LFO vs OSC? – Basics – haQ attaQ 118

LFO vs OSC, might sound like weird topic but then again, it’s not. These two waveform generators are basically doing the same thing, but at different speeds. Plus they’re obviously used for completely different things too.

I am using Propellerheads Thor in this video, but the concept of an LFO is the same in any synthesizer.

  • Thanks for the Video.

iOS apps with 'Audio-Rate' LFOs are unfortunately a rarity.

iMini uses OSC3 as LFO and since it's a 'regular' OSC it can go as high as needed, but the 'depth' is limited but feeding OSC3 to the output when it's running at very low or audible speeds adds a very nice 'rumble' to the sound.

'Dagger' from BeepStreet will be a much welcomed addition once it's available for iOS.

For some strange reason most of the iOS synth and even modular apps do not allow usage of regular VCO/OSC as 'modulators' and limit the LFO's to around 20hz.

I'm guessing this is due to the extra processing needed that would tax the CPU too much. It should be possible to cure with some optimisation as apps such as SunVox can do audio-rate modulation without too much hassle.

High speed LFO's are very useable for sound-design when making ring-mod, fm and wave-shape type of sounds :)

    Yep!
Virsyn apps are the best when it comes to modulations on iOS. The only apps with proper MSEG (multi-stage-envelope-generators) and the LFO's in Tera goes up to an awesome 600+ hz and the envelopes are "snappy" too.
Mitosynth is also great for modulation and has the most intuitive and interesting part for me here. There are not much synths out there (even in desktop world) where you can use a limitless number of LFO's and you can modulate parts of the LFO's too in endless layers. 100 Hz LFO's are also usable. The problem is that fast modulations of things like the tube resonator results often in clicks and little cracks etc.
What i miss in most iOS apps is modulation of all FX, including delay and reverb. Thor can do it as one of a few (or the only in iOS?).
IOS apps are more made for real time performance rather than wild modulation routings (Bazille, Zebra, Falcon....).
I have some hopes for the next synth in NanoStudio 2 to add some new life here because iOS needs really a great hybrid-synth like Alchemy.
Would be great if Synthmaster would be a full synth for iOS too.

Not weird, thank's! It's an interesting theme. Some years ago i didn't know what an OSC or LFO is :#

  • Very helpful, thank you!
