DrumJamm app

I've seen a few videos with people using this app to make tracks - but most of them have had more of a world music or ambient type flavour to them. Is Drumjamm capable of making drum beats for any/all types of music - hip-hop, club/dance type beats, etc. I was torn between this and DM1 - went with DM1 but I'm not feeling the magic ... probably just need to play with it more... but if anybody wants to chime in with their thoughts on Drumjamm I'm listening..

Comments

  • Drumjam is mainly percussion instruments.

  • DrumJam is good, though not nearly as good as ThumbJam in my opinion, but a few weeks ago the dev talked about further developing DrumJam into a great drum app with many new features, I'm not sure how far a long that is or when it can be expected. Which leads me to this...

I personally feel that, though there are several good drum apps on the market, this area is still open game for any developers. There is not one single drum app that stands head and shoulders above the rest, they all lack something. There is no great one, I've heard (and hope) that a great drum app is in the works somewhere but still yet to see/hear any further. I wish someone would take and combine all the top features of the decent drum apps and make "a killer app" haha

DM1 is a great all around drum app, easy to import samples and make your own kits, fx w/ automation, all around simple. Despite all that something just seems to lack from it sometimes.

Impaktor is great, fun, and useable, but not your "typical" drum machine/app

Stochastik makes nice dynamic beats with its probability note trigger, meaning you make a sequence and for each hit you select the probability that it will trigger. This means the beat will always vary which is nice and it does a good job at it. It is expected to get Audiobus within the next month.

FunkBox has great MIDI implementation but lacks something...

iElectribe is a remake of KORG's Electribe and it fun.

iMaschine is great but its only for the iPhone and they basically stopped developing it (though they continue to add sample packs to buy...)

iMPC has great sounds but Akai won't let it be the awesome app it should be.

DrumJam has a top section that reminds me of Garagebands drums, with the grid you drag and drop instruments on. The bottom section is where it shines with "rolls", idk how to explain it but check YouTube video.

There are some nice drum loop apps that offer "live" played drum loops. Drum Loops HD and Drum Beats +.

Theres others like DrumTrackHD (no recent updates), EasyBeats2 is decent, Different Drummer is definitely different, Molten, Beat-Machine (similar to iMPC), MoDrum, DrumsXD, Electrify.

No one seems to just blow the others away, like we see with some synths, effects, and DAW's.

Hope this helps, sorry its so long.

  • Beatmaker 2 is really good for creating your own kits IMHO

  • @JMSexton Good summary of drum apps.

  • Yea I thought about throwing BM2 in but then thought I'd have to add things like ReBirth, Bleep!BOX, FL Studio, and etc

  • Remember Stochastic gets updated this month with AB support and more.

    @Mgm4871 I said that silly!

  • Lol. You didn't say "and more"

  • Great overview @jmsexton! Funny, something that bugs me about dm1 is how labor intensive it is to create custom kits. I think I'm comparing it to Nanostudio though where you can drag a set of samples in from your computer and have a kit going on the quick.

That and no ability to +/- offset steps (that I'm aware of) hold dm1 back for me. Otherwise, I love it. Actually, I don't really like apps that autosave like that (same as GarageBand). Sometimes I load something and it goes somewhere completely new. When I save it as something new I expect the original to remain unchanged.

  • Program's like this do make the Nanostudio drum process cooler! ;) http://luktown.org/random/trg/

  • @Halftone it depends what you are trying to achieve as @JMSexton has given in his overview there are lots of great apps available to make some great beats - especially if you put your groove through something like Turnado. You get pretty good dance grooves from Modrum and I find BM2 / Nanostudio give the most natural feel. Also don't forget FL Studio for dance stuff.

  • JMS and others, what would your ideal drum app be...key feature/abilities.
If we come up with a feature list, maybe someone will make it.

    Pattern Sequencer.
    24 instruments/multisample slots.
    User loadable velocity mapped multisamples.
Fullly configurable pattern lengths, eg 3 to 64 beats. Not just a choice of time sigs.
Beat subdivision like Molten, 2 to 16 optional subdivisions?
Probability setting for each beat/subdivision. (Play/omit).
Velocity level setting for each beat. Perhaps using a popup 'draw graphic level' track?
Random velocity variance with configurable range per instrument/part.
Humanising timing randomiser with configurable amount and bias (ahead of beat/on beat/behind beat) per instrument/part.
Play mode loops and allows live changes of pattern.
    Save/save as/load pattern.

    Song Sequencer.
Arrange multiple patterns to form songs.
Master velocity level track. Again, draw graphic level.
Option to record live master velocity control changes.
    BPM sequencing for tempo changes.
BPM change interpolation between values for gradual changes.
Option to record live BPM control changes.
    Save/save as/load song.

    Live performance pads (iPad).
Should be rectangular, with velocity mapped along long axis.
Ideally, two rows of 6 pads in landscape mode, with an extra bar along the bottom.
3 rows of 4 in portrait, plus bottom bar.
Each of the 12 pad's multisamples should be user loadable.
Bottom bar switches to a second set of 12 multisamples.

    Working MIDI clock/sync.
    Audiobus.

    Brain tired now...

  • @PaulB ...well then, get on it!!! Let us know when its done. Oh and would you like fries with that?

    @mgmg4871 Touché! Lol

Yea if you wanted you could throw BM2, NS, iPolysix etc etc in too but I tried to stick to just drum apps....though I do love BM2 & NS, they are really well done. Too many apps try to be the all-in-one instead of focusing on one particular area, I think this is part of the problem. I'll tell you what though, and I'm going way back with this, I think DrumTrackHD was ahead of its time, its packed with features and depth but the thing is as stable as my 80 year old grandfather and they stopped developing it forever ago...a shame.

  • Paul,one last request.
Please copy/paste your suggestion into a new thread with a relevant title for devs to see.
Be a shame if it got buried and forgotten about.

  • @JMSexton If I had a Mac, I'd be on it.

    @commonstookie Done.

  • +1 for DrumTrackHD I used to get some great beats from that thing but couldn't stand the bugs any longer:-(

I like the sheer fun of Drums by Asrodot. Satisfies my need to bang out a beat with my fingers. No sequencer or midi or user samples so the bad timing is strictly up to me to fix. The undemarcated, no pads, surface adds to the thrill of finding a sound.. And it's cheap.

  • Beat Machine updated.

  • +2 for DrumTrackHD. Awesome step control, including offset. Nice kits, nice song editing.

Ha @spookyzoo. I really need to update that thing.

  • Beat Machine is a knock off of IMPC. All IMPC samples can be used in Beat Machine also.
