Rumor: iPad Air 3... March 18?

http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/12/iphone-5se-ipad-air-3-march-18/

"The new iPad is also expected to include a variant of the A9 processor"

This is what I'm looking forward to. I don't have a vast, open field to set an iPad Pro in, so I can't wait to get the speed of the Pro in an Air-sized form factor!

And, I love the feel of the Pencil, though I don't know why I need it.

Pro owners: Will I notice the bump? Just curious.

  • I would like to get an Air 3 if it's coming. But more realistically I'll prob. buy a refurb air2 to accompany my air 1. We'll see.

It depends where you are coming from. I was coming from an iPad 2, and yes, it was iOS-life changing.
Pencil is just wow, from drawing to, and specially, scoring music(FIY I use Presonus Notion and it works pretty well along with hand writing).

I think you will definitely see some good refurb deals, especially on wifi. Not a bad approach.

However, the A9 chip is just so much faster:

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/11/12/ipad-pro-benchmarks/

Not to mention twice the RAM.

I also want to buy for 2 years from now, not 2 years ago.

Touch choice for sure, as on the downstroke, a refurbished Air 2 could be a very good value.

  • That A9X chip is absolutely worth waiting for, even if you have to let the dust settle on the new models to pick up a refurb. Those benchmarks tell the story.

  • will Air3 get A9 or A9X? If it is A9X I may be in the market

  • Some of those benchmarks, put the A8X (current air 2) close to the iPhone 6s with its A9.

  • I think i better buy some hardware

  • You don't need a vast field for a Pro, hey its only about the size of an A4 pad.(but not as thick...). I also went from an iPad 2 to the Pro, so yes, I certainly noticed the difference! And the pencil works great if you do any art stuff, especially Procreate.

i was very impressed when i used it in the store.

now, were is my Newton MessagePad?

    This.

  • That's the key to me: iPad size and Apple Pencil accuracy.

The iPhone 6S+ is about the same size ;)

  • ...but not the same price.

Yes, that is what stopped me buying a Pro. Okay, we all know that anything Apple is going to be quite expensive. But, there are limits. So, instead, I got myself a refurb Mac Mini with a new 512 SSD and 16gb RAM from Hoxton Macs, mainly to begin migrating from my Windows 7 64-bit system (don't fancy Windows 10) and to get busy with Logic Pro X. So far, I'm really pleased.

Yeah how you getting on with your Mini. Are you using the iPad to control the Mini, or as a sound source?

  • There are many times Logic is not logical, I definitely agree with that.

Cool beans, is the rumor of 4 speakers a good thing? Do more speakers use more battery?

I'm of mixed mind about 4 speakers. Sure, if all you've got is your ipad, and you want to play a movie or presentation (or even a song) for a small group of people, that's cool. It's good to have the best possible sound.

But for the purpose of music making, this doesn't interest me much beyond basic play/composition.

I like the idea of the speakers as a consumer. As a musician, they don't interest me as much as NOT getting rid of the headphone jack!

  • Good points @johnfromberkeley

    agreed on allpoints

  • I'm more than happy with my Air 1 and seeing as there isn't really any software that pushes it to breaking point I'm not really interested in an Air upgrade. That saying, 3D Touch is a must but isn't looking likely for Air 3 so here is hoping it'll be on Air 4 as iPad Pro is a mini MacBook which isn't really a device on the go like Air and the rest of the Apple smart devices so Pro is a no go for me should 3D Touch make it to Pro 2

Not actually the best, just the loudest. On iPad pro they clip pretty easily.
Being most of the time with some painful headphones havin the chance to actually hear something without them in stereo is a ear saver.

  • If the rumors are true that the next iPad will be based on the Pro, rather than the Air, I wonder what it will be called. Pro mini will be confusing with the smaller form factor, so I'm casting my vote for iPad Pro midi.

    LOLZ. iPad Air Pro?

    Newton 3000

  • I'd be happy to just call it mine, but that ain't likely.

  • I'd guess the Air brand will disappear. Simply iPad from now on.

  • One thing I don't like about the air2 is stylus support, apple pencil looks fantastic, like using a stylus for things like automation, think I'll sit this gen out tho.

I hate to rub it in, but I can't wait. The Pro specs were enticing; I just couldn't buy a tablet the size of a throw rug.

But, especially with the way RAM improves multi-app performance, I won't be able to resist.

I'd been planning on buying a refurbished iPad min 2 to use for games, but I think my old air1 will serve that purpose.

  • I'm still holding out for the terabyte model.

  • throw rug, haha ^

    Are they predicting 4GB ram?
