found out about Time Guru some time ago when trying to teach myself better timing for my guitar. The developer has just made an iPad version, and while it isn't pretty or AB compatible, it seems to do the job once you figure it out.

The idea is that the beat from the metronome randomly disappears, and you can test yourself if you are on beat by keeping your own time during the silence, and then seeing if you are back on the beat after the sound is unmuted. I've been watching a few videos on metronome practice and this appears to be highly recommended, as is this app for the iphone.

The iPad app is new and it is on sale right now for $0.99.

  • That's a clever idea, the muting.

  • Yes, it has been requested as a feature for TonalEnergy's met, and I will probably implement it too.

iPad version free as well. Edit: only for a very short time. iPad version is back to €1,99 now.

  • Oh, thanks, I get the iPhone version for free at least. Great app.

  • It turns out I got charged for the iPad version even though it was labeled as free. Not the end of the world but it's not nice. Never had that happen before. I assume they made a mistake making it free and changed it back immediately. One can see on AppZapp's price development that it really was free for a moment. Weird. And Apple's prompt didn't ask me to confirm with the price as usual with paid apps.

  • That's a useful feature. There's a Sweewater video review of another app called Metronomics that's taken that concept to another level:

That was the video that got me putting various metronome apps on my wishlist, appshopper.com FTW. There were a few reviews online and TimeGuru was also recommended. Though in hindsight I think the Metronomics app is probably a nicer interface, and easier to use. At this point, though, I don't think it is worth $3 or $4 for a metronome app just because it is nice looking.

The Metronomics he is showing is Metronomics HD and costs €7,99. I set a price alarm...

  • I think the one difference with the HD version is the addition of the inspector, which analyzes how far you're ahead of or behind the beat. The ability to apply beats and subdivisions randomly and other features is the same in both versions, though the layout looks nicer in the HD version.
