Bias Amp

PIcked up Bias FX, trying to settle on a modeller. Love it, but was disappointed that it doesn't appear on the iPhone. Was looking at Bias Amp. They are two different version, one for iPad, one for iPhone, so purchasing one doesn't give you the other. But I was wondering how people felt about the product. I don't really need to get reverb / chorus / etc., on the iPhone that much. I want to get some good tones, clean, distorted, etc., and I'm wondering if I can get those nice tones solely with bias amp.

Comments

  • I guess I have never just used bias amp. used it with jamup first, and now bias fx. just bias amp always made me feel like, or it sounds like something is missing. i can really get the sounds i need with both. that is just my opinion.

  • That's what I'm wondering, @High5denied. But, for recording, it might be okay. I need to get tone, then add on effects.

  • I think BIAS sound good on its own and it has the best clean tone of any of the apps. It can do clean and loud at the same time, which is something most can't do. ToneStack is another alternative and you can use it on both iPhone and iPad. It's best known for its multitude of fx (iap for most of them), but its amps sound OK too. If I was going to get one just based on the amps (not fx) I'd go with BIAS. If I was just going to get one all-around, I'd get ToneStack. Luckily I have both.

@rickwaugh I know you're an Auria user, and Auria's IAPs can cover a lot of the effects a guitar player needs. I can't resist these guitar apps and have just about all of them, and I do use them all. I like Bias Amps a lot, and I've downloaded some really nice user presets from their Tone Cloud, which really opened up a lot of possibilities. Combine that with what you already have in Auria, and you may be covered. What sorts of effects are looking to use?

I get a ton of use from Bias Amps, but I'm very happy to not be tied to it. ToneStack, Bias FX, THM Overloud, Flying Haggis, AmpKit, and AmpliTube have all suited songs for me. Wait for sales, and get as many as you can.

  • Agree 100% with @MrNezumi. Tonestack is an OK all-in-one but I opt for the Bias amps just about every time.

  • @supanorton, that's my thoughts, too. I have Saturn and Timeless. I'm looking for tone, as that's where I've fallen down in the past.

Thanks, @MrNezumi and @lukesleepwalker. I really like Bias FX. I have Amplitube and a bunch of IAPs, and I have FlyingHaggis as well. Amplitube is better than I thought it was, and I have been using it some. I have only mucked with the free versions of JamUp and ToneStack - they're decent, but I like Bias better.

    I think it's Bias Amp.

  • Does anyone know, if I build an amp in the iPhone, can I export it to the iPad?

Easiest way to do that would be to load it onto the cloud. Then find it and load it onto your ipad.

I'm the opposite. Except for the clean tones being too quiet I always turn on Tonestack. Plus it helps that I can run it on my iPhone or iPad pretty much the same way.

I am thankful that we have multiple options and a chance to have a debate. I do have Bias (not FX) and per your suggestion and others I have kept it loaded just for its clean tones, which make my metal-oriented Ibanez RG570 sound as good as it can get without distortion.

I play with mostly clean to slightly breaking up tones so you probably can understand my preference for BIAS. I've tried a compressor to get tonestack sounding better with cleans but it takes away the dynamics and feel that I get with cleans in Bias. Higher gain stuff works good in TS.

  • So, I bought it for the iPhone. Don't know if it was on sale or, but it was less than half what it costs on the iPad, 9.99 USD. Sounds fantastic, from clean and acoustic up to insane metal. Kind of wish I had bought this instead of FX on the iPad. Not that there is anything wrong with FX. I think I might end up buying Bias Amp on the iPad as well. I can't upload Amp models to the cloud and download them to the iPad without Bias Amp.

All my favorite patches started with someone else's upload to the cloud. Playing with the cabinet/mic can yield huge changes, obviously. But I've found that tinkering with the transformer is what gives me that presence I'm looking for with cleans especially.

I think that's part of their brilliance. I love browsing for patches.

  • @rickwaugh enjoy it. It really is a great app. It's been a little finicky with IAA, but it usually works well with AudioBus, even if you have to open Bias first sometimes.
