Ah, I see that you are familiar with both the blue board and the black board.
Personally I've just been listening to Batida music over the last couple weeks (Principe Discos, DJ Nervosa, etc.)
https://principediscos.bandcamp.com/
Different than what's been talked about here so far, but that's the wave I'm on!
edit: ah, and the new Andy Stott video that just came out
The synths and vocals are lovely
@CalCutta Good stuff! I don't think it's far outside of this same genre... maybe a bit more "dancey" than some of the other stuff, but still interesting compositions without the dance component.
@JeffChasteen Can you hip me to the meaning of "blue board" & "black board"?
@blanksmaiden can you recommend a "sketchy" half-populated, etc. forum? this one? Haven't snorted ketamine, though I have a friend who's son got really messed up for several months. He claimed to have been doing ketamine, or maybe it was "special k"? Or, is that the same thing? Anyway... I'm at the point where I'm trying to preserve what's left of my brain chemistry balance, though... I don't mind taking it out for a little walk from time to time.
You toss out "shortwave" radios. Is that a joke, or is that a thing now? I ask because I keep having a vague kernel of an idea for a story or screenplay frequently that involves shortwave radio. I never get very far with the idea, but it persists.
I had to look up the "fuck compose..." line. It appears to be a meme out there, but I can't find it's origin.
Hadn't thought of checking out the labels of the acts I like the best as a source. Good idea. thx!
Lastly, I asked this before but I'm not sure if I got the answer. A lot of this stuff gets called EDM or IDM, but most of it isn't dancey at all. More like edgy ambient compositions from some strange film score that went off on it's own. Is there a better name for this genre?
Blue board = Noiseguide forum
Black board = Maniacs Only forum
I have received lots of helpful and invaluable information from both, but I avoid the drama that can run rampant.
Too much ketamine I imagine.
...or maybe not enough
nah, some people capture audio off of shortwave radios and use it for this sort of thing. i've heard some of it and it's really quite beautiful what they've picked up.
"fuck compose..." is a quote found in a tape release by the gerogerigegege. there is no tape inside the case, only a dried octopus tentacle and that quote. "art is over." the release has been bought by collectors for over $100 if i remember correctly
speaking of andy stott, if you ever get the chance to see him live for the love of god DO IT
I have missed him live twice, I will not make that mistake a 3rd time...
And for the shortwave thing, check out the producer Scanner (real name Robin Rimbaud), he's been at that for decades. In a more rhythmic sense, the producer Akufen likes to take short samples from the radio and make house tracks with them.
Indeed...
@blanksmaiden @CalCutta Never heard of andy stott, but I like what I'm hearing in the video. Will check him out. And the shortwave... I'm intrigued, but not so much due to the sound and how some might use it (though it sounds interesting too) I'm more interested in exploring why I keep coming back to some vague idea regarding shortwave radios and film. Maybe I'll check out some of this recording of shortwave stuff and see it that jogs the idea loose that's stuck somewhere in the recesses. thx!
I once performed in a trio where one fellow and I played Morse code oscillators and the third played shortwave radio and police scanner while cockpit aerial footage was projected on to us.
I share your fascination with short waves.
@JeffChasteen that actually sounds really cool! And, I just remembered that I have an old emergency wind-up radio that has FM/AM and an SW1 & SW2 channel. I'm guessing that's shortwave.
Used to carry it on long motorcycle trips a decade ago. It's got all this goo on the service of the plastic for some reason. Guess the petroleum chemistry is breaking down.
I'm gonna clean it up and see if I can pick up anything interesting tonight. It's got a headphone jack so maybe I can just run it straight into the iPad for recording.
I cranked it up and it sounds like it's still working. Just gotta get all this f#cking toxic avenger goo crap off of it before I have a little play.
