Can Modstep be the groovebox of my dreams?
Well, it's not going to be on my iPad 3rd gen, but I am so very curious how newer iPads (Pro, Air 2, Air 1) perform with this new software. I realize Modstep can be used to sequence hardware, but my goal is to create an all-in-one groovebox on IOS. I've been hoping for something like this since the first iPad came out. Modstep is more like a live performance sequencer (I dont need or want song mode) and when it was first announced on CDM I was like, "Finally!" And I actually do have some lovely external devices at my disposal, so at some point integrating the hardware is planned. But, I really want to see if it's possible to create a Live PA rig with just an iPad and midi controller. Modstep represents a real possibility for this and I'm considering purchasing an iPad Pro if I can determine this will work (even with a few bugs squashed on the way).
Are there any of you using Modstep on newer iPads? How many IAA instruments (and FX) can be run simultaneously in Modstep on newer models, with low latency (min. 256 sample buffer) and stable performance?
Example setup - Waldorf Attack and Nave, iProphet, Poseidon, iMini and iSem.
Am I asking too much or can the iPad Pro do it?
Thanks to everyone and @cblomert ahead of time!

On Air1 I run Patterning/Turnado, Egoist/Effectrix, Animoog without any grief. I can hop between them and adjust parameters, set up ccs etc with pretty much perfect recording on the fly.
I try adding Heavy Brass, Poseidon, iSymphonic etc to the mix and it gets dicey so for now I am just focued on the aforementioned three. It really is the meta-groovebox for me right now. But who knows, if Gadget2 has really sweet FX at some point (which I kind of doubt) I may go back to it.
I think it has a song mode doesn't it?..... not like you have to use it but anyways I'm interested too
Mod steppers where ya at?
No Song mode in current version, but the developers were soliciting input for such a mode in the other thread, so I guess we'll be getting a song mode before long.
wow really , glad this thread popped up.
I wouldn't trust using any instrument or FX hosted in IAA in a live environment. I don't know if it is IAA itself or if it is certain implementations of it, some instruments work fine for hours, then suddenly cause issues, others cause issues from the start, regardless of the IAA Host. The issues include dropped or hanging notes, no sound at all and even complete crash of host and instrument. None of which are helpful in any situation, least of all a live one. One of the IAA's you mentioned is one of the ones that causes me most issues, iMini. It seems to work fine stand-alone or in AB but in IAA I find it very unstable, which is really annoying as it is one of the ones I want to use most.
ModStep is awesome once you get your head around it and is flexible enough to let you change how you drive it and what you drive with it, so any time invested in making loops and tunes within it is not time wasted as you can send the output to whichever stable sound generators you have at the time and then change that routing once other stable sound generators become available. I have not spent enough time with the internal synth to know if it gives me enough scope for everything I would want to do or what processing pressure it puts on the system, but you could exclusively use this and not need IAA at all.
Maybe in a years time when AU is more widely available and proved stable I would consider such a setup for live.
All that being said, I have had 8 tracks running, 4 sampler, iMini, iSem, iM1, and Gallileo on an iPad Mini2, but like I said it isn't flawless.
For stability, if it was me, I'd considered reducing down that list of IAAs.
Instead, I'd look at Eden within NanoStudio and have that replace, say, iSem, iMini and Poisden. NanoStudio lets you send midi to multiple instances of Eden (and its TRG sampler if you want).
So I know you'd miss those synths, but you could probably create similar sounds in Eden, and then just run, say, Attack and Nave too. That's just 3 apps to then worry about instead of 5.
Elastic Drums or iElectribe may be more stable replacements for Attack (if it's giving issues).
Agree with Andy. I don't think IAA is ready for prime time live yet. I've run 3 for hours with no problems, next time I've set up the exact same way, it bombs
That could have more to do with Retronyms having coded iMini rather than it being an IAA issue, like how iMini always had poor MIDI implementation compared to other Arturia apps that weren't developed by Retronyms.
Maybe - but I have a hazy memory of RIM mentioning on his forum once that IAA wasn't the most stable beast even at the best of times. It's like Apple never took the time to work some of the finer kinks out.
