iRIG midi2

I was wondering how does the iRig midi 2 work, that is different, or what more does it do, than plain ol' USB connection to CCK to iPad....Do I need it?

My hardware: Beat Step Pro and Edirol PCR-300 controller.
I have basically 2-3 possibilities to hook it all up:

1] BSP and PCR into unpowered USB hub splitter. Fine, but I can not use PCR to record notes into BSP, but it works as an extra MIDI controller. (apps that can have more than 1 input)

2] PCR midi out into MIDI in of BSP and then BSP USB out into iPad. Here I loose all midi controls of PCR, because BSP filters it out. But I can play/record notes into BSP via keyboard...(better touch sensitivity than BSP)

What would iRig do better? If I use the MIDI through can I get more midi functions? Does it have more flexibility, like using MIDI out of BSP, etc?...It has IN/OUT/THROUGH...

How do you people usually use this IRIG MIDI 2 thing?
Thanks for any tips

iRig MIDI2 allows you to charge while using, in conjunction with iRig Powerbridge.
The old iRig MIDI + 30 pin to Lightning connector will also do this via micro USB.
Wonder why IK ditched this opportunity with the MIDI2 ?

  • I use a beatstep (not pro) along with an akai LPK25, I have both connected using powered USB and by using MIDIBridge can send midi notes from LPK to Beatstep

The original irig midi doesn't charge an iPad through the 30 pin to lightning connector, might work with an iPhone.

    Mine does work. Air2, 8.4.1

    Thanks for replies :)

Maybe I should ask differently...What difference is there in using MIDI connection via iRIG MIDI, versus the same connection using micro USB MIDI? (without irig midi)

There is some difference, for example I can't record notes from external sequencer (BSP) into Elastic Drums.
Magnum 38 (his app) sent me a video where he's using irig and it works...?

    Sorry video link didn't work

I use an iRig MIDI 1 with a 30-pin to lightning connector and it keeps my iPad mini charged OK when plugged in to just a regular small square Apple charger. Also keeps my older 30-pin iPads charged no problem.

The iRig MIDI (1 at least - can't speak for the 2 since I only have 2 1's), is pretty transparent as far as MIDI goes.

I also use external keyboards either directly via the CCK adapter or lightning->USB cable, or using a USB hub. In that case you don't get any charging of course. However, again, I have not found any issues with transparency as far as MIDI goes.
