Modstep playing Nave by StepPolyArp
Hi, users,
I believe it is not practical for Modstep (MS) to have sophisticated arpeggiator 'Probability Randomizer' update at the moment or near future.
So, I take a lead to contribute what should be a normal setup to use highly acclaimed arp, SPA, to take advantage of that feature.
It is not that easy for this setup, because it is more than two apps (3 here). I hardly can explain by words for all users to know every steps, so 10 photos here instead. You follow those photos, you will have a perfect and standard way to play StepPolyArp. It can brings you the melody from Probability Randomizer of SPA. That is all about what I am saying for.
Hopefully, you add delay, reverb fx from your synths to make sense to you. So Modstep and SPA combination is awesome to provide a mechanism to experiment for jamming, tracks/song writing!
Nave is the synth on my subject, because it is quite stable on midi setting and has clear midi in/out notation. Many users might like to sequence it on Modstep, so here it is!
If any question, ya, I won't hesitated if I can answer it. There is no hierarchical orders for the photos, The setup is very accurate to represent the way how to play SPA, because I have checked several times what buttons should be on. Enjoy!
A few hints:
Don't send midi cc from MS to Nave, it won't work on this setup. If you really want, use midiLFO.
Normally, you only take the first step note of 16 steps, use 'Length' circle button on MS Step Sequencer page to lengthening that first note or Piano Roll page to do it too. This is important for the setup, because this is natural behavioral way when do SPA alone. It acts like you press the SPA keyboard!
You can use 'Keys' pad on MS Step Sequencer for real time jamming SPA patterns.
Modstep is excellent to play, but it lacks an interesting utility, the probability arp (a randomizer). So when you run out of idea, never forget your iOS app StepPolyArp.
My device, iOS9.2 Air2

Is there a good video tutorial for MODSTEP out there yet?
I am still in the weeds every time I try.
You will be my Modstep hero if you do vid!
My setup is very best by my words. I did casual tries on figure out how this should be done! So today, I plunged in seriously. Modstep is new, so even me, I need to re-think how this works. If you follow every details in those photos, you know you get it.
Rustik, I know you are Nave fan, also a Modstep user. So try it, you won't regret. Nave is fantastic for EDM, so hopefully you got what you love.
This is for audio recording to DAW, so make sure you don't waste time to figure how to transfer what this setup to midi output anything. This is best for audio loop only, then group your grooves later to Auria.
You might wonder why Modstep here? Modstep provides the flow! The comfort and ease of use when finger caressing it. The speed change, the continue patterns sequencing and apps combining. Use Drum Jam, Elastic Drum, Funkbox if want to.
So, don't be bothered by current problems. Learn to play with SPA, don't waste time! You will have many, many good loops spitting out!
@RustiK ,
Just do follow those photos, you make video for a short dance track on Modstep! You will be on YouTube iOS top 10 rank. All credits to you! I bet you, because randomizer is powerful if you have a right combination with other apps joining!
Did a Fugue into StepPolyArp into iSem jam before. Loved it.
Me 2! I love playing StepPolyArp with Auria PSP Echo plugin. However, Fugue is my most versatile tool inside Auria!
@kaikoo, this is awesome. Thanks for taking all the time to share this.
midiSequencer at a super slow tempo division into SPA is one of my favorite things.
Nice tip, Syrucore!
Modstep can do slow division too! Actually I want to write a bit further, but too busy today.
Here is another setup on for multi internal synths to use SPA randomizer:
There are 11 rows on left side of SPA, which can be assigned to maximum 11 channels. By using Modstep internal additive synth, or internal sampler, one can have multi-randomizer working from SPA to maximum 11 columns of Modstep tracks. Each track can use 1 row of SPA or multi-rows from SPA. Normally 2 or 3 channels assigned to those 11 rows can bring quite good lead, bass melody to rhythmic together. At same time, using SPA internal 'Patterns', one can have continuing Modstep tracks and clips playing different pitch, so 2 apps could glue together tightly to be a song.
Here is the setup photos, they are being used for setting up 2 internal synths channels, they are a bit different to Nave 3 apps setup. Just follow the assignment on photos, everyone can understand how this works. Enjoy!