Was just coming here to post this same question, thanks guys. How about the internal synth and sampler, deep enough for a live set if I just want to ignore external hardware and IAA for now?
I get problems with every IAA at some point, including iM1 which is one of the most stable. iMini is the one that gives most issues, not the only one that gives issues.
Man, a modstep crash with 3 apps running thru it can really kill your enthusiasm, with some of the apps going wonky. Was having fun too, but gave up when it became debugging mode.
I'm hoping AU takes off and Modstep then goes AU. IAA is a pain for using many apps. It just works like iOS midi.....when it wants to
IAA aside the app is not ready for live performance, way too unstable on my iPad Air 2, manage to crash it every time if I hit too many clips to fast.
Having said that I absolutely love it and will stick with it if the developer is active.
If you can reproduce a crash, and report it to them, they will fix it.
I want to use Modstep In order to sequence my volca beats. I'd like to know now if you can assign the pads section inside Modstep to specific note values or is it locked to c1,c#1 ect
The midi notes of the volca beats do not correspond to those appearing on the pads and it would need us to customise the pads sections in order to take fully advantage of Modstep awesome possibilities.
Thks for your answer!
You can assign both note and octave to the pads in the template editor. There are templates for Volcas included in the app
Can anyone confirm if this app is stable if I'm only seq external midi hardware? Want to buy but not until I know this works
Of course! Works flawless with external gear! I use my iPad 1 + Alesis iDock for sequencing hardware only. Since version 1.0.2 everything's going well
! Just do it...
And... I bought it
And... I lost there, damn, need to check some videos
i was lost at first and after about three hours it felt like everything totaly clicked. It just kind of cascaded and was really quite exciting.
Where you started? Plain manual?
Just trial and error plunking around on it.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Too bad it seems that IAA isn't going to be stable enough. Apple's lack of concern for the future viability of IAA seems to be cemented in their rollout of Audio Units for IOS. It's crap like this that makes me want to ditch tablets and computers for music making in general. I'm guessing the developers feel even more frustrated.
But one question still remains - what about using the internal sampler and synth? I'd consider sticking to my guns in creating an IOS groovebox using the sampler if I could reliably trigger audio loops (similar to Ableton Live.)
I'm really enjoying myself with Modstep, using it as a groove box as you describe. I'm mostly using IAA instruments, and for my stuff I'm not needing more than 5-6 instruments (including a drum synth which in a mix would normally have separate tracks for BD, snare, OH, etc). I can't think of a use for more than this # of tracks.
In terms of the onboard sampler and synth: they're deep enough to do a lot, the question is when you talk about triggering audio loops, do you mean triggering audio clips somehow?
One great advantage of using ModStep as a drum module, is being able to have separate tracks for groups of drums that need different FX settings. Also being able to have different fill setups.
Some IAA setups just seem to work ok, so it's quite a powerful tool using Modstep once you find a setup that works well.
I find the sampler works really well for triggering audio loops. The last update also seems to have fixed a crash bug for when jumping very quickly between clips. It will be great if and when you can simply import samples from audioshare.
Even using iaa i have had great results with some apps. Egoist, effectrix, turnado, animoog, elastic drums, fugue machine, patterning and gadget all work great for me in Modstep. Certainly not all at the same time on my air1. In my mind this is an awesome sketchpad/ stem generator but i am sure one could hit on a cool live rig provided they are open to going with what works and do not not have an extremely specific preconcieved agenda. These days i can jam with it for up to an hour without problems provided i simply go with what works in regards to app combos.
Very cool. Could you name the apps? Particularly the drum synth.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000
Most stable: the beloved iElectribes...I wish iPhone and iPad iterations would answer to different midi channels, though splitting kits can be cool for later mixes...
Also Elastic...though tweaking on the fly (notes and cc) can crash the audio and requires shutting ED down and restarting.
Least stable and really prone to audio crash though tasty is Seekbeats.
Cool. Thanks. IElectribe (either one) is great. I just love it.
SeekBeats I gave up on because it crashed so much for me when driving it with midi. Real shame.
