I am addicted to modular apps, got Analog Keys and Audulus and used them a lot initially but my interest has faded. Does Modal Pro bring anything new to the party?
Not really but for a pretty impressive, for a modular environment, preset selector slider/fader(you assign different values to modules parameters, you save in a parameter slot and you can linearly interpolate between them with a swipe) and a cool GUI.
Still couldn't figure out how to SET parameters instead of modulating.
And the modules pool is just basic.
I think modular, keeping it simple, does it better.
Same here. Tried to get in deep with the modulars, but come to the conclusion I'm too lazy
IOS Mars put up a review here. They say, among other things, that it's well-designed as a learning tool, in addition to doing actual synthesis work. http://main.iosmars.com/2014/05/20/modal-pro-review-new-modular-synthesizer-from-dango-inc/
I definitely agree for the educational side.
Thanks for linking to that. I like it as a "intro to modular" app, but it's not terribly deep. It doesn't compete with Audulus or zMors Modular for sure.
At the time I wrote that, I was hoping that the developer would continue to work on the app to bring in more modules, but it doesn't look like it's been updated since October 2014.
I figure the low cost of investment (as of the present) in Modal Pro would be worth it if I gained knowledge that I could easily carry over to Zmors Modular. Would love to check out Audulus 3 but I missed the intro sale.
Instructionally cool, but the onboard presets pop and crackle. I thought it was user error, as modular builds can be too much for the device (easy to do with all of them) but here it's the ones that they built...? Air 2, 9.newest
The already mentioned morphing between presets feature is pretty cool and I also like the polyphonic glide.
Are you getting crackles and pops? Maybe it's just me?
I haven't been using it extensively to be honest but since you asked I went through the presets and I'm getting crackles and pops with the Classic Square Lead preset. But not always, sometimes it sounds like it loads clean. All the other presets sound clean to me.
Well I caved in and bought it, for £2.99 why not eh? Will do a test re crackles etc once I have a proper play tomorrow. Seems nice and straightforward, although it would appear MIDI CC mapping is a no no sadly.
I insist that modular is probably a better buy, on the same degree of entry level modularity; even if the interface is a bit clunky you can get great sounds without getting lost(as always happens to me with Audulus, TC11, Jasuto, Reaktor and almost any deep modular)
zMors is another great one - very deep but accessible. Interoperability is currently an issue, IAA and AB is buggy but the dev is aware...
Modular is monophonic only so I don't want to compare but I do think it has the best looking UI. Flat designs can be nice but skeuomorphism when done right usually wins imo.
@firejan82
You're right, really didn't thought 'bout that. Thanks for a idea tho
