MODSTEP: Tutorial? (internal instruments, MIDI setting, app connecting)
Any links to good tutorials on MODSTEP?
Or advice.
I want to know about the internal instruments.
Also, I can't get MIDI keyboard to play notes on in the app. I can program a couple but not play live.
Overall, I just would like a comprehensive start up vid. Not one with 4 different external synths or some such complexity.
I want a MODSTEP for dummies tutorial.
I think I wasted my money. I just keep using Genome or MIDISEQUENCER as I do.
As CREAM also sits by not being used. 2 impulse purchases I have not really used. Instead believed the hype and just bought. Fail on my part I guess.
Thanks

That's ok - it's happened to the best of us more than a time or two. I'm kinda in the same boat - but also haven't spent too much time in Modstep. I think it's still a little green around the edges - and still temperamental .. So I'm holding off putting time into it until a further update or two
Sounds good!
I will check back with the app this summer.......................
there is an update in the works already - so maybe check back sooner! like in a few weeks

@RustiK
Have you seen the Modstep YouTube stuff?
There are vids from earlier betas posted there that helped me: the sequencer stuff in particular. Advice wise I don't have much, except in terms of using it as a clip launching composition tool. I'm using it strictly with indevice synths and drum machines (the way I'd been using genome, via Audiobus into MTS).
Modstep works better for me for that use-case, the IAA cuts out the extra steps, and Modstep's inapp recording means I don't have to sync MTS with the sequencer and the synths, I just play with clips till I get something I like, then record and ship the stems. The feature that allows multi outs via AB is something I thought I wanted, like Genome, but turns out it's not necessary given inapp stem recording and export.
I was looking for a DAW on iOS like Bitwig or Ableton Live, because I find clip launch more accessible than timeline. Electrify NXT, was one way, the Genome deal was another. Modstep has become the solution, it's like the clip launch view in Bitwig or Live, with a timeline DAW (Auria, MTS) as the second page. With iOS limitations as they are, all in one doesn't exist, and running both at once via AB overtaxes cpu (that's why I was using MTS with Genome, minimal draw). Using stem export, you can use as cpu-hungry a DAW as you want.
The team has promised new videos, the current beta has a built in link to YouTube, which makes me think more videos are in the works. At present the manual covers inapp instruments well. Midi for me is IAA, and the rule of thumb there is do less. Some apps work better in IAA than others, iElectribe is smoothest drum synth for example...
Appreciate your feedback.
I am actually just doing alot of stuff by sending my loops/clips I make to LP-5 of Launchpad.
Frankly, I love the fx on Launchpad.
I then run one or both of them as individual channels along side another synth app and drum app. The clips being my "melody, background, rhythm, pad one shots" stuff. The synth I have loaded is the "lead synth" and same for that drum app.
I am doing this through AUM. Can't get into the details of final steps yet.
I also am using a diff set up in Audiobus with similar results. It's with this in the input slot:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/samples/id601939295?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4
I load it with samples and loops I have worked on with the above set up in phase 1.
I then also load 2 synths and a drum app. Genereally try to keep low CPU stuff to help it all chugg along. Zed, Animoog, and TF7 current MVPs. That doesn't change much except for NAVE, BASSLINE, ADDICTIVE, and/or MAGELLEN. I love having more than 1 sound coming for each synth. Via ARP or Recorder and LIVE PORTION. ACtually tripling the output and in total almost 8 channels of live music at once. 4 total chains in Audiobus.
Generally this set up will go directly into DAW.
Honestly, I really don't use much multi sequencer stuff. I prefer make loops prior and trigger them as I play. It is purely stylistic on my part.
I do like MIDIlStep and MIDILFO, along with occasional MIDI SEQ or GENOME. More the exception rather than rule.
More times then not I use sequencers when doing patch/preset creation work so I have a consistent note duration, velocity, and key.
Question, can I load samples into FUNKBOX?
Like DIODE or PATTERNING, where I can load my own sample into slot?
I can't find it.
FunBox uses General Pasteboard for importing samples.
So it's one copy-operation per sample.
First create a new Drumset (on the same screen where you select a drum box).
Select the drum box you'd like to edit and press tweak.
Use the bottom right arrows to scroll to 'User' and press the 'Audio Pasteboard' 'chip-icon' to import the sample that is in the general pasteboard.
That's all there is to it
Gracias mi hermano
Nemas problemas, btw. does the 'Samples' app you mention support iCloud Drive/iOS-Filepicker for importing/exporting samples? It looks clean and simple and is probably pretty new as i've not seen it before?!
The info regarding the '+PRO' only mentions Looping, Trim, AudioCopy/AudioPaste and iTunes.
Also there seems to be no option for monitoring the input when recording using external sources.
If it's a brand new apps, it's very good first effort
The latest update that has hit the store today includes tweaks to the way you setup your midi devices that may help you, I think the default is now all midi inputs on instead of off.
I've downloaded it but not tried it yet, that is for later this evening, so cannot be more helpful until then.
It sounds like you are aiming at a similar setup to my own target, and I really believe that once you get the hang of it, ModStep will fit very nicely into what you are doing. I would make some vids myself but do not have the ability to screen cap or video in any sort of useable quality.
Thanks Andy.
I saw update this am. I will need to look into it.
I will check it out for you regarding samples.
It is CLEAN and EASY to use. Super low CPU and easy on the eyes.
I use Audiocopy option, however, there is a "file folder" icon also. I am not sure exactly what that is for. I will check for you tonight.
Hi guys.
I'm also having an issue getting modstep to sound external midi on an internal synth.
My controller is being recognised by Modstep as it flashes on incoming midi data. The midi channels are set to match too.
Not quite sure what is missing. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT - Solved!... 'Arming' the track was my missing step.
