How do you guys store, manage, and organize your files, soundfonts, presets, patches and samples?

I search the forums and was pretty surprised not to see more conversation about this.

I've got tons of samples, midifiles, soundfonts, etc.

For a while, I "started" over on a library folder on my laptop that has about 80GB of stuff. I keep that in a dropbox. The reason I use my laptop is that I find it much more efficient for sample hunting.

I've followed a routine of finding files i want in DropBox, and then "Open in..." an app directly, or save to audioshare for future use. The problem is that this is clunky, and requires you to be online, unless you tell dropbox to sync folders locally. (more on that later)

I also periodically, copy my "Library" folder onto a 128GB USB that I use with a wireless hub if I'm on a plane.

Audioshare seems like a natural hub (especially since it is not restricted to audio files).

Recently, however, I've been asking why I down just "star" folders in dropbox to be stored locally? For example, I use the reddit's Ultimate Production Kit. Today I used iTunes to copy these files into audioshare. But it does beg the question, why don't I just designate that folder to be synced locally to the ipad?

How do you organize your files? I'm just about ready to go the dropbox local sync way, and not use audioshare as my main audio library. And that feels weird. You also sacrifice the ability to trim, and do all the other stuff audioshare does.

Thoughts? How do YOU organize your files, samples, etc.?

I use a combo of AudioShare and Dropbox as much as possible. Otherwise just do regular backups.

I think all apps should have the option of storing any and all of their files to cloud storage.

For me it is an ever morphing mess with no ideal central method. For the most part my PC is the hub (carrier) and the iPad is the chopper that I fill with green berets / marines for a particular mission. However one thing I do that helps is simply numbering the song I am working on and then number the synth/fx patches appropriately to match so that when i revisit them I can easily cue up the related IAA content and samples in different apps. Because of this I now have lots of numbered folders on my PC as well. This really helped grease the gears for me and enabled mixing and matching lots of apps etc without losing my mind.

BTW if you are on PC I find that this program is a pretty awesome sample browser. The pro version promises tons of awesome features and I cannot wait for it to come out!

iElectribe is so easy to restore. Just load the backup file. 2secs and all your patterns are loaded.
Want to save them? Create backup.
All synths(and games) should have this no?

  • Dropbox and Audioshare! Everything else was lost in the depth of BeatMaker 2 curios folder structure.

Yeah, 2016 iOS 9.2 and its still not possible to use local share directory folders.
Last week i asked the apple support if i maybe missed it....but its sadly true thats still not possible.

So my PC is still the center of my orga, too

  • Is the iOS music app world big enough to set up standards for things like file handling and MIDI implementation? It is kind of the Wild Wild West right now. Curious to hear what Sebastian has to say on this.

  • Dropbox + AudioShare.

  • @anickt the Implementation of MIDI on iOS remains and will continue to remain problematic as there are a couple of variations on how to do so and there are so many indie developers, and even larger developers who do their own thing when it comes to MIDI. I think a number of developers have been using the MidiBus library.

I don't know that @Sebastian will be much help in this regard either as the MIDI implementations in his apps SP Pro and SP Electro are significantly different. Contributing to the challenge of standard MIDI implementation is the trade-off between providing comprehensive MIDI options which MIDI savy musicians can deal with versus concerns too many MIDI options will confuse most people and the app developer will be blamed for the problem when they try to use MIDI. Even when you know what you're doing it can still be quite a hassle to reconfigure the MIDI in apps when you have different setups as very few apps have any sort of MIDI preset capability.

I've found apps like MIDI Bridge and later MIdiflow allow me to get around most of the MIDI inconsistencies I've run across with the exception of sync. Really glad Link came about to alleviate the sync issues.

I've been using AudioShare for more current material, and Google Drive, and Dropbox for longer term storage. The ability to access cloud storage via the iCloud option, which usually provides options for AudioShare, Google Drive, Dropbox etc., has been very useful in reducing duplicate copies of material.

  • @Paul

Regarding your first paragraph - this is exactly what I'm referring to regarding standardization. MIDI 1.0 has been a standard for some 30 years and it's still around and useful. That's because people follow the standard.

I only suggested Sebastian as someone who is a dev central to app developers everywhere.

  • @anickt While I can't speak for the Audiobus team, they have been approached before about taking a lead role in MIDI iOS standardization in other threads on the forum but have consistently declined to do so. Standards are only as effective as the willingness of people to adhere to them and many developers haven't, aren't well versed in them, or may have decided it doesn't meet their current needs.

  • I stuck a 128gb USB stick into the back of my ASUS router and set it up as a wi-fi drive. I use GoodReader to store and retrieve SFs, samples and whatnot. GoodReader supports Open in..., DropBox, and imports from AudioShare. Pretty happy with it.

  • AudioShare and Dropbox

  • Yup AudioShare, Dropbox, GoodReader, and iCloud Drive

  • I bought a bigger iPad...lol
My first one was 16 bg and coming from windows I foolishly though that files are "shared"

So 64 bg Air 2 solved the problem ...But still, I make sample folders on PC and bring the content in via iTunes and then bulk move into AudioShare, this app saved the show...
How more idiotic and time consuming can it get on iOS to load your samples into for example DrumPerfectPRO? It takes a good hour to make up a kit :#

I have also a wifi SD, but gave up on it because this retarded system of "one sample at a time" drove me crazy...

For me: AudioShare, PC and a bit of Dropbox...

Hi John.. I do it the old fashioned way, by plugging into my desktop and using iTunes. I have 32gigs, which means I have to dump (samples mainly, cus they take up most space) about once a month.. I'll usually start with the apps that have the most samples/audio in like Cubasis and TwistedWave.. But it does mean I have to go thru each app saving to desktop and then into the the app itself to delete/clear samples after.

Besides I'm not too up on wi-fi and Dropbox.
