APPS: Auto- MIDI Bluetooth/WIFI

I would like to see apps that have both IPhone and IPad apps to automatically configure and be able to used as a controller for the other device and vice versa.

Not by a third party app. Not with a bunch of setting changes. Just automatic.

For instance, Animoog.

Would love to have IPad running Animoog and pick up phone and just be able to use it as controller.

For any app actually.

I know some apps like Thumb Jam and Mitoynth have some kind of blutooth/wifi settings. But, I haven't had any luck with them.

I would love to use IFretless like this as well.

I have used Secret Base's app, but, that is one too many more things for me to set up.

Is this presently even the case with any apps?

Have I missed it?

  • There's the issue that any app that can playback and record can't connect over Bluetooth. iOS thing. So, you can't send the mix from a DAW out to bluetooth speakers, as an example. If I am playing Spotify on my iPad, over my iLoud through bluetooth, the minute I start Auria, the connection is killed. That puts a crimp in it.

  • I think RustiK is talking about Bluetooth MIDI, not audio over Bluetooth.

And I agree, it would be very cool to have apps that automatically create a companion mode when two instances of the app are open on separate devices. Bluetooth MIDI is such a great technology, low power and surprisingly low MIDI latency. I would really love to see this.

Imagine Auria where the tracks panel is up on the main iPad and Pro Q2 controls are open full screen on a second iPad. Or a second screen for Gadget. This could be good, very good.

    Exactly!

  • Agreed. Im still just happy i could turn my i-cade into a midi controller! Thanks to stopwatch and that sick company.

Also, MIDI learn this way has been impressive, as with the very low latency.
-Might as well push this envelope so to speak!

Wait... What? That's awesome. Does it send out Midi or did you need to do some conversion? Could you explain more? I just made a new thread on this topic actually.

  • Yeah, its brilliant! I mean if your trying to play a grand piano part it might me a lil goofy, but otherwise for synths, CC and PC it the bees knees

  • There's a network protocol called OSC. All you need for it to work is two devices on the same network. I can connect my iPad to my wifi router, start Lemur, start SuperCollider or one of my Expert Sleepers plugins on my desktop and I'm done (not counting the hours it takes me to design a Lemur template). No setup, it just works.

Last time I tried to pair my iPad with my Mac over bluetooth it just didn't work. I gave up after an hour of trying and searching for solutions. I also posted on this forum and got zero replies.

There was a moment in time when OSC could have become the new standard. Alas, people went for 'good-old' problem-ridden Midi because that was what they knew.

Had developers come up with some sort of a standard for OSC address spaces and parameter feedback, there would be no need for things like Audiobus Remote. There would be better and more customizable solutions.

At this point, afaik, there are exactly zero ios apps that make sound that speak OSC. Also, there are zero commercial hardware controllers that speak it. So sad :'(

  • I believe Thumbjam supports OSC.

And I think TC-Data sends out OSC (although I know it is just a controller).

  • I didn't know that about Thumbjam even though I've owned it for years. Amazing app.

Still, it only sends OSC, just like Lemur, TouchOSC, TC-Data etc. They all act as controllers and according to my internet search a minute ago there are still absolutely no ios apps at all that you can actually control via OSC.

On the desktop, there are DAWs like Logic, Reaper and Ardour, geek tools like Max and SuperCollider, some Expert Sleepers plugins and a few more here and there.

I'm not complaining. Also, I'm aware of OSC issues like network latency and lack of implementation standards. All I'm saying is that this, implemented in the right way, might open up all sorts of possibilities for inter-app communication without any setup (once you've done your mapping).

I guess OSC will remain a geek thing while everybody else will continue to fiddle around with midi.
