SynthQ updated 1/8/16

Midi learn, lots of new presets.
Sleeper with some really fat tones, cool programming scheme...$3, incredible really for this price

Exhaustulated and in need of distraction; fat tones might just see me through...

  • what's so sleepy about it?

  • I can't sleep using it. It can make screaming tones and great for industrial noises too. The keyboard also makes me play it differently.....with more wild abandon.

The Dev I've communicated with seems to care a lot about the app, which is always a good sign :)

  • If anyone wants to take a look at a run through of the MIDI learn feature check this link —

I agree with all of this. The keyboard configuration is unique, and also has me doing unexpected things. And the developer is a great guy who's put a lot of effort and energy into this app. He continues to create more presets with each update.

The dev really seems to enjoy his own synthesizer...can't help making new presets is such a good sign, for some reason reminds me of that saying, never trust a skinny chef

  • Thanks for the kind comments — I try to work on SQ as much as I can, I have a bunch ideas for 2016 that I'm looking into getting done.

I think one of the reasons why I keep hearing the word "sleeper" is because I haven't spent a lot of time making tutorial videos and sharing info about SQ through social media. I think this year is going to be a bit different, I've been streaming my patch making sessions and trying to get a more comprehensive library of reference material together!

  • I wished I had some hardware knobs for SynthQ as it screams to be messed with while playing. I'm sure Trent Resnor would love this synth it just throws out Industrial sounds like no other iPad synth.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who uses it for more bread and butter sounds, because I struggle with those. Then again, I have many synths for those sounds.

SynthQ for myself is a connect to my monitors and play with settings and mod settings until that moment when when you go....Shit man that sounds wicked!

Another reason I think of SynthQ as a sleeper, it's a monster that isn't priced like one, and unlike most iOS monster synths the GUI is "too" accessible. Stealth weapon may be a better term...
Keep up the good work @billjobs_in_space!

  • Another amazing thing is that patches are loaded instantly without a hiccup....had a sequence going and switching between different ones caused no glitches whatsoever...
    Thanx @billjobs_in_space

Every time I use this app, I'm always left very content and impressed. Sounds great, it's a powerful engine for subtractive synthesis (3 OSC, multimode filter, 3 Envs and LFO's each, 8 modulation routing options, FM and Ring Modulation, etc.).

But the best part is the layout. It is still the single smartest layout I've seen for an iOS synth. Even better than Thor's. You can have your patch layout as simple or as complex as you want it (both come in handy at times for patch creation, believe it or not). Color choices are smart. I even love the intro splash screen!

Yeah I recommend this one highly. You nailed it @billjobs_in_space

Yes. It's very deep 3 OSC monster The gui is so smart, and it freaking includes incremental tutorial patches taking you through every level...

  • SynthQ and Poiseiden are probably my 2 favourite interfaces at the moment.

Gotta say, I would love just one more FX slot for SynthQ, but I suppose that's what I have all those AB FX apps for lol

oh man, to be able to add in IAA effects apps in the chain ala-ToneStack would be amazing!

Did you know you can automate preset swithing by sending MIDI Program change messages?

It works by sending program change value 0-127 — and whatever number you choose will choose that number in whatever preset group you're currently in.

So if I have two presets in a preset group and I'm on the first one and want to switch to the second one, I would just send a program change with a value of 1 to get the second preset in the list (because it counts up from zero). Sorry if that's a bit confusing, it's a bit of an obscure feature.

I might experiment in a new version (or new app) that allows you to add an unlimited number of modules dynamically, and the order of the modules will actually affect the signal chain and so forth.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone! If you want to help me out with this project you can always do little helpful things like leaving reviews and ratings on the App Store (most helpful!) or following me, or synthQ on twitter and also facebook. Also share these links with your friends!

Thanks also to everyone who has mentioned the synth being underpriced. I didn't want to set the price too high because I wanted it to me more accessible to more people, especially beginners (it would be nice if a few schools picked this up in their music departments!). This project also has been a learning experience for me as a guy who enjoys tinkering around with synths and I wanted to see for myself if I could take on this kind of project. There are still a lot of areas where I think it's a bit rough around the edges in comparison to the bigger name music apps so I didn't feel like pricing them in that tier.

That said, being an indie software dev offers many freedoms but it is still a starving artist tier line of work. If you enjoy the project and want to aid its development, feel free to donate to my patreon or through paypal at [email protected].

Thanks @billjobs_in_space , didn't know that, ....nice feature, but I am not sure if I will use that..just yet...at the moment I am happy to discover the sounds and have them sequenced and do some midi assignments.
Thanks for your support, greatly appreciated.

  • How do you know it will be updated on the first of august? What if it’s late, or early?

  • According to ISO8601 that date should read 2016-01-08, SynthQ was updated a few days ago ;)

    That is correct :)

  • Is time travel possible in this thread?

  • There's others in here, but I think they may already be included in the latest update: http://never-be-normal.com/preset_packs/synth-Q/
