Question for you Gadget vets.
Just picked this up for iPhone, haven't dug into yet besides tooling around the interface, as I am at work. If I plan on recording most of my parts live, what's the best way to do this? Disable looping? Keep my finger on the function - delete notes option as I try different takes? What are your experiences?
Comments
The Undo function will delete the last take. Loop On, Record-Undo-Wait for bar 1-Record-Undo-etc.... That seems to be the most optimum workflow.
Sweet. I can live with that. Didn't think about the undo. Though honestly, how cool would it be if it replaced old notes with new notes on each pass like in ids-10 or ikaossilator? Optional of course. I think this would be way more useful than audio recording and would integrate seamlessly with what's already there too. Sigh.
I got used to it. I still prefer Ableton's continuous record, or even better, Logic's takes folder option. I can dream.....
Dream I will. And email Korg I will. Anyone got any other gadget workflow tips?

oh fo sho
Highlighting the timeline bar with two fingers zooms the area between the two points e.g. tap together bar 3 and 5 to zoom in to view bars 3-5. It's quite fiddly, but I still find it more accurate than the new pinch to zoom.
Multi-tap destination bars together in the copy function to copy to multiple bars simultaneously.
Use the scene repeat feature rather than copying multiple times. ( as long you yo actually just want repeats obviously, that's a rubbish tip if you want to change anything! )
If you export to an Ableton project, also export the standard MIDI files. Then in Ableton record the song to the arrange view and match up with the MIDI. Now you can use the MIDI to replace or layer Gadget tracks with Ableton instruments, VST's etc.
Don't forget most Gadgets hide half their parameters on a secondary page!
Leave your piano roll in "select" mode unless you're editing. It's very easy, and very annoying, to add or delete notes by accident.
Embrace the automation. The gutter at the bottom of the piano roll grants access to quick and easy automation of virtually all parameters on each gadget. Get squelching those filters and mangling that pan!
Nice tips jiggly wig, thank you! In regards to the note replace looping, what I believe to be the greatest instance of a 99.9% perfect app being held back by one small feature, I will be writing a short essay on the matter that I'll post on the Korg forums this weekend. If you agree this should be an included AND OPTIONAL TO USE feature, get over there and upvote that!
Create multiple scenes (loads of them) and switch loop off. Then just start at scene 1, record, jam away and pick the best takes afterwards.
This was the breakout (literally) moment for me with Gadget....
Great tip!
Awesome! The more I get into it I can see why things work the way they do. Someone mentioned in another thread to always at least try to see an app the way the developer imagined it would be used. I broke the number one rule!
I tried the creating a bunch of scenes method but I think I'm missing something. It won't change to the next scene when recording. It just records scene 1 track 1 then stops recording?
Make sure loop isn't on....(it often seems to be
Yeah I figured out its not enough to change the loop in the function menu. You gotta select the scene and make sure the little green loop icon is off. Got it working though!
Awesome/simple idea. I've had gadget from the beginning but never really tried this way to work. Definitely need to check it out
Thanks
It works quite good
I've had an 'improvement idea' cooking for a long time now on how to seamlessly draw/edit automation over longer areas (ie. across multiple scenes) and one idea that keeps coming back is to have seamless transition between scenes when editing a pattern. (meaning it would be possible to scroll and zoom to see an area covering more than one scene).
What this would mean in practice is that when editing a pattern the length is not limited to to current scene(max 16 bars) but rather the whole project, this is as close to a 'time-line' we'd get without actually having a time-line.
The only 'drawback' to this is the fact that there is an option to 'loop' a scene multiple times...
Hopefully Gadget will get a proper Time-Line in addition to to scene approach and enable recording of 'clips' to the time-line. For this to work smoothly each 'pattern' would act as a 'clip-trigger' when recording to the time-line.
Once the Korg people start to respond to the forum-posts I'll post more as I'm far away from being out of ides regarding Gadget
They should collaborate with Ableton. That'd be the best of all possible worlds. Ableton nails "simple but powerful". (IMO)
I got some ideas as well.(though they may not be as crucial as I initially thought) Are they generally slow to respond over there? In would kind of like there to be a discussion of their mobile apps as a whole, strengths, weaknesses, the bare minimum, most bang for their buck improvements to take the apps to another level. One thing they excel at is loops and how looping can be utilized most efficiently for songwriting. It seems like a no brainer thing but when you look at the ways their implementations of looping differ from other apps and developers you can really appreciate what they do.
I like the sounds of that! I have gotten use to working with the scenes in Gadget but having an additional proper time-line would be well received. Gadget 2.1?
For sure. I've always thought Gadget has the potential to be the BEST music making app for IOS. Some improvements are still needed. Regardless, still my fav app.
Gadget is certainly poised for that and may already be some would argue. Personally though, if they ever improve ikaossilator to let users import samples to be pitched and played by the kaoss pad and per instrument volume, eq, and compression, That would be ....just ...amazing.
The smooth automation thing between scenes (@samu) is a bit fiddly right now - as you point out.
You have to either:
Record live automation of a parameter all the way through your entire track (with loop switched off)
Or
Be very careful about making sure the end value of the previous scene matches the start value you draw in in the next scene. Normally by eye.
Otherwise you get nasty jumps in a parameters at the point the scene changes.
If anyone has any better tips on how they manage it - please shout!!
Another question here,
Is there a way to delete an uploaded track from the gadget cloud? I uploaded the wrong one and people are liking it too quick. I need to get it off there, it's not good!
There has already been a news press release about the song! I think it's too late!!
Just kidding, I don't know for sure. At least your getting likes though.
Ok I think I just remove it from SoundCloud then.
Now I feel bad taking it down. I mean there's 5 people out there going to be super depressed I'm sure.
Either that or they're telling you it's good. It's always the ones we think suck that seem to be the best, and vice versa...
Recurrent element of truth here...
I use two methods together:
It's a bit fiddly, but it can be done. Listen to my 'Gadget Trance' posted here. I have 32 bars of multiple parameter automation.
Peace \/

I wish Gadget had a more precise way of editing parameter automation, with values displayed. Maybe I'm missing how to do it, but I avoid even touching pitch bend. It's too hard to get back in tune.
