Link - start/stop "linked" apps?
So I've downloaded Ableton Live Lite 9.6, which I got as an free extra when getting Gadget, just to try out the Link connection between my MacBookPro and my iPad/iPhone. It works like magic, on an almost spooky level, which is great.
However, there is a lot of tapping/clicking happening to get something going, so to my question:
What would be the best way to start or stop (selected/specific) apps at the same time whilst still being Link synced?
Right now, if I stop one, the others continue, and that is often fine and wished for result. For some things though I could imagine it would be helpful if I could, say, tick a box in an app that says "receive start/stop" so I could sync them going on/off.

yeah this is THE next option which have to be integrate in the code...
Ableton Link does not have a mechanism to start/stop another app....
One of the developers on this forum (loop tree or group the loop, can't remember) mentioned introducing a Link slave option but not exactly sure how that was supposed to work.
I can see myself staying on my current non-link set up for quite some time exactly for this reason. Stuff just works. I have it all on one device though.
You can do it via Audiobus! Open the apps there and the Audiobus transport control will start all the Linked apps at once.
...no midi (midi learn) implementation so have to focus very hard to press that little square on the screen when playing live.
Turn midi off I think? Just run link only?
Haven't tested, and the AudioBus route is a good one for the device(s) meaning I only have to time a computer click and a device "touch", but could I possibly/instead at the same time send clock start/stop via midi to Ableton on computer (or vice versa)? Hmm...will have to experiment a bit with this...:)
One app which doesn't start/stop with the AB control bar is FingerPro Bassline.
Good point, Midi is 30 years old and has the ability to start and stop things together.
The audiobus start/stop button only works locally, on the iPhone/iPad, and the apps that are loaded into it. I understand it simply works in the way that if an app has a play and stop button, the audiobus play/stop button pushes it remotely, Link or not. Pretty fine solution for the iOS world, but doesn't solve any problems with using Link with multiple devices (computer and iThing).
To get that to work you'd need something weird, like send a Midi start/stop message from the master, but in the slave, not use MIDI clock (because clock is coming from Link, which is much better) whilst paying attention to the midi start/stop messages.
Be nice if Link had that built in, but then it would no longer be "so simple, it just works".
But as far as I can gather there is no Master/slave in Link.
I like how IAA transport works. Either program will start or stop the parade. There is trust between the apps, so no need for one to be the master.
I guess link is cool for functioning in a way where one program CAN stop and shut up without the others stopping. To really work nicely, you'd ideally always have two start/stop buttons in every program, the local start/stop, and global. Audiobus definitely works as the global, on one iDevice, it would be outstanding if it could extend its reach to other connected devices, and rule them all.
As designed. If you read the documentation, the idea was that Link facilitated jam sessions where anyone could join at any time and there was no master or slaves. That's a cool idea but I wonder how often it happens in reality? (There was a single thread on this forum for a get-together in NJ.)
I think it'd be smarter to have a Link master OPTION, both for start/stop and for tempo changes. Right now, I use a MIDI CC message via a Network session to start/stop apps on other devices. It works OK, but it'd be far easier if Link took over the clock and the start/stop.
Of course, I also think it'd be cool if Link transmitted key and scale info, too.
Sigh, a boy can dream.
The Audiobus Link start/stop button hasn't been working for me with Different Drummer either.
is it using the standard start/stop button or a home made one?
@Sebastian Different Drummer doesn't have any Audiobus start/stop button, you have to go into Different Drummer to start and stop it. I'll have to contact the developer of Different Drummer to request this functionality.
Oddly DD has a start button in AB remote but AB doesn't seem to have
It's really a question if it's part of the standard Audiobus connection panel. If it's there, the global trigger is going to work.
Peter, the Different Drummer developer intends to add an Audiobus button so it can start/stop sync with Audiobus Link button.
Cool.
Great....thanks for looking into it @Paul.
@Sebastian
Hm, the play/ pause button is only in the ab side panel but not in the audiobus UI.
Why?
I want to launch all apps and press play without jumping around ...
Audiobus 3?
Just curious about the screenshot: On the Apefillter icon it looks like it's link enabled. Is that a beta ?
gee, you people see everything, lol
yes it is
YES YES YES!!!
