Why can't I select GarageBand as an input?
It's great that I can input my DAW (I use Auria) into garage band but it would be even better to use GarageBand as an input into my daw. Why is that not an option? I'd love to make drum tracks on GarageBand and then use them in a multitrack recording in my daw.

Because Apple can be a douche sometimes.
They want you to use GarageBand as the destination for music, and they're willing to limit your options to force you into that. Still a great app. Just crippled slightly by some stupid decisions.
For the record this is the technical answer I have printed on the back of my business card and hand out to folks as needed...
GarageBand still feels like a toy, and crap like that doesn't help me change my opinions. Yes, you can record decent stuff in it, but instead of participating fully like all the devs out there trying to make a living, Apple tries to stick it to everyone.

Exactly why although having some new features I never bothered re installing Garbage band for this reason. It never fails to disappoint and ends up being deleted when I need space for apps I might actually like and use.
What's great is that we're the benign dictator of ourselves and everyone can chose (for themselves) what to keep and what to kill....
In GB, you can solo the track you want to use in your DAW, go to the “My Songs” screen, and share the file. Choose “Open in…” to export it to Auria Pro, AudioShare, etc…
Considering Apple’s giving GarageBand away for free, we’re lucky it can even record audio from other apps. I can’t read their minds, but GB is probably aimed at general iOS users. They might be limiting it intentionally for some reason, or just haven’t gotten around to making it more functional. If you don’t want to use the free product, my bet is that Apple isn’t going to lose sleep over it.
addendum: I just thought---I guess GB isn't free for new users? Does it come with new iPads? I forget. I just consider it free because the upgrade was free.
I know garage band is nothing I would loose sleep over! Good point! And though I find it to not be useful for my needs it is very good that apple makes it free for those just starting out or who have other uses for it. I used to use it before purchasing other options.
I really like GB for what it does, and in fact it’s an amazing app. I’m surprised when people say it’s not even worth keeping on their device. But if they don’t use the features…
Not really surprising given the other options available and how space is so much of an issue to many iOS users. If I had unlimited space and wanted to constantly have to update my operating system to use those features I think many more of us would have it I am fairly sure. I know I might.
I haven’t even tried many of the apps available. GB is very cool to me for some of its features and sounds (and the projects open in Logic.) Maybe there are better options out there. I guess it shows how versatile the iOS music app world is if some people can just toss GB aside. I think Apple is making a lot of people happy with Garageband, but it’s apparently not for everyone.
Garageband is second only to Auria Pro IMHO. It has the best piano roll, it has the second best selection of instruments (nothing beats Auria's Lyra and the Twins), it has the Drummer, which is amazing (hope they include MIDI export someday), the smart instruments are superb and a great songwritting tool. The strings, specially, are more inspiring then most Desktop solutions. There are also nicely sounding amp simulators for guitar and bass and the best built-in tuner on iOS. Oh, there is a sampler too, not as powerful as SAMPLR but quite usable.

The only thing not done with Garageband was the mastering, which was done on OSX.

I use GB for two things,
1: getting ideas down quickly for future use but I've learnt not to try and develop them too far in GB. It's a great app for all the reasons stated but for me it falls down at the mixing stage. A simple switch to remove or reduce the bass drum from the reverb would be good for a start. For an app with so many 'front end' options available, the 'back end' is a bit too basic.
2: it's the only way I have of seeing AU implementation at present. I'm wondering if the isem representation with the horizontal faders is how all AU's will look. Hats off to Arturia for getting it out there so quickly but I can't help thinking that vertical faders would work better given the horizontal scrolling action.
As an Auria pro user with AU on the roadmap, GB serves a purpose at present and it's good fun.
Indeed, mixing with Garageband is an experience I Don't intend to ever repeat. Unless it get updated with at least a basic mixer. Mixing the first two songs I posted above (the third was mixed on OSX) was really a pain.
What is great also, is when you record your little ditty into Music Memos, have it add drums and bass and send it to GB, the drums are being played by Drummer, and thus are endlessly manageable for further refining. Finally I export to Logic, where everything gets rounded up. Great and easy workflow, IMHO...

I find GarageBand a scratchpad for ideas, but pretty useless for mixing anything beyond a few simple tracks. Like many others here, I will surely delete it again when I need the space.
To add to my last comment. Link is making my need for a scratch pad less important. I often not get ideas running by jamming a few tracks Linked together and then go off to Auria to polish anything I think my jamming buddies will find interesting.

I've become a nibbler. I have my iPad set up just for music and right beside it, a PS vita for games and a WiiU controller for playing films. No wonder I never get any music ideas finished.
Maybe that's not what I'm after though, maybe the chase is better than the catch for myself musically?

i'm thinking of getting a refurbed mini 2 128GB wifi as a dedicated game device. games take up so much space on my music-making ipad.
I'm still kicking myself for getting a 64gb instead of 128gb.
If I was to use my iPad to its full for music making, music listening, film watching while away and game playing, well then even a 512gb would struggle
