Memory/CPU efficient apps that still sound great

So with the advent of AUM, AU in general, ModStep etc I have detected that the most common question seems to be "how many of app X can I run at the same time?" etc. Now, the answer is invariably "it depends", and it obviously depends on lots of factors, and "sound great" is also subjective.

However, is there a list of apps (instruments/effects) that are "famous" for being low on resources, without skimping on functionality and still sound great? I'm talking about when they are running as intended. A 3mb download app can still go bonkers in CPU usage depending on what you will have it do etc.

What apps would you suggest play nicely in multiples and/or together with lots of other apps, without hitting the limits of your device?
