Yes, just like that. Quite unlike me I came up with that myself!
Anyone tried to get Aum -> Modstep -> recorded into an Ableton live track?
Having some performance issues with Modstep and AUM sequencing AUs in Aum, iSem and Viking.
Crackling and Audio dropouts....Aum often crashes and doesn't seem to like being in the background when Modstep is running.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm hoping it's an issue which might be resolved by ios 9.3.
I can quite easily get audio crackles and drop outs when I get the processor to about 50% usage on my iPad Mini 2.
I can sequence more tracks if I just use ModStep, but ModStep + AUM combo means I cannot run as many together. I have recently added Viking and dubFX,
I am using buffer size of 256 with iSpark, Viking, iSem, Galileo, iMS-20 ModStep sampler. Converting to audio and using fileplayer gets rid of the crackle, but means I have to keep switching between file player and IAA/AU when I want to tweak the sequence, I am not sure what this will do to my AU presets once I have unloaded the AU to load a fileplayer instead, will it remeber what preset I was using ? I don't think it will, so I am using the notes function in AUM to write down which presets and IAA/AU's are on each track.
I have had similar experience of audio crackling when AUM is in the background. Things improve a lot when it's in the foreground.
On my Ipad mini2 9.2.1 I also have had crackle. Especially when using non Kymatica effects. But after a reset all crackling goes. Im investing in non IAA fxs to see if this helps. I think the problems are down to IAA
This could very well be the CPU frequency bug that Apple has fixed/improved in iOS 9.3. Basically, iOS would speed down the CPU because it thinks there's no work to do, even though there is audio work to do!
AUM certainly doesn't use less CPU when in foreground
Rather the other way around, it uses some CPU for the UI (level meters, etc) when in foreground, which might make iOS speed up the CPU frequency again.
I certainly don't want AUM to crash! Could you email me at info AT kymatica DOT com with details of how to reproduce the crash?
Question for anyone who knows, Do AU's use buffer setting from Host ? There are no settings for buffer in Viking, and it was after I started using this that I first got bad crackling, but at the same time I started pushing the number of tracks in AUM so not sure if it is Viking specifically or the number of tracks and IAA's/AU's.
Yes, the host is the one who is asking the AU to produce audio. If the host has a buffer size of 256 frames, it will ask the AUs to produce 256 frames for each buffer.
Theoretically, the host could divide this in smaller chunks, like asking the AUs for 2 x 128 frames instead, but I don't see why, and I don't know any host that does that. And in any case, the hardware buffer duration is the same for all apps currently running. It's decided by the first app you start (and that are still running) with recording permissions.
Thanks for the speedy reply
Bought AUM today. Very nice.
I have a plan to use a 2 iPad setup:
ModStep on my iPad Mini 2
AUM with AUs loaded on my iPad Air 2
That way I can manage patterns on one screen (mini) and change synth parameters and effects on another (air).
My question is on the best way to send midi from ModStep on the mini to AUM on the Air. Do either / both have 'midi over Bluetooth LE'? Otherwise I guess I need to use Appollo which would be another app on each device to manage.
Any help appreciated.
You could also use the Network midi session, I guess?
Thanks. But my understanding is that Bluetooth would have much less latency than over a wifi network. Are there any plans to add Bluetooth midi to AUM please?
So does Modstep support BT MIDI ?
Nanostudio has had a hack in place for this for ages under the guise of the "Maximize Audio CPU" settings option. It basically continually occupies the UI thread when it's not doing much so that the CPU doesn't throttle down. I also heard rumor that apple finally addressed this in 9.3 so I'm glad to hear confirmation. About time!
IIRC bt midi simply creates normal virtual endpoints, that can be used in any app? So if you enable bt midi somewhere else, it should show up in AUM as well. I'll investigate this more though, and add the bt midi configuration ui in AUM as well, for the 1.2 update.
Nice! I'm looking forward to 1.2 with all the MIDI improvements.
Thanks @j_liljedahl - that would be really useful. Just because the minimum number of apps to set up each time the better
.
My current plan:
Crazy?
Need some time to try it out.
Could you explain this in more detail? I have the new Korg nanoKontrol Studio which has BT midi, and I am planning on getting around to mapping the nano to AUM. It would be nice if I could leave the cable at home and just use it wirelessly.
Sounds like, prior to AUM 1.2, there is a way to have another app pick up the BT midi connection and let AUM use it? How to do this?...
Yep, just tried this here. Connect two devices via BT midi through any app the shows the standard bt midi screen, for example MidiFlow. Then each of the device turned up by itself in AUMs midi matrix: see screenshot. I could now play Viking running on my iphone by touching the AUM keyboard on my ipad. And you don't need MidiFlow running, ot was just used to initiate the bt-midi pairing between the devices.
Nice...
If I get time I might try my mega set up this evening.
Actually, @j_liljedahl or anyone else. I have another question.
It seems like iSem (as an AU)'s arp (when set to sync) doesn't respect the tempo of its host (AUM) - at least when link is enabled.
Anyone found it does work?
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 : I also found that it doesn´t work, no matter if Link is active or not. Looks like an issue of iSem to me.
Yeah, you'll need to adress the iSEM developer about that. Are you here, TempoRubato?
So far have managed to get ModStep sending Bluetooth midi to two AUM AUs.
If they are both iSem then it's all fine. However if one is Viking unfortunately I get lots of crackling and glitches in Vikings sound. Bit disappointed about that. Nothing else is running on the iPad Air so I'm a bit surprised it can't cope with 1 Viking AU being sequenced at the same time as an iSem AU.
Well - it kind of works. In fact it all works - but just not all that solidly.
I had:
Had a few audio glitches though. Plus it was a hassle to get Bluetooth to actually work. Viking initially had glitches but then later appeared to sound ok.
I'm probably pushing things too hard (although it was only 3 tracks) but I'm not sure I'd want to repeat the setup again for normal workflow. And for live use it certainly feels a bit glitchy.
But it is workable.
So how you do this? Use Midiflow?
