Should my new iPad Mini 4 be slower than my iPad Air?

So I decided to upgrade my iPad Air to a Mini 4, for the size and the horsepower boost. Here's the thing though : It won't run even the simplest of my audiobus sessions (3 lanes : samplr, DFX with audio, and Crystalline with audio) that ran like glass on my air without the cpu choking. Do I have some bunk hardware? Is the Mini 4 boasting more power than it has? Or is this an ios 9 thing? I'm going back to the apple store tonight to get help, but I'm pretty sure they will not know what audiobus is. What do you all think?

  • Weird. The iPad Mini 4 should be a bit faster than a first gen Air.

  • ... which you obviously know.

I have no idea what's going on unless it's an iOS version or software version issue.

  • I've scoured the internet for any complaints of a mini 4 being this slow. I think I may have a lemon? That would be a first for me.

That's funny... by all accounts I should be using my 6s for audio. smh...

  • ^ this. I was shocked when I realized my 6s could handle iMovie work better than my Air2 even. I guess the same is true of audio work.

  • I've been using the iPad mini 4 for making music since it came out last Summer and everything runs silky smooth. I just finished a 19 track Korg Gadget song with automation and effects all over the place and didn't experience a hint of slowdown. I pushed it to its limits with a few dozen tracks in Auria Pro using multiple instances of Twin 2 and Fab Filter plugins on every track. When it started getting sluggish I bounced all the tracks in place and continued. I'm using IOS 9.21.

    Peace \/

OK good to know... I mean, that's pretty much what I wanted to hear. I've done pretty big Auria Pro sessions with the Air, and after working with the mini I couldn't imagine getting away with that.

I'm pretty convinced that this particular Mini is some how buggy, or has bad ram... I really want to use it because the size is perfect for my live setup. Maybe a wipe and reinstall will do the trick?

  • Maybe there is a diagnostics app you can run for troubleshooting. Good Luck!

I got a hot date with the genius bar tonight, so I hope they will find the issue.

At worst I walk out of there with an Air 2.

Thanks for your response though, it's EXACTLY what I couldn't find on the rest of the internetz!

  • Glad to help. Let us know how it goes.

  • So I am not surprised at all, but it's software based. They ran a diagnostic at the genius bar and found there may be a "daemon" possibly somewhere in my file systems. So I did a wipe and reinstalled from my backup. It seems to have solved it. I opened up some of my more heavy hitting software and pushed it as far as I could, and it performed ... better.

He suggested that my best bet is to start the ipad as new and reinstall all my software, which I think I will do using itunes folders to back up all my work, then re-import them as needed.

To sum it up : They thought that in the process of migrating from the air to the mini there was something in the file systems the mini "didn't like". So... whatever you can take from that.

    Thanks for the input!

  • My Mini 4’s performance is pretty much comparable to my Air 2, both on iOS11.

  • Better late than never? ;)

My iPad 3 is a lemon. I bought it used so never really went after a "no, fix this for me" solution but when comparing it to real world scenarios against other iPad 2/3s, it always came up short. With a new iPad mini that felt this way, I'd definitely go visit the Apple Store.

Those benchmarks don’t translate to audio performance in my experience, my iPad Pro outperforms my iPhone X any day. I would like to see an audio bench mark performance test for all those devices, I bet the results would be very different!
