Wtf is a 'true punk'? And would they never buy an expensive Gibson Les Paul either?

They would get mummy to buy them one :p Many of the initial Punks were actually spoilt kids from well off families that lived in the burbs. They were Art School dropouts lol.

Later Punk became more about the common man.

  • Ah, I can still smell The Vortex club in the back of my nose some 40 years later. A beautiful stench of half drunk, warm Watneys Red Barrel, floors full of number 10 fag ends & youthful aggression. Another Johnny around at that time wasn't too shabby a writer either. Still isn't!

In all fairness, a lot of the punks I came across while playing the traveler festival circuit with my old band wouldn't have bought an iPad either; they'd just steal it

I'd say the earlier, NY punk scene was the real deal. Dolls, Suicide, Ramones, etc. Even after international recognition, Ramones were still living in squalor, somehow. See the documentary "Hey! Is Dee Dee Home?". Probably free on Netflix or Amazon.

Subsequent generations were these spoiled kids you speak of.

There wouldn't be a Pistols or Clash w/o Ramones, and they've all said so.

Yep they would, along with the guitar you mentioned earlier. Didn't a certain Steve Jones have his collar felt for thieving one!

Late addiction phase, where he couldn't even show his teeth, they were so ravaged. What a loss.... But then again, would we even have a Johnny Thunders, musically speaking, without the dope?

I'm surprised to find two other JT fans here of all places. :)

    Make that three.
In our household he is referred to only as "Johnny"; no surname necessary.

Although I am guilty of peddling junk chic in my past, I am a firm believer that he was great despite his addiction, not because of it.

It's such a sad record, always makes me think of a dead boyfriend of mine.

Which one? Memory or Sad Vacation?
Sorry about your boyfriend. I know the feeling. My girlfriend passed away 3 years ago from Infammatory Breast Cancer at 42 years old. You can't put your arms around a memory.
