Needing Studiomux help, can anybody help?
Hey all, New user here with a new iPad. I just got my iPad Air 2 and a bunch of music making apps and I'm just getting familiarized with this new territory. So far it's awesome and I am totally in love
Of course, I got Audiobus immediately and I also got Studiomux which has been not working since I got it. I'm hoping somebody clever here may be able to help me out. Between the tutorial on the website, and the lack of videos on YouTube, I'm lost in the dark with the right way to get it up and running.
-Audiobus & Studiomux / Server are latest versions-
Here's the rundown:
- I make Sure the server is running on my Mac, iPad is connected via camera connection kit
- I start Audiobus & load a synth (FM4) and Studiomux as the output in AB, and load both on my iPad
- I start Studiomux & check that all is loaded & working in channel VIII, I test using internal monitoring, and synth makes sound
- *****Looking for blue lights in Studiomux to confirm connection, but no such luck
- *****I check server in startup bar on my Mac. It says MIDI & Audio connections both 0/0, greyed out.
- *****I load Ableton 9.5, cannot find Studiomux/audiomux in audio prefs as in input/output sound card tab
- ***** i've tried loading the plug-in both audio units and VST, to see if that might help able to recognize the iPad, but no luck
Any ideas where I'm going wrong with this? I can plug-in a MIDI controller into the iPad, play the synth, I get sound out. So I know it's working, but Studiomux doesn't seem to recognize my iPad
It's getting really annoying, I want to be able to have this work and play my iOS synthesizers from my DAW. Any help would be much appreciated

Don't know if it helps, but shouldn't you use the Lightning to USB cable (the charging cable) in stead of the CCK ?
Hmm, interesting. I wasn't aware they made them. Everything I read on other forums said to use the CCK, so that's what I bought . Perhaps I'm a bit uninformed
The charging cable that came with your iPad, is the one to use!
Having a facepalm moment over here, looks like I had the wrong cord
The good news is that I'm now showing midi & audio connections in server, which is FANTASTIC. Thank You.
However, my iPad is not showing up in the configuration in Ableton. Closer still, but not quite there yet....
Any more ideas?
Can you be more specific?
Audio or MIDI?
If Studiomux is working right your device should be listed in the Ableton audio config as an audio device (with 18 ins and 2 outs!).
You should also be able to find it in the audio/MIDI configuration utility. (Where you can add it to a composite device if you need to bind in other devices)
In the MIDI configuration page IIRC You won't see any MIDI for your iPad specifically, only the apps you have loaded and offering MIDI ports (ports listed in the local ports section of the studiomux app).
EDIT: My bad. Just checked. You should also see a MIDI port for studiomux itself.
Anyway, I've found OS X gets confused occasionally, so if you're not seeing what you expect a reboot is usually the first thing to try.
re-attaching the iPad is sufficient to force the OS to recognise new MIDI ports. But it not necessary most of the time, ports get recognised immediately.
In Windows you have to close and reopen your DAW again after you've created a new MIDI port (every time you run a new music app while Studiomux is running a new port is created), don't know how it is on Mac.
The procedure is therefore similar to this: first set up all devices with Studiobus and all apps already running, attach the device with the standard charging cable to the computer where Studiomux server is already running (it should autostart after booting). Then you can load the project from last week and all ports should be there like last time and you can instantly continue working.
Changing the setup during the session (other apps, additional device, etc.) is not a problem as described above; simply restart the DAW or instrument. OSC is better in that regard, OSC has thousands of ports permanently open, they just have to be set correctly on both sides and it'll always work after you change the setup during a session.
Lastly the audio part of Studiomux with the plugins ... I think that one is the easiest to understand. Choose effect apps for DAW inserts, instrument apps for DAW instruments, although this is not a fixed rule. You can also run instrument apps in an insert slot. And new apps appear in the Studiomux plugins as soon as these apps are started, so you have total freedom during a session to change audio processing or generating apps on the fly. Transforming your iPad into a directly accessible insert slot hardware with its own processing.
If you have El Capitan as OS go to audio midi setup and in Windows drop down click on iOS device browser and enable iPad in pop up box.
In Live preferences audio input should be iPad and output should be your audio interface or built in audio from Mac.
No, don't do that! That sets up IAA not studiomux. And it's stupidly unstable! Yikes!
I use it all the time with no issues.
Well okay, fair enough, but I've had nothing but crashes on both my Macs. That is why I started using studiomux, its audio transfer doesn't crash.
Perfect! That was what I needed to know-- it was simply turning things on in the correct order. Everything is working great now. Many, many thanks to you, and to all who made an effort to help
