1. How do I connect with iOS music developers? 2. What about a "fund"?
A couple of times here I have tried to connect with iOS music developers. I have a few app ideas, and I would be open to funding some development. Ordinarily, I could tap my own generic (non musical) geek network, but I am thinking more of people who are passionate about, and know how to develop for, music
I also am interested in supporting iOS music development in general.
Is there a way to participate in the developer forum here if you are not a developer?
I'm also interested in potential funding other people's great ideas. Is anyone interested in putting together a small fund for iOS music app development?
I don't perceive it as a money making venture... Developers are pretty clear that iOS music is a rough road financially. Nor do I imagine these projects to be ginormous.
But it might be rewarding to fund he next audiobus, link, or fugue machine.
Thoughts?

I think social media funding sites like indiegogo and kickstarter could be tools to support developers.
Develop consensus on what app should be developed, and what functionalities it should have. Sites like the Audiobus forum would be good for this.
How will the app be supported in the future?
Realistic idea about what sorts of resources would be needed to create the proposed app. Once a user consensus has been decided upon, it can be provided to developer forums for feedback.
Recruit developers willing to work on the project. The feedback from developer forums will provide more focused information for developers who are considering taking on the project.
Setup a campaign proposal on one of the social marketing sites including the above information. What is the significance of the app? What unfulfilled need does it meet? The proposal should include a road map for the app's development and support. Videos demonstrating the value and investment already made in the app. Describe what the funds raised in the proposal will be used for. Provide information about what the developers have done before that qualifies them to be able to successfully create the proposed app.
I think the value of this sort of approach is that it can help to bring focus and commitment to the process of developing apps people want, including defining the need, what it requires to meet the need, how much it will cost to meet the need, and then asking people to commit to bringing about the creation of the app through financial contributions.
I work in a dev shop. We don't do music apps. We have various folks coming in with various requests. We're more of a body shop, but if you came to us with an idea and enough cash, we would build something. But we wouldn't do the promotion, support, etc. We're one kind of shop.
IF someone had their own dev shop, and IF they were not working on six things already, and IF they thought your idea was worthwhile, then you might get some traction. But that's a lot of ifs, and typically those folks are either very busy building something, or getting out of the business, because they have to be crazy busy to make a living.
There must be some venture capitalists somewhere financing some iOS dev, but I doubt it's in music apps, not much money there.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, I don't know that there's a way to do this. You almost have to find someone with some good idea that needs some cash. And how you figure out that they have both a good idea, and the ability to bring it to life, I don't know.
@johnfromberkeley : I have lots of friends who are iOS (and Android etc) devs. Unfortunately that doesn't make them good, or even interested, in audio within apps. Several of them work in small shops that need a payment guarantee, and as rick says, they are often very very busy indeed already.
Instead, you could go about it the other way around: check out who hangs on http://audiokit.io/ and perhaps even better, go to their Github and do reverse detective work on the people who has forked the code, over here: https://github.com/audiokit/. All of those people are quite guaranteed to have dev skills and an interest in doing music apps.
AudioKit looks awesome by the way. It should be noted that AudioKit 3 is in beta. They have even open-sourced their Analog Synth X, which you can get for free in the AppStore (and which is another AU synth btw, for those interested) and you can also download the code for free (MIT license) so that anyone interested in making iOS apps can get a working code base as a starting point to play around with. Check it out here: https://github.com/audiokit/AudioKit/tree/master/Examples/iOS
Analogue Synth X doesn't show up in GB as an AU instrument.
Ah, sorry, forgot to mention you need an Air or higher. They haven't spent time on making that as an instrument per se, with all bells and whistles, it is mainly an example of how you can code in AudioKit and also download the source code for that app. They are aware of that iPad4 (Retina) and below have issues and are looking into it, but their main priority is AudioKit 3 I would guess.
On my iPad Pro it shows up as an AU instrument in both Garageband and MultitrackStudio.
I have an air2 and it doesn't show up in either.....
Sorry @BiancaNeve , I spoke too soon. I actually saw iSEM and KQ (which I mistook for AS X) within Garageband/MTS, not Analog Synth X.
I have asked one of the devs (via FB) if it is only AudioKit that is AU friendly/prepared in general, but not Analog Synth X (as of yet).
These are great ideas.
re: "Payment Guarantee"... that's the idea. I'm LOOKING to pay either for my own idea, or fund someone else's good idea.
Though I get the general request, specific to your own idea, you might consider trying to define it in as much detail as possible first (basic overview, and a list of ranked 'requirements' works well). Then you could show a few developers a 'blueprint' of what you want which would make it a lot easier to talk money.
If you're willing to share your product idea, maybe you could do it via some online tool that allows people to collaborate on features/requirements and perhaps vote on them. That might work as some proxy for interest and it could create a small community of co-funders.
https://www.yutongo.com/ looks interesting for collaborative ideation.
@hellquist Thanks for that tip. AudioKit 3 looks amazing! And fun to mess with.
Sounds like John is looking to open source his cash. Kind of be a fairy godmother to a dev with a track record and a good idea. (I could be totally wrong though)
Basically an "angel" (or pre-angel). I'm most interested in working on something cool. It's not about ownership or making money as much it is about creating value in the iOS music community.
if that is the case then I think the best thing may be to find a way to just simply communicate the idea as best as possible and just see where it may go. Even if other people adopt the seed or idea into their apps that is not a bad thing. I started doing a little music app design myself but without any real expectation of how it may get made but I am trying to keep the idea as grounded as I can. i am just sketching it now and may do a little video in After Effects to illustrate it.
@AudioGus There are loads of free iOS prototyping apps/web services. Just put "ios prototyping" into your favorite Skynet portal.
I have used a couple for game development and find them great for general FE / UI flow but for most stuff i just use After Effects. Currently the idea is more of a patterning/borderlands kind of thing.
