Midiflow can generally fix any MIDI issues I have on iOS. Wouldn't fix issue that Launchpad must be master though. I wonder why Novation didn't allow Launchpad to be slave, a shame.

It is due to the fact that in order to be a slave it would have to do real time time stretching which is very processor hungry, and that would take away a lot of the ability to mess with the audio output via the effects which for me is one of Launchpads best features.

Good point, never thought of that.

  • Bought the IAP, but being a bit of a MIDIOT, I can't get it to work with Gadget. I'm using the MIDI link app, if someone would care to list the in / out connections between the apps I'd be appreciative.

@josefdavid has that setup working, perhaps he can help you :)

Switch to midi to link in✅ (midi to link sync)
Have launchpad and gadget loaded in audiobus. Allow midi clock in LP
To control midi link sync as an option in that menu. Go to midi link sync and enable sync. With launchpad as midi signal.
I had to go back and forth after starting the clock in LP(hit the midi sync start button)Keep both apps playing so that you may hear the syncing happen.

    Hope this helps.

  • IAP purchased but I must be missing something. Is LP supposed to be sending clock to other apps? If LP has a 128bpm should this be matched in the apps I connect with?

That is what is supposed to happen yes, it won't change the selected tempo within the app but the playback should be at the same tempo as in LP

  • @AndyPlankton Thanks. However I wasn't having success syncing LP to either Patterning or DM1.

I shouldn't require a 3rd party app in the middle, is that right?

I'll have to do some more detailed testing but this is not very intuitive and I didn't gain much from the video either.

I'm sure this is 90% user error though.

  • We just checked and patterning is syncing just fine to launchpad. Just make sure you check patterning is in 'input midi receive sync' settings, and then there is a small > button in patterning midi sync setup that will allow you select Launchpad as a sync source. Good luck!

  • So if I have a bpm of 128 in Launchpad and a bpm of 90 in Patterning, will following the above then make Patterning match the 128bpm of Launchpad?

    Thanks

  • I found that patterning had Link enabled on startup. Switching this off enabled me to sync LP to patterning. Now the fun begins, thanks.

  • omg can we please have some panning?

  • @josefdavid

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get things working. Any chance of posting a couple of screen shots ?

  • @Igneous1

So I like to jam at night sorry it's blurry.

Cheers, I've got it working now !

Any timeline on iPhone version midi update?

  • edited February 2016

I've had a whole bunch of fun and a completely lost 4 days thanks to Launchpad and MIDI Sync. I got a Launchpad II controller and they released the MIDI Sync at the same time....and to top it all a Remix competition to win a Circuit...I've been totally missing from the planet for the last few days while using Launchpad alongside Patterning , I load up a session in Launchpad, load up patterning, set up the sync options, have patterning in foreground and launchpad app in background (being controlled by launchpad controller), works like a dream.

I now want to transfer all of my old material into Launchpad for live performance, but I am still going to hold off, as much fun as it is, there really does need to be some better session file management, I filled up my 16GB iPad Mini 2 pretty quickly and have no way of saving my work off of the device to enable me to do more ? I can save my output by saving recordings to DropBox, I can save my loops in DropBox on the way into Launchpad, but there is no way of saving the session file off of the device. And I cannot remove loops without them being removed from the sessions that use them.

@Launchpadforios Please can this be made a priority for the next update ? The addition of the MIDI Sync means this would become a central part of my performance setup, but without the ability to move sessions and samples on and off the device I cannot commit to using it as I am too limited by the storage on my device.

MIDI Sync really is a great addition to Launchpad B)

  • Apple wants you to upgrade to an iPad with more storage! Why else avoid an SD slot?

  • @ghostly606 a big part of iOS from the beginning has been the app sand boxing approach which is very different from a traditional OS and having an SD slot you can access as with a traditional OS would break sand boxing. The addition of the Wallet to iOS has only made Apple more wary than ever about having a secure device. The camera connection kit does allow you to access an SD card but only recognizes media files.

There is no doubt that Apple makes a lot of money on the difference between what it costs them to create iOS devices with more storage versus what they charge.

This may be very true of Apple, but they have already had my money,

Novation on the other hand are driven by making music and enabling people to make music, yes they want to make a profit also, but their reason for being is a passion for music production, and their ears are far more open :)

Are you sure the LaunchPad app can run in the background when using the LaunchPad controller? That would be great if it is true.

I believe it needs to be on Audiobus to run in background, I may be wrong.

Works fine with everything running stand alone, no AB needed

If I try and sync gadget, then Gadget plays in double time which is a shame.

We just checked and confirm this sometimes happens, we're looking into it!

This is happening consistently for me, can I give you any settings or info that would help you track this down ?

  • I have now tried what @josefdavid suggested with using MIDI Link sync and Gadget syncs in time with this method, The only downside is that I cannot use the MIDI sync start/stop within Launchpad as once started with link sync, gadget continues to play as Link is still running.
But this does give me the ability to run in sync while composing loops :)
