iOS simple slicing sampler with midi

I'm thinking of building my own sampler. What I wish to accomplish:

• big waveform view where you can record / paste an audio file
• add slice markers.
• each slice responds to a midi note starting C3 or whatever.
• (I'd be awesome if I accomplish this one) run as AU in Garage band.

Problem solved.

  • I wish somebody build a BATTERY 3. It was the best sampler ever.
Easy to setup, make kits, assign midi, each sample tweak-able...
    Just great...

  • First build a game about floppy birds and gang wars or something & then build music apps when your freemium game income starts rolling in.

  • I actually have two apps. One in the store and one pending.
But audio stuff is way beyond my skills.

I've only managed to create a button that sends a midi note with velocity from the 3D Touch.

Samplr gets pretty close to this, eh? Just missed on bullet 3, I think.

  • Yeah, that's why I want to roll my own.
    Plus it doesn't zoom :P

Yeah, can't tell you how many times I've wanted to "play" Samplr slices on an external controller. :-)

  • Sector can do that, as long as the hits on the sample are quantized to the bpm, you can set the keyboard range somewhere on the preferences

  • I know, I have Sector.
I'm really into something more like an MPC but lightweight like Samplr.

I've tried doing it in Gadget with that Abu Dhabi (I think) sampler, but it's messy because you can't delete slice points or add more.

  • ^what!? I've got to dig into Sector some more

  • While I agree that Samplr would benefit from midi triggering I think loads of other priority improvements should come first IMO. Link, FX automation and pan per track to name a few. I also think that because of different playing modes, samplr is a perfect instrument to be played on screen. It's just not an MPC style sampler.

@alexbuga great dude, hope you'll succeed with your project. I'm sure there's plenty of peeps over here who'd like to try it out.

  • What would be great on a sampler is if I could map different slices to velocities, and the sampler would dynamically crossfade between them, eg. I have samples of different snares, and in the same sample, I have different 'velocities' played in that same snare, if I could just throw that on one pad that could map the slices to different velocities, it would be amazing!

I agree with your prioritization list for Samplr, especially Link. And I agree about how the app is optimized for playing on screen, didn't you say that you don't like staring at a screen in a live situation?

Also, do you know if the developer is actively working on it? It's an indispensable app to me; just so useful.

  • Gotta say @lukesleepwalker that with staring at the screen while playing live Samplr will always be an exception. It also depends how much of the stage is visually occupied by screen swiping. With drums, guitar, harmonica, impaktor and vocals I think there's plenty to look at. Of course a big fat screen behind the stage showing iPad's screen would be ideal.

It would be really hard to trigger remotely modes like the ebow or even the arp where vertical swipes are so important for the dynamics. I don't know, each to their own I suppose.

  • Multitrack Studio has something close to this with its Matrix sampler.

Egoist would be great with this feature too.

Egoist segments do respond to MIDI notes (one of its greatest assets), you just can't sample into it.

edit: for that matter, Sector does too

I've gotten sector to do it, but Egoist only seems to do program change on MIDI notes. Where am I going wrong?!

  • Shit. I forgot about Egoist. Just what I wanted. Thanks. Ps this is my other account. I'm logged in with Twitter on my mac

I've been wanting to fund a next-generation Beat Twirl. Maybe we could find a way to work together?

Make sure that when you're on the Slicer screen, the keyboard button at the bottom left is highlighting and you're seeing the 1-16 keys to the left. When you see that, the Egoist slicer responds to MIDI notes. When it's showing the other options (forget what they call it), that's when note response doesn't work. Annoying, but that's how it is.

    Ooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Now I get it!

It kept on changing programs on me instead, and now I know why! It prefers the default middle range of the keyboard, and lower notes change the program DESPITE the fact that it is turned off on the Egoist settings screen. So my stuff was just jumping all around like crazy.

    Thank you!
