Volotic – Among The App Store Best of 2015 — Now Free For iPhone
Howdy!
My name is Scott Garner. I’m a multi-disciplinary artist, currently using iOS as a platform for the creation of sound art. I would like to announce the release of a new version of Volotic, a kind of musical playground for iOS. I've added a lot of new features, but the biggest news is iPhone support.
Volotic has been showcased numerous times by Apple and was selected for inclusion among the App Store Best of 2015.
Download Volotic for free on the App Store.

Before you ask, Volotic doesn't yet have Audiobus integration. It's built using Unity, so rolling in Audiobus support is tricky, but I think I've found a way to make it happen using the Unity Native Audio Plugin SDK. This isn't at the top of my list since Volotic was created as a sandbox for experimentation rather than as a serious authoring tool, but I wanted to let you all know that these kinds of features are definitely on my radar.
Volotic does have a "Plus Mode" as an in-app purchase that offers more towers and features. Keep in mind that every upgrade to Plus Mode is a vote for continued development.
Please also take a look at Ostinato, my latest iPad app, which allows users to draw a song by connecting nodes in a 3D network.
Thank you!

Thank you! Will give it a try!
I'll also give it a go. Already had an enjoyable turn with Ostinato, and may expand on some of the results.
BTW— I do like your selection of sounds in Ostinato, but being musically restless, I still used Live's audio to MIDI feature to extract the notes and have my way with the sequence. If you're looking for an IAP to support your habit, add midi out and I'll be onboard (if Unity doesn't throw a wrench in those works as well).
I totally understand the woes of a limited sound palette. Maybe you could expand a little on your ideal midi workflow? Examples of apps that you think do the job well would really help.
This app is a really fun app. You'll get sounds and patterns that you wouldn't normally plan on creating, which is the genius of it.
My two daughters really like this one. That doesn't mean that it should be thought of as a "toy", but that the interface is very accessible and intuitive.
When I discovered an issue with the app, I reached out to Scott. He quickly reviewed the issue, sent me a TestFlight link to test the fix, and updated the app immediately. That's good stuff right there.
@Seangarland Happy to help! I also do interactive installation work for children's museums, so seeing kids get creative with something I've made is super rewarding.
Thanks!
In return for all of these changes I ask that you…
• Call your mom.
• Clean up the crumbs on the counter.
• Rate and review Volotic.
• Check out my other work at www.scottmadethis.net.
That's funny! Gonna download it soon, and do the IAP.
I didn't realize there was an IAP. Plus Mode Enabled!
I downloaded this the other day, and thought it would be a good as a MIDI controller. Maybe a MIDI in app purchase would do the trick. Could have a section for notes, a section that transposed notes up or down, then another for note length.
I remember grabbing this about a year ago, and thought that it was cool. But I didn't get a chance to check it out much because I finally bought Gadget, and BeatHawk debuted at about the same time; my life was seriously changed at that point.
I'm gonna check this out again.
All I need is a simple midi out and the ability to choose one of the sixteen channels for each of Ostinato's four instruments (Volotic would be a bit trickier perhaps). You would need to implement background audio and internal muting so that the user can flip through presets or adjust sound to taste in the other apps. Pretty standard stuff. SoundPrism Pro has a nice implementation.
It would also be nice to be able to record in-app the audio and midi simultaneously and give the choice of what to export to the user (via AudioShare). This is a feature I love in Firo, an app I'm always trumpeting. Free and worth a look for ideas.
As a long time fan of Volotic :
MIDI output for Volotic would be superb. Either live or save as MIDI file style.
Looking forward to future developments too.
Thanks for the info and suggestions, @aaronpc and others. I think basic MIDI support would be a good place to start for both Ostinato and Volotic. It will take some trial and error to figure out the best way to bridge the Unity side of things to CoreMIDI, but I have some ideas.
I'm currently in the middle of working on a new iOS sound project, but I may make a simple little sound toy in the meantime with MIDI support just to figure things out a bit.
does volotic have sample import?
Not as far as I've found. It is very clever, elegant, but eventually small (for my purposes). So far.
ok thanks
