eDrummer looking for app that will replace the rest of the band. :)
I've had it! I've had enough with all of you keyboarders and geetarist getting all these tools to replace drummers, yet we drummers never get any apps to replace you!
Yes, I'm joking...
Kind of...
But really...
I'm looking for an app that I can jam along with (i.e. not "compose" a song... Imagine an app where i can give it an initial key, chord progression, and bass line, and over the next 30 minutes of free-form experimental rock fusion jazz psychedelic space jamming) it will create/generate/modify things like the basslines, chords, etc. on the fly with "guidance" when I hit a pad (keep in mind, I can code a pad to do things like mimic a rot. encoder... hit hard, turn right, hit soft, turn left, etc.)... A lot of the "generative" apps I find are a little too... uhhhhhhh... freeform (random bleep bloop stuff generated by algos like "game of life" etc...) or they are too much like band in a box where you need to go into it with a song structure (ABACAB).
There's sooo many apps that work the other way (you play melody, app generates chords, bass, drums, etc.) but I can't find anything that will do it the other way based on how I play my edrums, hit pads to "tell" it to go up the progression, down the progression, shift chords, etc...
So, is this another snipe hunt I need to build myself?
Kind of is the right direction if it:
- Allows MIDI in to control patches/parameters
- Allowed MIDI out so i can control other gear
Actually if CB had those two things, I would throw large sums of money at the developers...
EDIT: Not that it matters, although I'd imagine it may based on the "fit" of some tools to various music styles, but I'd be mostly looking to play music that would end up sounding like a cross between DJ Shadow + Morcheba + early Pink Floyd... Turntablist Umma Gumma...

You could try one of the session band apps and turn down the drum part.
Thanks @Fruitbat1919. I actually tried one... Biggest issues are they are sample-based, not MIDI, and you need to go into it knowing what you want.. As far as I could tell, there was no way to modify the song at playback time via MIDI messages... So they are great composition and "practicing" apps, but not good for more improv. type jamming. Unless i missed something somewhere...
But yea.. If there was a tool like Session band that could play external midi instruments, and allow on the fly things like chord changes, mods, etc. based on midi input, that would be pretty darn close... Like maybe Auxy if Auxy had more MIDI capabilities... So many apps that are soo close but not quite there...
You may be able to rig a few apps to get something I liar to what you want. I will put on my thinking cap.
Some kind of arp or sequencer apps may be of use. Thesys can be used to control other apps and play off a keyboard to change the pitch. It may be possible to use another app or Lfo to play certain key ranges, either randomly or programmed.
Will give it some thought another day, as it's pretty late here
Check out MidiBand 3.1
I think it will do what you want. You can mute the drums and have the whole band play the rest. And tiu can use Roland SC app to play the sounds. Its actually pretty fun once you find some good free rock styles. There's a whole thread on Midiband and links to free styles.
Chordbot is really amazing at generating chord progressions and midi files, there is also fugue machine, xynthesizr and noatikl that can generate interesting music on the fly
Yea, as soon as fugue machine allows diff. midi channels per head, I'll be all over it
Tried xynthesizr... Too bleepy bloopy totally random from what I could see
I looked briefly at noatikl, but couldn't tell how "serious" it was due to looking like a toy, and the lack of reviews/tutorials/videos, etc. I've burned through so many $8+ apps looking for something, I was hesitant to drop another $10... But maybe I'll give it a shot...
Thanks @pierre
Noatikl is serious but it s hard to get something not calm/peaceful/quiet out of it, I really like it though even if the UI take some time to get use to
There's also Gestrument that has a "hold" mode and setup correctly can generate music
If you have a PC, you should look at Band in a Box.
