Synthwave sounds

Hey guys,

I have been listening to a lot of synthwave lately and I fell in love with the synth sounds you can hear in this genre. I was wondering if any of you would have some synths app in mind that could help me achieve this type of sound?

Here is an example of the sounds I am searching for:

For drums I was thinking about DM1 processed with reverb and comp.

Any thought?

Sunrizer, Thor, sunvox? Gadget London might do some drums and other synth stuff.

Curious to find out what gives you the sounds. Good luck.

  • Any of the sounds could be done by Gadget at a push, but you will need to record each instruments and drums out individually to a daw for FX.

The thing is with this kind of music, you are spoilt for choice instrument wise, but Korg iM1 stands out for me as a good starting point. Very 80s. Just add lots of reverb.

You will need good reverb, delay and compression FX, so maybe look what your DAW has available or get some good stand alone apps.

The drum sounds are not an issue for many drum apps, but you will need to record them separately so you can FX the drums correctly to get that sound well.

Also think about Korg iPolySix, iSem and WaveMapper :)

  • Just wanted to add the TF7 for some DX sounds.

  • Also, keep the mix simple, maybe deliberately try to keep the track count low.

Keep the mix airy and so the FX has room to breathe.

  • I would say AniMoog on bass, Magellan for pads and either one for lead synth.. And yes DM1 for the classic 80's drum sounds.

  • Most has been nailed so far
But add iProphet to that party
I would use AUFX:Dub and Space with a bit of noise ;)

Peter Vogel CMI is a good source for these retro sounds too

  • Korg iPolysix

  • Thank you for the hints!

After watching some videos, Sunrizer, TF7, Im1 have my preference but synths apps are so cheap that I may eventually buy all the apps mentioned...

  • If you want to start really simple, just buy Nanostudio. Great little drum and synth app that even has use later when you use other apps.

I think that's what most of us end up doing...
